- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5idiots. You have to understand that Yahoo isn't stupid. When you have Microsoft and Google fighting it out, you are attacked on both ends. It's better to lie low and not be aggressive. After both sides are injured, pounce. Standard SOP.
Yahoo has all the stuff Google has. It's just waiting for Google to fall. Not only that, it has a whole host of stuff Google does not have. A working relationship with governments. It has SBC in it's pocket along with Dialpad(a Voip service)--> cha ching. Webjay and Yahoo Music engine. Alibaba.com (ebay alternative), whereonearth (mapquest 2.0, really), Verizon deal for mobile phone segment, Konfabulator, Upcoming.org(online calendar service)...
See, all these companies are waiting for is WIFI. When the whole world is EVDOed and every single computer is linked to the cellphone is linked to the ISP. And then, your whole world is online. And the one with the most integrated and most far reaching service will be google. It's got a fast product launch rate too.
And yahoo isn't afraid to be evil and snuggle with governments. Which is why everyone should be aware that using yahoo, even something as benign as yahoo games comes with a price. I will never use a yahoo product ever again. I could overlook the fact that they turned over information to the Chinese government that incarcerated a journalist. But to sit idly by while US sues Google and then have the gaul to defend their decision to give their user's search histories over to a 3rd party( US)...
That's *****. Goodbye yahoo mail. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When someone is entrenched in the front, its better to attack from the rear.
Yahoo is swarming twoards a very different kind of search... the "web 2.0", social web kind of search, and its a good strategy.
Let google think they've won the goal, then change what the goal was in the first place. - lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I don't care what happens - just don't bring Flickr down."
Hey! Just don't take Free Fantasy Sports down. - xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Shares of Yahoo! fell as much as 13 percent Wednesday,
The stock rose 43 cents to $34.17 Monday
ummm...so 30% increase for quiting!
Sounds like a winning move!"
$.01 != 1%
Sounds like a guy that has difficulty with arithmetic! - dianesummers, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Internet Marketing Uncut bonus review http://internetmarketinguncut-bonus.blogspot.com/ great online marketing strategy.
- Maverick340, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1I like the part about making thier IMs interoperable
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's lame. I thought they were #2 in search, and they gave up just like that? I guess Google doesn't need to do anything now, except enjoy their monopoly and goof off.
- Maverick340, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1lol
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Because this isn't slashdot"
What's slashdot? - Baddox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't say this is "throwing in the towel". It's more just admitting that Google has the corner on internet searching. I'm sure Yahoo will still update their search technology, and positive they'll spend more resources making sure they remain the number one internet portal.
- dgrinb01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yahoo just want to look like an under-dog ("Look, poor little Yahoo"). Worked for Google, now they can even read your mail and put ads ("Let them, they are poor little Google").
- jodamiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Being the biggest in your market is not the end-all be-all of being the best company.
- Teazo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are google fanboys the same folks as the Apple fanboys? They seem to utter the same blind faith enthusiasm. Anyway, at least Yahoo is diversified, Google pretty much relies upon their crooked adwords system for profit.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is just a chess piece move in a game. Of COURSE Yahoo wants to kill Googles market share, in anyway it can. If you think this is Yahoo "giving up" in the face of Google, you understand about as much of business as a fish understands about bicycle riding.
- jlpaluch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What bothers me more is the fact that Google keeps gaining search share %.... a monopoly in Internet searching can't be a good thing. However, as someone else pointed out, these technologies are usurped quite quickly.
- gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://mindset.research.yahoo.com/
works well, why not use it yahooians - Archimboldo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mtgarden: "When you give up trying to excel, you end up with a second rate performance."
But what do you try to excel at? Obviously some things would be a wasted effort. Yahoo, for example, would never try to excel at making cars.
Now how close is the search biz to Yahoo's expertise? Well, I don't think the search biz is all THAT far from their core business. They are in the biz of providing specialized information (i.e., portals to specialized services), but if you ask me, they could be a nice thorn in Google's side by improving specialized searches.
And I don't know, but Google already seems to be moving towards some specialized searches (define: ... etc.). Yahoo should try to kick their butt there. A little competition would keep Google on their toes instead of getting fat and lazy over time. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FTA: "Yahoo! founded in 1994 as one of the first online directories of Web sites, switched from Google's search engine to its own technology two years ago."
Actually, Yahoo! started with its own search engine. Then it used Google for a while. Now it uses Inktomi, which it purchased just before they stopped using Google. They haven't used their *own* search engine since before Google powered Yahoo!. - topper24hours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"another Google myth. Look at the stock market and everything will be clear soon."
OK - I call your bluff!
YHOO - @ $34 w/ a 52 week range $30-$43
GOOG- @$441 w/ a 52 week range $172-475
What am I supposed to gather by this? - chadell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Extreme competition, http://mpelembe.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2006/1/24/1720710.html
- topper24hours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yahoo! Inc.(NASDAQ NM:YHOO)
34.88 +0.71 / +2.07%
looks like wall street isn't as upset as digg users."
Yeah and Goog is up 3.3% today! BTW, w/ how LOW Yhoo stock is it only took their stock going up 68 pennies today to show that figure, Goog's went up over $13 to show their increase! So stfu when your point is pointless! - orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who cares, it's a search engine people. I don't use google, or yahoo. and I dont care. i find what i want, and move on. I am truly shocked that a company can put out practically nothing, and be the word out of everyone's lips. Yeah Gmail, google earth, etc. but still. There gadgets. glorified widgets.
- gator99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL, no company puts $ second. Over the past couple years google searches have been becoming less relevant. All it would take for them to lose market share is for another company to offer better relevance for the same volume of search, but this would take a lot of $.
- neubs007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was loyal to Yahoo until I started to code in C#. You have to put the C# in quotes in order for it to find matches in Yahoo. I still use Yahoo as a portal, but do my searches in google.
- L0t3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"lay low" and "be aggressive"? Or worse, it's "Standard SOP"?
That must be a joke? - LUPLEO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OLD NEWS
LOOK GRAPHICALLY
http://digg.com/technology/Google_defeats_YAhoo_in_market_share._Watch_out_MS - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PS- If yahoo would just clean up its interface and speed, they would be exponentially better. I have noticed that the search results are actually very good, many times picking things up that are missed by google.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, it's nice to see someone admitting the horrible truth: Yahoo and MS suck at searches.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yahoo put $hit first, search second. Google did the opposite with their site and kicked everyone's asses. Yahoo's main page hurts the eyes, period.
- i2ealphaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if i only knew these things last friday. :sob: could've had a 10+% gain over a 4 day period.
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heh..heh.. I am feeling googlicious
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well excuse me for mis-typing. SOP then. Jesus. YOu make one...well two mistakes. I cant very well preview my comments now can i? You hear that Krose? a Preview would be nice.
- b7j0c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0serious question - how often do you use internet search? i need to search for something maybe once or twice a week at most. i'm not sure why people trump up this feature.
- demosthenes247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ b7j0c
multiple times per day - dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yahoo is more of a portal than anything else. Why fight a losing battle when they can add onto and improve their large list of services.
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are we even sure this is legit? I see no reference of it (yet) on NASDAQ and I'd think this would be pretty big news for investors.
http://quotes.nasdaq.com/asp/summaryquote.asp?symbol=YHOO%60&selected=YHOO%60 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How the ***** do you think Yahoo or Microsoft is going to compete with the rocket scientists in google?
- themachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@muikano et al:
Stop complaining about Yahoo or Google turning over users to the Chinese government. They're doing business in China, they have to abide by Chinese law. You have a problem with that, blame China, not the companies who do business there. - christopherhib, on 02/26/2009, -0/+0This was bound to of happened at some point, google has diversified so much so quickly, to the extent where they even have there own OS now, I think in the not to distant future we could be looking at a google O/S over a windows or MAC....Now thats some food for thought
- dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another thing to note is that Google's major source of income (almost all) is from ads. So if the ad market were to crash Google would be belly up. Where as Yahoo, which would still take a huge hit, could potentially survive a crash in online advertisement in which they could once again possibly take back the search market..
Google may be strong now, but they are not diverse enough to withstand a blow to the online advertising industry. - settsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure who this announcement was meant for??
The tech investor underworld?
I for one, never considered Yahoo a "competitor" to Google.
Those in the know use both, since neither is truly "superior", while the rest could care less.
In fact, I specifically don't send less savvy people to Google.
It's like choosing between a Honda or Toyota... - jpfinch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yahoo is more frequently visited than google. you're damn right they would be happy to "maintain our market share"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"@ b7j0c
multiple times per day"
same here. i use it every day. google has TONS and TONS of uses other than "simple internet search". whatever that means... but we're not going to spell them out for you; look on google for more info ;p - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure why anyone even gripes about yahoo ads... either complain about 'em, or just block 'em. kinda like someone I knew who complains about taxes, then brags about how little he pays. c'mon, pick one, and shattayup! lol.
That said, Yahoo isn't nearly as bad as many folks hype it up to be, and they at least know a good thing when they see it (flickr, del.icio.us). When is google going to "innovate" regular expressions into their search, that's always been my prerequisite for a "great search engine," otherwise they are all lame, every freaking one of them, including google. Turning off pagerank might be another nice feature google can "innovate", haven't seen that yet either. - topper24hours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Those in the know use both, since neither is truly "superior""
Those in the know boycott Yahoo for WILLINGLY giving user data to the feds! - therockstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reaction from Jeremy Zawodny: http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/006179.html
- themachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is a non-event; "It's not our goal to be No. 1 in Internet search." That's not news, that's the same thing Yahoo's been saying for years.
The whole Y vs. G "war" is dumb anyway, since the two sites have different purposes: Yahoo is a portal, Google is a search engine. It'd be very hard for Google to take a big piece of Yahoo's turf without drastically changing its identity, and vice versa. - thal3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Danny Sullivan, editor of London-based SearchEngineWatch.com, which tracks the search industry. "It really ought to be their goal" to be No. 1, he said. "Whether it's realistic or not."
Stephen Colbert: "Pussy. As in, 'Don't be a'"
How are they just gonna throw in the towel?! Aim high you woosies! You're never going to be #1 if you stop trying.
Eh, i guess i'm just channeling my old football coach. - multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Yahoo when I don't want 25,000 results. There image search brings up a smaller amount of pictures but as more of the pictures I was looking for and not false positives.
