- joshzam, on 05/20/2009, -1/+29I can think of nothing that would kill my ability to think more than by spoon feeding me information. Especially when the Internet is so full of opinion and misinformation to begin with. I would much prefer to have those ten blue links, read all sides of the issue, and formulate an informed opinion on the matter - and maybe learn more than I bargained for in the process.
- Vedlen, on 05/20/2009, -1/+18If I'm not mistaken Firefox just queries Google in background... And if I'm not mistaken Google is a search engine..
- sickthoughts, on 05/20/2009, -3/+16As simple as my argument may be, it's true -
Google Search > Yahoo Search - ixicoolaixi, on 05/20/2009, -2/+13If this gets me to alien (or tentacle) hentai faster I'm all for it.
- nickycakes, on 05/20/2009, -1/+10Can't remember the last time yahoo knew/did what people wanted.
- bonuscalc, on 05/20/2009, -0/+8Doesn't Wikipedia already do what Yahoo wants to do in a way. I'll also be willing to bet the quality of information from Wikipedia will be far superior than what Yahoo can do given what it did with yahoo answers.
Also, Wikipedia isn't edited by a for profit corporation... - AndrewDB, on 05/20/2009, -1/+9Yahoo Answers is hilarious.
When your bored one night, head to it, you'll find some interesting *****.
Example: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200810 ...
Just found that one randomly.. - Cambo, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7I want the options so I can make up my own mind as to what is correct. not to be told that this is the one answer when in most cases there can be several.
- staticfire, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6LMAO
i think people who use yahoo answers are unaware the answers to 99% of their questions could be found using a simple google search. - bonuscalc, on 05/20/2009, -1/+7So yahoo's idea is to take away multiple sources of information so that one can form an opinion based on multiple view points and just give us one answer.
It'll be fun to see when you get the same answer for conflicting points of view. Who decides the right answer yahoo? If you take the best answer approach voted by the users, people searching for one answer will vote for the answer they want but people searching for the opposite will also vote for the answer they want to find (in general, it always happens, even in university research, people find what they expect to find)
i.e. - Does public health care cost less than private health care: Yes, according to ____ public health care is costs more and is less efficient
- Does private heath care cost more than public: Yes, according to _____ private health care costs more and is less efficient
This will be far worse for subjective point of views.
Anyway, yahoo search has been junk from the beginning, Altavista was my oldschool one (before that Infoseek) and for almost the past decade Google has the helm. Yahoo has many great things however search is not a strong point for them. - MistrBrownstone, on 05/20/2009, -1/+6"Yes, I realised that after I wrote the first bit of my comment. See the last sentence"
Just because you started typing a comment doesn't mean you are required to submit it. - induren, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5People doing research don't want answers. They want options.
People doing searches like, "What is 50-Cent's real name," want answers.
Yahoo would be wise to differentiate between the two. - MonkeyNews, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5Not only that, but it's open to massive abuse.
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5FTA: 'The company thinks its customers don’t care how many pages a search engine indexes — nor do they want to search. They want answers.'
Oh, I get it. They want to do something that's similar to Wolfram|Alpha. How original. - laguano, on 05/20/2009, -1/+5Is your sarcasm meter broken?
- jammyfred, on 05/20/2009, -3/+7Yes, I realised that after I wrote the first bit of my comment. See the last sentence.
- toxicityj, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4"The company thinks its users don’t care about how many pages a search engine indexes"
well that probably explains why search engines stopped advertising that. Unless you're Cuil. But then you're the biggest sack of fail on the planet earth. - agbullet, on 05/20/2009, -1/+5Sometimes you're not searching for "Is this new tax policy harmful or beneficial to society in the post-Bush era?"
Sometimes you just want to know "is that pizza place down the street going to be open for the next hour?". I'd rather have a definite answer than 10 links, thank you. - Fr0stbyte124, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4What good is an informed opinion on the internet?
- Plonkely, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3You've shot yourself in the foot a bit there. I'm betting that you're not an expert in the field of search engines, yet you clearly have an opinion. Shouldn't that render your opinion not valid?
I see your point; but found this amusing! - MistrBrownstone, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Ha, yeah. Answer to 99% of the questions at Yahoo answers: http://lmgtfy.com/
- digitalArtform, on 05/20/2009, -2/+5Actually I take it back. I just have one question maybe Yahoo can answer:
How is babby formed? - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Yahoo is for sheep.
- s0nicfreak, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Didn't altavista have that YEARS ago?
- beck5, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2ha ha fair point, but this is digg remember where the experts of the world come to gether and solve the worlds problems! ;)
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2your wrong what?
- mrmudgeon, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Yahoo is desperate, and probably doomed. WolframAlpha does a much better job at analytic queries and wikipedia is the best place to go for already organized expert information. This feels like nothing new here.
- punkcat, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2i want my answers in context.
and often times i don't want a hard answer, i'd like to see the what other issues are around what i searched, like a site. - opiniastrous, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I reckon Yahoo is misjudging opinion here. I'm a big fan of the 'ten blue links,' if that's what they call it. I like to have several pages open at once and just move from link to link, discovering new stuff as I go.
That said, every now and then I just want an answer right. now. If Yahoo made it easy to choose between the two: multiple links and direct answers, then I'd be pretty impressed. As a start, I reckon any search typed with just keywords (number ducks species) should bring up links, and any search phrased as a question (e.g. "How many species of duck exist?") should bring up an answer. - sickthoughts, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Very fair point
- miaow, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1all search engines should concede they are a pile of junk. maybe they are worried about wolfram
- miaow, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1it should be Yahoo Dumb Answers
- MyNameIsJoe, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1The new music search results are great. They include links to play music from the artists that plays right on the search page. Didn't work for some of the older artists I typed in like Louis Armstong, but it worked for almost every other artist I could think of.
- digitalArtform, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2Yes, and the answer I want is how many and which documents talk about my chosen search terms.
I'll take it from there. - eavesdrop, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1Well, Yahoo's interface has certainly improved. I still dont' like that Yahoo! is plastered all of the ***** place, uhh yeah I know I'm using Yahoo Search. The search ain't half bad, it's just slow to index things.
They would get more success if they renamed their search technology and gave it, it's own name and website. But still have it on the Yahoo.com portal, just powered by "*****".
Typing search.yahoo.com is retarded and I dont want to load an entire portal, no matter if it loaded as fast as a 56k friendly webpage. I just want to find information.
Their biggest hurdle is getting a browser to have yahoo search by default, you can change this easily in firefox, but it's not default. - beck5, on 05/20/2009, -4/+2it depends if the information is used to fuel the mind or replace the mind. I don't know the answer, but i would lean to saying it fuels the mind.
Spending 2 hours Comparing 10 google results on a topic isn't going to give you a fair and true opinion, if I could use yahoo and it gives me a brief summary from some peer reviewed academic research then surely that would be better?
Im not saying your wrong, just not entirely right :) - beck5, on 05/20/2009, -3/+1the main point must be what information is being given to you, as we all know there are lots of 'home made' essays/articles/blogs which argue some point very well, and without having some decent background knowledge on the topic people are often missled. If yahoo could give a brief synopsis of some peer reviewed academic work then maybe the web could become a lot more useful!
imo: if your not an expert in the field, most the time you don't really have a valid opinion, - jorks, on 05/20/2009, -2/+0I just happened to create a site using the yahoo boss api which eliminates the 10 blue links paging with a simple scrolling interface. It's online now and still being worked on. http://charcle.com
I created the site because I always hate seeing the same results when doing multiple searches. It will remember what results you have already seen and automatically hide them and continue searching for more. I'd appreciate any suggestions or feedback. - staticfire, on 05/20/2009, -7/+2seriously? so your the guy that watches that stuff? whats wrong with regular porn? that ***** is just creepy imho
- jammyfred, on 05/20/2009, -20/+9I rarely ever use search engines any more. I just type in a couple words into the Firefox 3 address bar and it takes me to the exact page I want 95% of the time. Although to be fair it is probably just doing a google 'I'm feeling lucky' search.

What is Digg?
