- spinchange, on 10/31/2007, -0/+44Considering Google is all over SMS & Mobile like white on rice, it puzzles me that this kind of functionality hasn't been built into Gmail. Score one for Yahoo.
- dcharti, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29This allows you to do that from within the Yahoo! Mail UI and without needing to know any kind of @ text for anyone. You know Verizon's, but how about T-Mobile's? AT&T's? Nextel's?
The point is not having to know any of that crap; it's clicking on a name, typing a message and hitting enter no matter who you need to talk to or what device they're using.
That's incredibly useful. - totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Very slick-wish Google would support this inside of Gmail.
- hassanchop13, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16you could do this inside of AIM forever now? just +then the number as the person to send the message too

Recently, I have been debating the switch. I mean, Yahoo offers IMAP (gmail is really missing the ball on this one, as POP is only useful if you have only one client), unlimited space, gmail spam filtering has (for me at least) been really lacking lately, and I personally like folders. Now this...
I will give gmail the props it deserves for it's interface, but that's really all personal taste.
Anyone else feeling this? - daveisfera, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7For me it's the opposite with the spam filter. Yahoo's lets a lot through and GMail catches almost all of it, but who knows.
- fabio1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6While I agree with you regarding IMAP support, I'm happy that gmail does not attach "signature spam" on the mails I send. For me, this is the number one feature that gmail has and not a lot of people seem to appreciate enough...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's not working for me! I typed in my mobile number, and all I get is this error message: "There was a problem: Either there is a syntax error in one of your address fields, or you have used a nickname which is not in your Address Book. Please enter a valid e-mail address (e.g., in the format person@yahoo.com) or use a nickname from your Yahoo! Address Book. Your message has not been sent." HELP!
- mannyotr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wasn't working for me either. Then I came across this....
"The enhancements make it easier to send e-mail, instant messages or text messages from a single Web site - no need to launch or toggle between separate applications or devices. It will take up to six weeks for all the new features to become available to all 254 million Yahoo Mail subscribers in 21 languages worldwide." - robotsongs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Have you even tried that link?
- c2mfj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4irrelevant now but here it is http://toolbar.google.com/send/sms/index.php
- fthead9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Nice to see Yahoo pushing the envelope for once instead of buying a service or creating a me too version of someone else's innovation. Maybe there is still some life at the big Y.
- djspike, on 10/10/2007, -14/+17Um... how is this new? You've been able do this for some time... like with verizon... just send the email to (10 digit #)@vtext.com i forgot what the ones for sprint/t-mobile/att are.. but this is nothing new...
- bigapple666, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And your point is? There are a million other places you could do this too. The fact is that now it's plain and simple for existing Yahoo users to do it without knowing anything more than a phone number. This is for users who don't go out searching for the other ways to do everything under the sun.
- scarper86, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3.
- Koopaloop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nice, finally I can justify having a yahoo mail account
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The 6 month old comment system allows us to reply to people! How amazing is that?
Seriously, though; as messed up as the new comment system is, you have to be plain dumb to not know how to use it at this point. - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I too have been contemplating the switch. IMAP is a huge deal, and why this isn't a GMail feature yet is beyond me. I also would like to see Gmail get on the iPhone Push Email bandwagon that Yahoo is on.
I'd glady pay $20 a year to Gmail if it meant I could have IMAP support and a bigger mailbox. I'm sure I'm not the only user that feels this way too. - Abestar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Beat me to the punch. Why would anyone email texts if they can IM them? I use AIM all the time for this.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Gmail has been stagnant for some time now. I'm still waiting for IMAP, skins, and push-to-iPhone email. And for the record, I know you can skin Gmail with scripts and add-ons, but I want something official.
- andy17null, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3So use an AIM client and send an IM to +15558829442. It'll be sent as a text, not an "IM to mobile" message.
- doggybum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2they are in the midst of rolling this feature out. i wonder when gmail will get it?....that and IMAP! How hard is it to integrate that?
- jduley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You have all your contact's emails memorized? You should really try using your address book, then you don't have to "know any of that crap".
- ubuwalker31, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Because your tone is obnoxious.
- c2mfj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well it worked the last time i used it :( Bury away!
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Agree about the "sig spam". It's the main reason I stick with gmail vs yahoo at this point.
I really wish google would get on the ball regarding IMAP support. It drives me ***** nuts when I delete a msg from my phone and still have to go back and delete it again later through the gmail interface. (unlike my work email where I can delete something from my phone and it's gone from my desktop when I get to work in the morning.) I realize google wants us to keep everything forever, but a useless message is still a useless ***** message and I don't want it clogging up my inbox. - OdinEye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I suppose Yahoo has to come up with some reason why you should want to look at their new e-mail page with the ads taking up probably about a quarter of the visible space.
I seriously looked at dropping Yahoo when they came out with the new ads on the e-mail Beta. Those ads - especially the right side ad - that you can "close" until you open the next e-mail and then have to close again - are ridiculously intrusive.
Text messaging might be a reasonable tradeoff for some, but I can tell you it's not enough to get my vote. - anthonylitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The blog link above actually shows a picture of it working, but like you said, not working here ether. Too bad, I hope I am not at the end of the six weeks, this is something I would actually use!
- theholycow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How about any of a ***** of these:
http://www.smseverywhere.com/send.htm
Actually, I think there's an email-SMS gateway that's not carrier-specific. Too bad I don't remember what it is... - OdinEye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow - I sure hope that background music is available through Creative Commons!
- justelite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1here it is the video with Yahoo feature:
http://pcnews.tv/598/yahoo-unveils-new-mail-with-text-messaging/ - Gryffydd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Whoa...those still exist?
- Rtsight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Google has this service years ago already (just not on gtalk/gmail yet)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Amazingthat I am getting buried for pointing out the FACTS, this this comment is wrong. The beauty of what Yahoo is doing is that it allows you to carry on a conversation with a cell phone user with your e-mail account. Something you are familair with using every day. It also allows you to do it without knowing ANYTHING about the cell phone user other than his phone number. Doesn't matter if you know his/her cell provider or not. That makes it different than sendtophone.
c2mfj has this sad need to defend Google, and overlook that fact that in this case, Yahoo beat them to the punch. Period. Accept it. It is NOT the first time it has happened and won't be the last. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1And by the way...to point out ANOTHER way that Yahoo's offering is different (and much better)...you ever think that maybe the person might want to be able to RECEIVE a message back from the cell phone user? sendtophone does not have that.
- madk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2http://www.google.com/sendtophone
- pandasonic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I always wondered about that. There is a Firefox extension that allows you to use Google to send a SMS from Firefox. I also recall Google having a page that allowed you to send a SMS.
- jenp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0All these other self proclaimed text messaging sites charge you. the only free and safe site to send free text messages is http://peekamo.com/ just like what mason said.
- shannon30338, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It is important because using your method you would have to know the mobile carrier for each person that you want to SMS. Yahoo is making it so you don't need to know the mobile carrier each time you want to SMS from email.
- Carlitto, on 10/16/2007, -0/+0http://www.send-sms-now.com offers same sevice for a while - it covers not so many countries like Yahoo Mail but it is just fine
- sowlerrmgh, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3i hope gmail will follow suit
- UtahApocalyse, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2still wont text message my cheap ass cricket phone
- masonbp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0http://www.undertheradarblog.com/wp_blog.html?fb_2042860_anch=2905755. nothing new that peekamo hasnt put out. its is cool that yahoo joined the texting phenomenon.
- bigapple666, on 10/31/2007, -2/+1Score more than one for Yahoo. Gmail is relatively useless beyond being a big inbox. Why they had to do things differently, I'll never know.
- Wilson, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Gizmo has been doing this for a while: I use it when I'm running low on bundled texts.
