- JasonCox, on 01/17/2008, -12/+97Ok, lets put it this way:
Xbox 360: Plays games, movies, TV shows, whatever you download off BitTorrent, music and alot more
AppleTV: Plays DRM'd content from the iTunes store - yivkX360, on 01/17/2008, -10/+65I don't think anybody purchased a 360 for the sole purpose of watching movies through marketplace. Still, apple has a very nice new product.
- cveltma, on 01/17/2008, -5/+59So when an Apple product fails its classified as "hobby"?
- TehSwat, on 01/17/2008, -9/+52What would you expect? A gaming console versus something with the purpose of Movies and Videos as a main target?
- suprememilo, on 01/17/2008, -0/+43I like the idea of compition here, unlike for HD-DVD vs BluRay, especially because this also puts pressure on cable companies with OnDemand, hopefully this will help get prices down.
- havokzero, on 01/17/2008, -6/+35The prices for both service are ridiculous, if you ask me.
- Vital8, on 01/17/2008, -2/+31stop comparing apples to oranges
- mrblaack, on 01/17/2008, -3/+30It's a pretty equal comparison until you get to the Divx support. I'm not interested in buying an AppleTV until I can play my torrents.
- angers, on 01/17/2008, -4/+30DiVX / Xvid Streaming really makes the Xbox practical... i often stream movies/music from the computer.
- areohbe, on 01/17/2008, -4/+24bit torrent + xbox 360 FTW
- edicius, on 01/17/2008, -6/+24Maybe you need a faster connection. I can watch movies very quickly after renting.
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/17/2008, -9/+26why make such pointless comparisons? each hardware has different focus. people are so bored these days. XboX live has its strengths, this isn't one.
- ferrariman60, on 01/17/2008, -4/+20This isn't a valid comparison. No one would ever dream of cross shopping an Xbox 360 and an Apple TV. They're built for totally different things. I know they are just comparing the video rental service, but that's the sole purpose of the Apple TV. It'd be like comparing Apple TV and Xbox 360 as gaming platforms- it'd be a joke. And I'd certainly hope the Apple TV has better rental services than the 360, as that is the sole purpose of forking over $230 for the Apple. For $350, you get an Xbox, a totally different product, with movie rentals on the side as a bonus. Oh, or you could actually watch a physical DVD on the 360. That's a plus.
- Ender008, on 01/17/2008, -1/+16Slight bonus of some video games...?
It's not like that's the point of the 360 or anything... - wolphcry, on 01/17/2008, -2/+12I have used both... I was going to get a Apple TV tell I found Connect360. The ATV has a better interface, but it's nice being able to play a lot more formats on the xbox.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -3/+13How exactly is movie/tv show downloads not a strength? It is competing vs 2 other consoles. I'm not sure about the ps3 but I know for sure the wii doesn't offer that service, therefore it is a strength.
- Sairgem, on 01/17/2008, -3/+13No reason why you would store more than one movie at a time, considering they're rentals.
- Frogee, on 01/17/2008, -2/+11Only difference is, the Zune caught back up. The new Zunes pwn!
- honkimon, on 01/17/2008, -2/+10This is horse *****. Aside from the HD Content. The 360 as an extender + Vista supports Vongo, Movielink, & Marketplace. All together, that is far over 1k movies available. So I say the 360 FTW.
- philipz78, on 01/17/2008, -4/+12If the Apple TV could record, maybe it wouldn't have flopped so bad
- dotnetnoob, on 01/17/2008, -5/+13xbox360 elite cost $449 (120gb) apple tv $329 (160gb) for only $120 more. xbox360 give you way more than apple tv. why do people waste their money on apple tv the biggest flop from apple EVER.
- radink360, on 01/17/2008, -7/+15AppleTV blows. All it gives you is itunes on your tv. nothing more. The 360 gives you everyhing apple tv has, plus games, divx/xvid playback and DVR capabilities with a media center pc. Sorry, but apple's products are all over hyped, over priced crap. All of you touting that the market place sucks are just a bunch of apple fanboys who can't open your eyes to any other products. God forbid something might be better than an apple product.
- dotnetnoob, on 01/17/2008, -16/+23Apple TV is a flop. While Xbox360 is not.
i know it's hard to believe but that's the FACT. - crazysamz, on 01/17/2008, -1/+8The 360's rental service seems more practical to most people... It's already in many homes (much more than the Apple TV), Is the best available gaming console, has a great online community, is already supported by many formats/studios and has some experience in this business, which Apple TV does not. 360 is a little bit more expensive, but it definitely outweighs the Apple TV in value. It's the best all-you-can-do in one box device out there right now. The Apple TV isn't even a DVR, while the 360 streams media center and is now going to be getting IPTV. If all you want is movie rentals though, then you may want to go with the Apple TV. But if you like to have some real entertainment and play some awesome games along with get even more content (including awesome movie rentals) in one box, then get the 360.
- graemee, on 01/17/2008, -6/+13Transcoding sucks. Xvid is the right format
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -4/+11Bah, he doesn't know what he is talking about. If you rent a movie... Generally you are gonna delete it after the rental is over right? So really, the guy is cookie cutter microsoft hater, grasping at straws to hate on Microsoft, and little else.
- sixdust, on 01/17/2008, -1/+8Comcast=Lose
- davidrools, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6Or maybe they took a hint from the cell phone industry. People are buying ringtones and wallpapers like crazy even though any digg user could easily convert any mp3 into a phone compatible format and sent it over their bluetooth connection in a few seconds.
- radink360, on 01/17/2008, -6/+12360 has it. you'll be dug down because digg is 90% mac fanboys.
- virtualball, on 01/17/2008, -7/+13Um, Ok.... The AppleTV got an update that allows you to do much more with it, including rent HD movies without using a computer. That, in itself, should allow one to have another look at it. It's an entirely new product, so you can't really call it a flop.
(though, v. 1 was :) ) - dotnetnoob, on 01/17/2008, -16/+22uh NO Apple TV is a big flop. Not everything ***** out by Apple is gold and thats the cold hard FACT.
- dotnetnoob, on 01/17/2008, -1/+6wow. you are one bad lier. i own a xbox360 halo edition no such noise when i play game or watch movie. is this what fanboy is doing to help the biggest flop from apple
- MWeather, on 01/17/2008, -1/+6They don't hold an overhyped press conference for their spring update?
- DavidGX, on 01/17/2008, -4/+9Xbox 360 + External HDD + Broadband = unlimited streaming content.
- dotnetnoob, on 01/17/2008, -4/+9no *****! look at all the apple fan boy out in full force. apple tv is the biggest flop EVER. hell zune even look better compare to apple tv.
- suprememilo, on 01/17/2008, -2/+7Does your Comcast go out, and flicker as much as mine does?
- Stopher, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5Seriously, it doesn't seem fair to compare price when you get a whole next-gen video game system and an upscaling DVD player with the 360.
- dpowre, on 01/17/2008, -6/+10did you read the article? or is your comment about the company itself with no relavance to this story?
- suprememilo, on 01/17/2008, -11/+15Pretty sure you can still stream your music library with Apple Tv, proabbly other movies too as long as they are in the right format.
- virtualball, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4Seriously? What am I supposed to do? If I like a product, should I expect Apple to ship it to me for free? It's like the people waiting for the 2nd Gen. iPhone. Plus, for $179 (refurb) you can't really go wrong! Though, I'd wait for a review first :)
- davidrools, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5the xbox has a dvd player and upscales to 1080p very well, and may have a very affordable bluray addon drive in the future...what advantage does apple have with optical media? That and MS won't be sitting around while apple "ups its game" so it'll be an interesting "battle" regardless, and will only help consumers on both sides.
- areohbe, on 01/17/2008, -2/+6I agree with dotnet, the 360's dvd playback is not loud. If it's truly interrupting your movie watching experience you need to sit more than 7 inches away from your 360 or turn your volume up past 4.
- zdiggler, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5Here is what I do. Have collection of DVD I paid for.
Rip and store them on my Media Server, Watch them on xbox. I don't care about menus etc. my kids can also stream them from their room. I don't have to look for missing dvd anymore, or get them back with some candy stuck on them. - TheWorkz, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5Umm.. not necessarily.. My Xbox 360 plays 1080p WMV files with WMPro audio just fine over Ethernet on my PC share. So their comparison about Xbox 360 playing 720p only is incorrect. What they should say is that 720p movies are the only thing available currently. I would not be surprised if Microsoft eventually provided 1080p downloads. I also disagree with their comparison about their platform support.. Technically Xbox 360 supports accessing files form Vista and XP media centers, zune software, and Windows Media player 11.
Just my thoughts tho. - digjam, on 01/17/2008, -2/+5oh cmon! Other than the number of studios... theres hardly ANY difference in the prices....its $0.50-$1 difference which I m sure MS will drop the price.. But take this into consideration..how many ppl actualy download HD movies..be realistic..downloading 4GB data in DSL or cable will take almost half a day atleast unless u are on T1....Many have standard 3Mbps DSL...so thats out of the pic...other than that... you can stream vids,music,pics,divx,xvid,mp3,drmfree content to hdtv...as well as PLAY ***** GAMES!...No way apple tv can be compared to Xbox 360....or PS3 for that matter... they are 2 different categories...
NOW LOOK FOR A CORNER AND CRY APPLE FANBOYS! - PanicAK, on 01/17/2008, -2/+5IMO I would rather see a single monthly charge for these type of services, instead of paying per download. Until then, I really have no interest.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3new product?
- rtgordon, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3What's wrong with comparing the prices of two competing services? They aren't comparing processing power or GPU stats. They are comparing features relevant to movie watching experience with both services. Apple has been hard at work to compete with MS. Don't think for a moment apple enjoyed it every time someone brought up that MS had HD downloads and they didn't. Maybe it will encourage MS to be a little more competitive and get some more/better TV content.
- digudown, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4compared to no DVD playback?
- northerngeek, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3I am normally not a fan of Apple products but I believe this to be a step in the right direction for Apple TV so good for them and their fans, if I were rating the old and new Apple TV scores would be 5 and 8 /10 respectively so this is definitely good for some people.
I don't agree with the article's summary particuarly though:
1. No mention of Media Center- this too brings compatability with the Zune (I am a big fan of both products and Microsoft's vision ties together really well here)
2. No mention of being able to use High Definition physical media (I know this affects price comparison but it should be included)
But like many have said Microsoft and Apple are making different products targetted at different people- I think the major change for MS will come in the next generation of Xbox, J Allard already spoke of how the packages would evolve into something like what they're doing with Music on the Zune for movies and the two products deliberately being made with the same back-end in mind.... shame really they have this MSP system.
Both are excellent but one is a new product the other is quite a bit older, I would expect a newer product to have better options. -
