- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65Hello Mr. Smith,
We have noticed pictures in your XDrive account which seem to indicate an association with a female companion whom is not your wife.
Please take a moment to consider our new Premium plan for only 19.95 a month which contains extra privacy features which will ensure this information remains secure.
Sincerely,
Your friends at AOL. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+47
- mezoko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Who knows what AOL might do with your Data you upload to it!
Hell they might give it to anyone! - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"why does the comment of nothing have +4 diggs?"
Because its sometimes better to say nothing than to say something retarded. - titaniumdecoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I pity the fool who uses AOL.
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14why does the comment of nothing have +4 diggs?
- Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@ Mugsy:
Sure, but AOL more-so.
http://xkcd.com/comics/search_history.png - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I am hoping that AOL dies.
- Sweetdelight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I trust them... I trust them enough, that I will be using TrueCrypt On everything I will be uploading..
www.truecrypt.org/
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrueCrypt
It's 1. Open source, 2. It's pretty much impossible to read the information unless you get the master password which is easily prevented by having a "good" password.
good luck AOL trying to see whats inside the files.
Oh and there's a Linux client version of it ( mac coming soon). - Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Statements mean little. Actions mean a lot. AOL's actions have instilled a lot of distrust, be it buying off Digg users, or the search history FUBAR.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9For 300 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111
- weezer1024, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Finally a location for my porn where my wife won't find it!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5At least it's not funded with vaporcash like the rest of "web 2.0" and likely to go vaporbust and disappear with your data.
- JoeShmoew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think this is a pretty good move by AOL, but I wouldn't trust them with my data, especially because of what happened with their searches of 500,000 users released no too long ago. I also made an account, and it upgrade me to 50 GB free!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've used SmartDrive for years. It was the product before AOL bought it. We offered it to business customers when I worked for Time Warner Business Services. It's a great product. Upload a file and it is encrypted and copied to 2 data centers on opposite sides of the country. Backups are made 4 times an hour and only about a dozen users have access to the server rooms with finger print, password, and retina scan required to enter (I've seen the actual data center and seen the security measures in place). WhaleMail is great. Upload a big file, say 2GB. Enter your friend(s) email address and they get an email with a link to an encrypted download of the file. Fast, secure downloads. Link is good for 14 days or 15 downloads. AOL bought it several months ago but the Time Warner version saw no changes. It's now been re-branded for those Time Warner areas that have now been traded to Comcast.
I don't know about this new AOL branded product though. - Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's a clever name, I gotta give that to them, but they're banking too much on the hope that nobody realizes the X stands for extortion.
- Scipio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We really need Google to give us GDrive ASAP!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@ Ossuary - I really hate being able to use one account for so many things. I'd much rather make individual accounts on every ***** site just so I can access some content or a file or whatever.
Or ***** around on bugmenot every time, which is just as lame.
Dick. - Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Except he said something retarded just before saying nothing.
- DrPiranha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I find it kind of ironic that everyone is shouting "AOL Blows" and things like that for Xdrive, but a few days ago when the AOL Active Virus Shield was being talked about, there weren't many negative comments. In that case, AVS was getting downloaded. So tell me, what's the difference here?
- toddomatic, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4I'm having trouble and receiving errors when trying to create an account.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This might be news when Apple bundles something like it and touts it as dot mac 2.0
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That is because the high speed oc-144 network connection they have connected to all the major universities and bit torrent sites is straining to upload everyone's files ASAP.
"Rush man, there's no time! We need to get toddbinder's porn collection online!" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Battlecry: Yes, but he's learning that it's sometimes better to say nothing, rather than to say something retarded - and we're giving him positive reinforcement. ;)
- aleandro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd hope to think that no ones trusts any corporation with their data.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They have a commercial account which is $9.95 for 50gb of space, and AOL has plenty of cash regardless.
- toxicredm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LAME! It's was difficult to sign up then when it finally accepted my user name it says I have to set my parental controls on aol.com. I'm 32 for crying out loud. Couldn't they figure that out from my birthdate? I go to aol.com to try to change my controls and it asks me to select a security question from a drop down list, but doesn't give me any questions to choose from. ***** AOL!
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I noted that there is a new startup object that says "aolsoftware" This version of xdrive seems to work without it, It doesn't change any browsing habits, however its not clear what it does..
- Johnny2085, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AOL Members get 50GB with their service.
Anyone with a screenname can get 5GB and anyone can get a screenname. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The version of Xdrive that Time Warner uses for their business clients supports FTP transfers also. They also offer a nice utility that will backup files or folders you specify at a specified interval. Nice for keeping current backups for important files.
- OutcastJiob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do we trust AOL with our data? After their search history shenanigans, probably not. However, offering 5GB of remote storage space for free is going to make AOL's competitors sit up and take notice, which should theoretically translate to a wide range of storage solutions like this, but with companies that we would trust with our data.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just got it....very cool.
- pluisje2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I went to Meebo.com and used the link over there to sign up for an AOL account. No US only form there. No need to enter address or other personal details as well.
- patientx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is the "direct transfer from web" plugin ? The linked one on the page seems broken. Can someone find it ?
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I recommend using another backup program which offers incremental backups and gives you the option to encrypt the data, you can then upload to the AOL server safe in the knowledge that its all safe!
- zoom1928, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4What protocols does it support? rsync? scp? Andrews? CODA? NFS? SMB? NCP? FTP? SFTP?
Or are these guys technical idiots and do not support any standard methods of sharing files over networks? - raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've essentially found it worthless for the following reasons:
- Web access is good for a few files on the go, but not for primary method of access (goodbye Mac, goodbye linux)
- Windows client is *extremely* buggy.
It's already uninstalled. I'm turning down 5GB of free storage (which I want), because it's just to unstable. Yuck. - WillDearborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Watch out windows users! Everytime you visit the Xdrive site it installs a nasty piece of spyware in your registry called BargainBuddy. Adaware gets rid of it. Just thought I'd let you all know.
- flyingmonkey350, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well it has stopped now. Hopefully it doenst start again. Diggers BEWARE!!!
- phobozad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one that magically got my account upgraded to 50 gigs for free?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have you ever heard of encryption?
http://www.truecrypt.org/ - aleandro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude this is pretty cool. Now just wait until people start sharing music other this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11Wow! You spelled Microsoft with a dollar sign! You are the funniest guy in the WORLD!
Seriously...how is it possible that you are still doing that and not realizing how ***** stupid you look? - flyingmonkey350, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Well i went ahead and decided i would try this out. I figured whats the worst that could happen none of my pictures or documents i wanted to back up contain anything personal. So i signed up and downloaded the program. I attempted to log in and it said my user name and PW were wrong however i checked and double checked and they were as i thought correct. So my first thoughts were oh well just a waste of a few minutes. Then an auto play window popped up. So I'm thinking ok maybe its gonna work after all. nope. the auto play window disappeared. No big deal you might say. Well this isn't the end of the story. This auto play window now pops up and closes every few seconds. automatically i determine i need to install this program and possibly run some anti spy-ware software. Well none of this has helped and now i have a very irritating auto play window popping up constantly. I should have gone with my gut and said no to AOL.
maybe this is an isolated case but i would greatly caution anyone in trying this service out. - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2coming soon, AOL research, see what people have backed up! You will be able to access anyones files for "educational" purposes.
- richm711, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0FTP replacement. With unlimited upload and download file size at www.singlewrench.com
- jackone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look at this and see if meets your needs.
MailMagic ( http://www.robinsonsoft.com ) - adam8281, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you sign up, you will most likely get a pop-up within minutes that informs you that you've received a free upgrade to 50gogs
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's like having a 5 gig network floppy. Floppy probably transfers faster though.
