You under-state yourself; it appears you've got it figured out my friend :) - DevanJedi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What might be Digg material though is the art of composing a perfect Digg submission so that the Title+Description would *at least* generate a click.
- mjaleo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It didn't have enough Wii in the title?
/Wii-ed out - penguinboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How can anyone call this article great? There are so many grammatical errors that it's quite hard to take it seriously. The author also needs to take his own advice in many instances, as the article is quite wordy.
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My top tip to anyone that has to right copy:
Don't forget to use enough line breaks and paragraphs if nothing else. Huge blocks of text are hard to read on computer monintors at any resolution. Even if you have a megascreen, not everyone of your visitors will. Think ahead! - matseng, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Nice article, but I'd also be interested in seeing a post about the opposite - how to flesh out a text and make it a bit more verbose.
I've got a colleague that can write ridiculous amounts of text about a simple subject. He can write two pages of text where I'd just use one paragraph. I suppose that I'm a bit too terse in my writing sometimes and really would like to make it a bit more enjoyable to read.
On the other hand, maybe it's better to be too terse then too verbose :-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did I miss the tip about not using commas?
- dave_colorado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think he makes really valid points. In a business website, you have about 10 seconds max to communicate your initial points to the visitor before he/she leaves. So you have to convince them to stay.
Now, what he doesn't mention is the balancing act...
If you want to get high search engine rankings which is also crucial for business, you have to have lots of copy on your site. Search engines loves pages that have very little excess markup and images and use lots of text based navigation and lots of words. Also, you can't add your keywords too many times on your page or the search engines assume you're spamming. 5-7 times per major keyword per page. Each page should be targeted to one specific keyword, but perhaps include a couple others just for variation.
So you have to effectively communicate your point to users which requires brevity, but at the same time you have to make your page search engine friendly.
oh yeah, get lots of links to your site. don't link back.
yup. peace out diggers. - Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@paedomorphic "Digg is a technology website"
And being that the lack of good writing skills is endemic throughout the technology industry, this article is very relevant. Digg+ - haonanzhang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1more dos and donts from the Economist:
http://www.economist.com/research/StyleGuide/ - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Not relevant to Digg eh?
Let's look at the checklist:
Related to technology? Check.
Related to people? Check
Related to making things better in the world? Check.
It's got three out of a long list - but it's a good three. Sounds like you need to expand your horizons. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I don't see what "related to people" has to do with Digg, and "related to making things better in the world" is just so completely off-base that I think you might be putting me on. Digg is not a liberal social program. Digg is not a charitable organization. Digg is not your church. Digg is a technology news website.
- converse01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Great Article.
