- Rtaylor32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58Only if they become as lame as Netscape. No I see them buying Digg before making a Digg clone ex nihilo.
- vyoming, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35or google could just buy digg
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Right. And no-one ever complains about the volume of Ubuntu or Mac stories making it to the front page here, do they?
- jmacdonagh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Nobody searches for "digg". They simply hit digg.com. That's why the trend is so low.
- MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Don't like googles search results? Want to be more active in modifying them?
Ask for it!
http://www.google.com/support/bin/request.py
Personally I sent in a request that they add a "Report as Spam" link next to the "Cached" and "Similar Results" links that show up for each and every search result when you make a query. This way the user can take a more active roll in the search results. You could even put something in stipulating that the user should have to have a google account, so as to help minimize the amount of false positives. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Sell out! Not "sale out"
- screampants, on 10/12/2007, -28/+49The content would be awful. It would just be flooded with junk like their 'search'
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -12/+27Google buying Digg? Oh, the magnitude of Google fanboys that infest Digg would just LOVE that. Ooh, imagine if it ran off a server running Mac OSX and using an AMD processor run by an admin playing a Nintendo DS. Damn you can almost smell the fanboy spunk already...
(All we would need then are some "AMAZING" photos.) - Yupp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I can only imagine what Google will call their version...
Diggle? - hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@millixaw
yeah because digg Fanboys are *so* less annoying. - DevlinD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Well Google's service could only be flooded with crap if they continue to let algorithms do the work. If they were to come up with something like Digg I could see it being very successful, having users do the work of algorithms would at least combat the spam/garbage problem, plus Google would have a host of other applications that they would somehow be able to tie into this service, and that is one place where they have Digg licked.
No disrespect to the Digg team whatsoever, I mean the guys at Google would have to work their butts off to make a site as beautiful and functional as this one, as a matter of fact an exact clone of this site is probably the best they could hope for. But like any other piece of software whether it be a web based service or an archaic mainframe, the real value of any software is determined by how it integrates with other existing useful applications.
This is exactly how MS has built its billions over the years, not by providing better software per se, but providing software that can collaborate with other software to form a more complete solution. If Google were to play their cards right and built a system that would offer the users inherently greater value through integration than using a more isolated application such as Digg, I hate to say it but I dont think Digg would stand a chance unless it was bought by Yahoo!...MS would probably just drive it straight into the ground using an endless completely unordered list of topics which you cannot scroll through or use the back button to escape from ala live.com - radzie78, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Why compete when they can buy digg?
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15I agree! Kevin, cash in and head for the hills!!!
- ryanknapper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Being able to vote on news stories would be a great addition to any news site.
- Porsche944, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9this is a really dumb article that was created to just make money off ads. This is pure speculation. I hate junk like this on Digg.
- middleman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It would probably be in Googles best intrests to partner up with Digg instead of buying them out. I think google would ruin Digg if they did buy it out. They might try and change the color schemes and all kinds of stuff. Digg kind of needs to be its own identity in order for it to work properly.
I just dont see it as a good thing if google gets involved. - screampants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7people don't search for digg, its a destination you go there to search for stories, we call it 'digging'. Everytime a google search is done of course it registers with them. Here is what a search brings up:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=some+stupid+stuff&btnG=Google+Search notice their name? - hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6where do you people get this crap? There are plenty of algorithims behind Digg.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7For you people saying 'people don't search for digg' I think it's time for you to be whacked with the clue-stick: PEOPLE DON"T SEARCH FOR GOOGLE ON GOOGLE EITHER!
- middleman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like this one better

Check out india under regions. Wow. - a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What if Google _____________?
There will always be Google speculations.....gosh. - vedichymn, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16Oh, you mean like digg?
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"...competent user generated content..."
I would think twice before calling most Digg users competent. - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Exactly. Why do people insult Digg users? I mean, *you* are a Digg user!
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7and the world will end...
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Blogger still has its original color scheme, AFAIK. It certainly doesn't look like other Google pages.
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@middleman
"Check out india under regions. Wow."
I think india is just trying to overcompensate for something.... I'm not saying what, I'm just saying. ;-) - AKBryant54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3no guys, i think hes being sarcastic.
i mean, no one can be that dumb.. right? - RonAcierno, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Yea i think they would just buy them ... the colors would even match ...
- supert0ad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3news.google.com. it is way more advanced than digg, the front page can be personalized for each user, and stories are promoted by how often they are read, not dugg. also, it supports localization
the only thing they're missing is comments, but really, if you have something to say about the news, just blog about it - databasecowboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The real question is can Digg compete with Digg? Now that Digg has turned the corner from being a tech news site to a 'lifestyle' site will it dilute itself and become as irrelevant as techTV just to draw in the numbers? Already I have noticed that the news is slipping. Most interesting stuff is posted on Slashdot or Boingboing hours before.
The Digg podcast went that way sometime ago. But that is mostly due to how annoying sidekick Alex's voice sounds: like a screechy sorority girl... and the crap that comes out of his mouth! Does he know anything about technology? Or even think before he speaks? He is almost always wrong and Kevin rarely corrects him and often seems to concur. The whole show just comes off as dumb blather.
Maybe they enjoy the beer just a tad too much. Hold your liquor boys.
Sometimes I wonder if they are a joke concocted by Harry Shearer? Well, in that case it is funny. - diggless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3here is an interesting one
http://google.com/trends?q=google%2C+yahoo&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That may also be the most repeated question in the thread.
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You have to also tie Digg and Apple in there to get automatic front page.
"Google to sell nuclear weapons to Digg (could they use them against Apple?)" - Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sony < Microsoft < Google < Apple < Digg
I think that about sums up everyone's opinions. Did I miss anything?
Google could definitely compete with digg. I'll go as far as to say it would be in their best interests to form a web-based community. Not a clone though. - AKBryant54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3- digg because you said 'for seriously'
- Fatalis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2people google for various reasons, not just to find a resource, thus — I think it's feasible to say that people *do* google for Google
- spyro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6My thoughts exactly.
- sizemoresr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe not Google, but Yahoo probably could. Yahoo understands the value of community.
- LFTravel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think that it would be in Google's interest to buy Digg. I'm not a fan of Google though. Bad idea.
- dbre2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Probably looking for something that compares traffic: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?compare_sites=google.com&range=6m&size=medium&y=r&url=digg.com
- screampants, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@rtaylor, vyoming, radzie
At this point there would be very little incentive for digg owners to sell to google. They are in a niche that google cannot compete with (competent user generated content). Sure they could get tons of money right away for doing it or they could get the same by letting it run its course and make that same money and be immortalized as they are. - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heh, those articles were experiments, but touche. I'm not exactly what one would call a contributor, more of a general *****.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Impartial MY ASS. Have you seen the censorship on Digg? Look at the comment system: "George bush is a dumbass" gets +328492, while anything intelligent that may or may not say ANYTHING bad about apple gets immediately buried into Oblivion.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg and Google are too different animals. Google is an algorithim, Digg is human-indexed.
- databasecowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a stretch to equate the BBC with Digg. A long stretch. Not just on impartiality, but on integrity, intelligence, cohesion and relevance.
- insidiousrex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To put Digg (and no offense) in the same 'competitive' space with Google is giving Digg quite a bit of credit as far as that headline goes period (not a question)
- d4rthsid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Writely has still maintained its look and color scheme. I only hope they integrate the chat feature from google spreadsheets, and be able to send/compose/attach documents to a gmail message.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Diggr
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People keep mentioning how google thanks to mining its search data can see how lucrative digg is.
What about all the google ads on digg? Google knows exactly how much digg brings in. Google could easily do a cost/benefit analysis, see how much Digg brings in, then decide it's more lucrative to create a competitor and canibalize digg's traffic, linking to their competitor over digg. Meanwhile Digg is displaying google advertising, hoping and praying google will play fair.
IMO, if you have a lucrative site like digg, google is the last company I'd use for advertising. Google dabbles in too many spaces, I'd opt for a pure advertising network, not one who can peer through my data then stomp on me in the future. -
