- Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+88I live in one, so quite often. I had to vote down U-Haul, the lack of accomodations within one of their trailers is appaling. Granted the overhead halogen bulb is a nice touch.. but with no running water or insulation, they are the worst around.
- GMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+86I've been screwed by UHaul, sure. Badly. But at least UHaul can't screw you unless you decide to do business with them. You could be sued by the RIAA even if you're deaf and don't own a computer.
- bitterg, on 10/12/2007, -20/+100RIAA isn't a company.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -8/+71The RIAA has a chairman, a board of directors and a CEO. What definition of company are you using?
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53Or dead.
- whirlwind12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45At least UHaul offers a useful product..........what does the RIAA do for me?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39How often do you use U-haul?
- unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32@paleghost
Thanks for verifying that not only is U-Haul a crappy company, it is also filled with humorless employees. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29I'll tell you why:
I live in Pittsburgh, PA and my extended family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, cousins of cousins, etc) make it a point to spend 1 or 2 weeks at the outer banks, North Carolina every summer. One summer, we rented a U-Haul trailer to haul some of our stuff down there... We got to Indian Springs, Maryland and then the wheel bearing in the trailer cought fire. Not only this, but we had four fully-filled tanks of propane in the trailer. We pulled off the road, got the fire out, packed the stuff into the cars, and Called U-Haul. It took them 7 hours to send someone out to get the damned thing. The kicker is that the trailer had passed U-Haul's safety inspection just before we picked it up.
I then spent 4 hours straddling a propane tank in the car, and an additional 6 hours the next day.
I still voted for the RIAA though. - SLYK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Thanks for clearing that up. Dip.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I voted RIAA, but if you've ever actually done business with U-haul then you know it's a close call.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18U-haul treats it's customers like dirt.
RIAA treats it's customers like criminals.
I think I'd rather be dirt. - Nooze2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I think the biggest complaint I've seen with UHaul is the condition of the trucks themselves. I've heard numerous horror stories about trucks and trailers with broken axles, brakes, tire/wheel problems, etc. In fact, the investigative news show 'W5' on CTV up here in Canada did a report on the misgivings and problems of UHaul. Personally, because of the reputation of UHaul, I've turned to their competitors when needing to rent a truck.
- arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12You know, I don't think my day would be complete without a link to gigatribe on a story about the RIAA. It's like coffee in the morning, I can't function until I come across it.
Now I can go merrily about my day. - CobolNoFun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18true the RIAA is set up like a company. But the RIAA's customer service consists of lawyers. If you have any personal experience with their "customer service" you were probably getting sued. Or you were a band and you were probably getting screwed.
Either way i would still say uHaul looses. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12My local u-haul has this sign in front of its store - truck rental 19.99 plus mileage. You rent the truck and when you go to pay they tell you insurance is mandatory, so it's really 29.99. If you call and ask them how much it is, they won't tell you about the insurance, even if you ask about extra fees.
- displaynone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Imagine if they swiched places. U-Haul would sell you an empty CD case and not give you a refund, while the RIAA would rent you a truck, but only let you drive it on roads they approve, and your friends wouldn't be able to help with the move.
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16I wish I could vote for the Consumerist.
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I moved from southern California to Washington state once (1200 miles). Uhaul gave me a truck with a sticker on the dash that said " For local use only". That's because it was a ragged-out piece of crap with bald tires and a dying transmission. It made horrible shrieking and grinding noises all the way up through California.
While going through the mountains just south of Grant's Pass Oregon, the main drive gear exploded, and I had to complete the trip in second gear with the poor rattly motor just screaming to keep the thing going 50 mph.
I rented a truck a few years later to move from Knoxville TN to where I am now (25 miles), and the truck did something weird where the brakes locked when I put the truck in reverse and an alarm would go off. I couldn't get the broken thing out of my driveway. I called the Uhaul guys, and they picked it up with a tow truck the next day. I then had to argue over the phone that I was NOT going to pay for an extra rental day. I won the argument, but I shouldn't have had to argue in the first place. - sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12whatever, bonch. ***** the RIAA.
- thumbup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10News flash: RIAA wins vote in landslide.
- Aero1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9why do we hate uhaul?
- DerGeist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7More like:
You order a CD of Slayer, go to pick it up, and they hand you an eight-track of Billy Ray and the Sunshine Kids. The sign outside said "All CDs $9.99!" but you find out you have to pay for insurance in the event that you break the CD while bringing it home. So it is now $29.99 and you must pay more for each track that you listen to. You angrily pay and leave, only to find out the box is empty and fell apart when you tried to open it. They refuse to give you a refund.
In the other case:
You sit at home, thinking about moving to a warmer climate. You are suddenly sued for owning a car, because you might just perform the move yourself. If you pay an exorbitant amount of money, they will overlook your evildoings for now. You pay them, unable to defend yourself. Then they sue you anyway, because you car had gas in it, meaning for sure you were planning a move without their permission. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Rent something from them, and find out.
- doktorrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My biggest beef with U-Haul is that reservations don't actually "reserve" you anything. Show up and what you wanted, they don't have. This has happened twice. One time helping some friends move, and they actually did have a truck. The guy behind the counter said "You're lucky you got here early, we rented this truck to two other people today".
So they overbook, which is not a totally unheard of practice. The problem is that people don't generally have a whole lot of flexibility in the dates they move. If they need to be out of someplace by the end of the weekend and the truck isn't there, problems arise.
I suspect a lot of people cancel, but my proposal for that problem is to take non-refundable deposits, rather than overbooking. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I've never had a problem with U-Haul. Moving sucks, but that's not their fault.
Worst company in America? What about Halliburton? Phillip Morris? General Electric? - nagaisu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@paleghost
"Most of the problems were caused by the DRIVER to begin with, so it's not all our fault."
You are definitely working for the right company man. Is that ***** step 1 in the company handbook? I've dealt with U-haul customer service and YOU SUCK! You are just further proof. - moofer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Comcast is going to kick everyone's ass in that competition. They'll make movies about it.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=comcastic - eetraveller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Oh and there's one more "policy" I discovered at U-Haul on the weekend. If you're more than 15mins late returning the truck, you have to pay for an entire extra day. And they're serious about this - 16mins and you pay. That's just how their software calculates the bill, with no ability to waive it for special circumstances. But this must have been clearly stated on the contract, right? Well it said:
"If equipment is not returned by the designated time, some charges may apply"
Yeah not that clear. - rightofcenter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I worked for Uhaul while I was in junior college, and let me say, we could do whatever we wanted to.
Free gas, free company dinners every week with teh staff, and any time I asked if we were accountable for what we did, manager and coworkers just told me "the owners (upper level management maybe they meant?) are drug addicts" lol
Oh yeah, dont ever get a hitch installed there either, I was a "certified hitch installer" or some crap and I didnt know the first thing, we just kinda slapped them on the cars trial and error style. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The quality of service in a UHaul varies by location. Last time I rented a truck the first place I went to were a bunch of dicks and not very helpful. The next place (different owners) were very nice and helped me to get the truck at the cheapest rate.
- furyg3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My two experiances with U-Haul
1) I was helping a friend move, and called up uhaul to rent a small trailer. I made a reservation, and told them I had a towing package on my dodge durango, and I had various sizes of ball-mounts but no adapter for the electrical. They said it's no problem, they'll hook it up and have everything I need. I asked them to clarify (knowing their nickel-and-dime nature), would I have to buy a hookup, or would they provide it? They said they'd provide it.
Upon arriving they told me they didn't have it, the only one they had for Dodge was already loaned out. They said they'd sell me one though ;) If they *have* them for sale, and they're running out, clearly they should sell themselves one and loan it to me... Of course they didn't want to do that. After about 15 minutes of discussion they told me i could buy it and return it when I came back. I even got the guys name. Guess what? They conveniently forgot.
2) Had to help a relative move, who lived a good distance away. I called, reserved a truck, and then drove all the way out there to find out that they rented that size out. They'd give me a (much) smaller truck, but it would mean that the move would take much much much longer. They refused to give me a smaller truck with a trailer attached, which would mean it would only take twice as long as if they had rented me the original size. When I asked why they couldn't give me a *bigger* truck, they said "those are already rented out". Well, the truck I reserved was already "rented out", but that didn't stop them from giving it to someone else, did it?
U-Haul is a pain in the ass. I now use a smaller rental company whenever I'm moving things around, even though they're more expensive, because I don't have the time to argue with someone all day when I should be "Hauling". - TheKricket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5very good atacand! you DONT have to buy things from companies you dont like...
but when you get older, youll understand the power of "spreading the word" - how people with friends like to tell them about their bad and good experiences with companies - and what, in turn, these types of conversations can do for business
but, baby steps, my friend - you're heading in the right path - i have faith that you'll figure it out some day... - LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The RIAA is the worst anything anywhere. So I voted RIAA.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5goat1 got there first. :/
- Ozymandias42, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14You'd better hope your U-Haul doesn't loose! If it loosed on a highway, everybody loses.
- jsavage58, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7order truck/pick it up. it should be so easy. I have had the misfortune of needed a moving truck a few times and tried to use Uhaul. Trucks promised are never there, the wrong truck is there, etc. That really puts people in a bind when they have a home that is packed and ready to go, but nothing to move it with. UHAUL is by for the worst company out there when it comes to this.
- fix8ed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@paleghost
U-haul's customer service and policies blow.
I found this out first hand over the holidays when I tried to rent a trailer. I called the 1-800-gouhaul and was told after I paid my "reservation fee," that there was no guarantee that my trailer was even reserved. WTF? So U-haul took my cash and told me they would "try" to find a trailer. They didn't find one. My fee was non-refundable. What kind of ***** is that? - MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"U-Haul is the worst! I was "banned for life" by them for insisting on a receipt (still didn't get the receipt)."
Somehow I get the feeling there's more to the story than that. - patience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4RIAA is an association therefore its a nonprofit. Its members ARE the companies.
"The RIAA is a nonprofit industry trade group that represents companies, both small and large, that create, manufacture and distribute over 90 percent of the sound recording in the US."
http://www.its.caltech.edu/its/help/policies/riaa/riaa.shtml
If we are going to defeat the RIAA, we should at least understand it. - kristov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The real problem I think with UHAUL is they hire a bunch of ex-cons because no one else is willing to work at such a crappy company.
It wins my vote by a landslide - but I haven't been sued by the RIAA yet so there is time for me to change my mind. - kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They're a cartel.
- videozine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ahhh U Haul. I am a former U Haul employee, but I come from the halcyon days when the company was good. Sorry, NOT good but a great company to work for.
This was back in the days when the original founder still ran the company, not his good for nothing sons. Did you know that LS Schoen gave his sons control of the company then they sent him packing into the sunset?
It was a fight of mythical proportions. But now the sons run the company and it is going to hell in a handbasket. It’s a real shame to see a once proud company totally disintegrate practically before your eyes. - logicalnoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4true however in the RIAA's case they assume the interests of artist who are contractully in debt to them and sue the evry people who keep the artists in the public eye. Then they never actully use the money absorbed in the lawsuits on the artists. Instead the money gets used on more lawsuits and "anti-pirate" propoganda that just lowers the overall view of the major music industry. So in thsi case you never buy anything from the RIAA but they make the overall experience of buying music terrible.
- DigiRaven, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Now what is wrong with Uhaul? Pick up truck and you haul your crap.
- chris182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've never had a problem with U-Haul. The best part is paying the $10 for insurance (or whatever the price is) and driving the trucks like you stole them! -- while my crap is not in the back of course ;)
- tofslie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uhaul is the WORST company you deal with directly. RIAA is the WORST Behind the scenes company/organization.
- ateach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3U-Haul is the worst! I was "banned for life" by them for insisting on a receipt (still didn't get the receipt).
- Moskie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea, those pictures aren't biased.
Do you hate the company that prosecutes 12 year olds!?!?!?!
... or this cute stuffed toy?
Tough choice. - ArnoldTPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I rented a truck from U-Haul the other day. I picked it up after they were closed. Drove it ten miles total. They told me I drove it 60 miles. The truck had 50 more miles on it when I left than what they said it had. After days of calling and emailing they finally gave me a refund.
