Yeah, maybe so, but the Roman Empire is dead. Our light bulb still works. =P - aTriangulumRoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wouldn't firehouses have to have some alternative power source in case of a blackout?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if it was running during blackouts too.
- DardanAeneas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder why carbon filaments didn't catch on? heh
- Steel_Blue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, that thing is so... useless... It's going to be awesome when it burns out though.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when this bulb goes out 70% of that town's economy will be destroyed.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I WANT A TSHIRT
- TeknoTurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Leer: Please don't ever use the "Livermore" and "awesome" in the same sentence ever again. Unless you're saying something like "Livermore is awesome at being the most boring town in the Bay Area!"
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In one of the pictures it looks like the wires inside the bulb spell 'ON'
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The night shift janitor replaces it every couple years. He doesn't speak english though, so nobody knows about it.
- andreizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is kind of lame.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ROFL. Haha that's so true.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I haven't heard it, its news to me.
The bulb sure isn't very bright...ahahahahahaha...get it...bright...knowledge...college....Family Guy!
OMFG - zodiacal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they probably change it every day just for that reason
- irobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems like an insult to have a fluorescent light right next to it...
- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet you if that light was turned on and off every few hours it would go out like any other light. As most know lights usually burn out when they are cold (as in not warmed up) and you try to turn it on.
Carbon filament lights never caught on because they are so yellow and aren't that bright. We have a very old theater in Chicago that gets carbon filament bulbs specially made for it. - adiaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:)), anyway that is a very weak lightbulb. Only 4 W?
- sn0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ahh nice, i'll have to go check it out, its only like a 45 min drive away.. would be a nice outing for the lil lady.. :-D

http://sn0n.com/ - mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some people in other countries don't know about the most obscure intersting things about the USA. Open your mind, sheesh.
Anyways, this is pretty cool. If i ever go to Cali i'll check it out. - noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. This is almost as interesting as the World's Second Largest Ball of 40% Cotton Twine. Almost. But not quite.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It seems like an insult to have a fluorescent light right next to it..."
I know, I was just thinking that. - Wiser87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry to burst your bubble masterzora, but I live less than 40 miles from Livermore and I've never heard of it anywhere until now.
- Leer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TeknoTurd- I only say that because the fusion in the labs and the fact that there redoing downtown. It is preety boring here but come 2008 this place will be great.
- apheleon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is bound to burn out next week.
kind of that like "one of a kind" tube wax record that was shown on the call for help marathon... - Leer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I LIVE THERE
IVE SEEN IT IN REAL LIFE! dude the people are so corny, there like:
"If you look at it this way it says ON, but if you turn around and ask yourself the question: will it ever go out? its response is no! harharhar"
bunch of tards, but its awesome here in livermore, with the lab, my school is like 3 blocks away from there - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My life now feels so much more complete.
- anarcation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, but the site is getting hammered...
- Dirtydog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess posting "Old!" here would be kind of pointless? :-P
-Josh - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They sure as hell don't make 'em like they used to.
Just prior to 1910 a clandestine meeting took place amongst the worlds light bulb manufacturers who then decided product market price caps and lifespan. Though such action was theoretically illegal, no political or private entity cared to intervene as they relied upon this revolutionary technology to increase worker productivity and reduce operating costs. Thus, we have been left with the current consumer light bulb product, which insures GE, Sylvania and the like to receive annual revenue from each and every consumer.
Yeah... I totally made that all up, but can you prove it untrue? - anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone go shoot it! :P
- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That lightbulb has:
A banner, a webcam, its own American Flag, a letter from George W. Bush, and its own website. I'm glad the lightbulb has been burning for so long, but damn. - hogrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i second that.... I wanting a tshirt!
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@someone2:
I believe that this is the longest continuously lit bulb, not just simply working. - Lighthouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey hans, if america was around back we woulda been the romans...
and we'd have lightbulbs too. - Alexempire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey!!I subbmitted that story a month ago!! Whats going on! aTriangulumRoomyou copied my story! http://digg.com/technology/Web_cam_of_light_bulb_that_hasn_t_been_turned_of_since_1901_
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03 hours after reading this story... my desk light burned out!! Coincidence?
- SenatorPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Livermore is awesome at having the most PhD's per capita in the world, outside of the staff housing at a university.
- rydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0worst website design ever!
Cool bulb though +digg - Riggs54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing better than the "bulb cam"
hahahaha ownage - Iakona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice. Old school at work.
- Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that the janitor just keeps replacing it to keep the town's economy up :)
- greenlight2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone else read the title and think "Cool, I'm gonna read about a 123 foot long light bulb"?
'The longest working lightbulb' got my hopes up. - Digital.Totem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is my theory, any light bulb should be able to do this if you turn it on and it is constantly powered, because all the light bulbs I've ever seen burn out do so when you try to turn them on 1 too many times. If they ever lose power to it they are screwed.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't read Croatian, but it seems their bulb is older. I think Ripley's should go check that out.
- Scoobysnax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Over the past 104 years this bulb has consumed 3,644 kWh of electricity. How much would that cost today?
- squelch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It may not have been big news, but I clearly remember hearing about it, including quite detailed facts as 4 watts, 1901, and Livermore. I live in Maryland. Maybe I just have a strange family, which informs me of such oddities, or... this is really old news.
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How long is it?
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@Wiser:
How is my bubble burst? Reread my original post :)
I'm just sayin'... - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+04 watts though. It was proabbly made to run on 40 watts and they run it on 4 to make it last forever. :-/
