- ph34rhk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If everyone jumps around the world at the same time... wouldn't the people on one side push back the people on the other side, so the world really wouldn't do anything?
- Sharky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds stupid. Yes, let's ruin the balance of the universe, great idea! Take that pollution!
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stupid. I direct you to the flat earth society. More realistic than this. lol

ERic Wilson - kjartan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol I can't believe that you guys are taking this so seriously *coughEnder1158cough*. And besides--of course it'll work. duh!
- pmcall221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All the people in the world couldn't shift earths orbit. To transfer momentum everybody would have to jump high enough to leave earths gravity. And even then the momentum transferred wouldn't be enough. Total bogus.
- rideaurocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does that headline make sense to anyone? Not grammatically but the whole concept. Sounds like something one would come up with after smoking a lot of pot. Lame
- emblym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wouldn't work first of all, and wouldn't this cause more warming. The orbit is larger so we're getting even closer to the Sun."
No.......not even close. The sun is in the center of everything. With a larger orbit the sun would be farther away. At least they thought that part through. - reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't work first of all, and wouldn't this cause more warming. The orbit is larger so we're getting even closer to the Sun.

Will. Not. Work. Remember that "equal and opposite reaction" rule? The same amount of energy imparted to the Earth by your jump will be taken away by the gravitational attraction that pulls you back down! Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't analyzed the physics of the situation sufficiently.
more like the force you exert jumping up will be the same as you exert when u land.
noone who actually understood sesame street's physics episode should think otherwise.
it makes as much sense as saying that the earth's climate would be increased by all those people exerting themselves and adding that heat to atmosphere, just silly.
" I know it would work" wrong
" will actually help to mitigate global warming." wrongest person in wrong town
" I personally don't think you could effect the earth by doing this" your unsure?
"The orbit is larger so we're getting even closer to the Sun." uh
attention however is what it's all about, which hopefully this can do some thing. and I'm not trying to rip on anyone, but how are you supposed to convince people about climate change when you ... well believe in nonsense? - Jakesterama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I think that I just got more dumb after seeing this site, and reading how people think it will work. It is simple physics. We are all on earth, so we can't change its motion. It would be like sitting in your car and trying to push on the dashboard to make it go.
- zeroed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Math and Science. If we assume that everyone participating in this event weights 200 lb, that translates to about 890 Newtons. The mass of each person, therefor, is 91 kg. PE=mgh, so Potential Energy=mass*gravity*height. If we stretch it, and assume each person is going to jump 1 meter (about 3 feet), the Potential Energy of one person participating is 890 Joules. If they reach their goal, and 600,000,000 people participate, a net potential energy=534,000,000,000 joules. Just some number crunching. I'm not sure its going to work, but hey, its not like I have any other plans on that day.

- Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i seriousll seriously doubt that even that many people have enough mass to make a difference
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't you need all 600.000.000 people to be like int he same city or somrthing? also if that were the case, wouldn't this cause an earthquake in said city.... QUICK, EVERYONE TO LA. LOL
- nulall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesomest. thing. ever.
- Straudlater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cecil Adams has something to say about this inane idea: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_155.html
Hilarity! - aristofeles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0`The Intelligence Quotient of any meeting can be determined by starting with 100 and subtracting 5 points for each participant`
Now it begins to make sense.... - Altair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have heard of this idea before, I know it would work, and I am going to jump my hardest that day
- holmesxt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"QUICK, EVERYONE TO LA"
LOL!! - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL! Has anyone drawn an upside down star on something to confirm this?
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I SUPPORT THIS EVENT!
---------------------
An event such as this will actually help to mitigate global warming. The combined force of 200m people actually jumping up and down simultaneously actually does have an impact. The circumference of the Earth is decreased by a combined total of 2.3mm every time this event is held. You can see that, over time, as these events are held worldwide, the Earth will become smaller and smaller. As the Earth becomes smaller, the distance of the surface becomes futher away from the sun. With the surface further away, it absorbs less heat. With less heat, you've mitigated global warming. And so that is why we must support World Jump Day. - Azimuth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THE ONLY WAY POSSIBLE TO HAVE SOME EFFECT is to jump up and NEVER come back...then hm you would have to jump up at over 11 km/second.. Good luck!
lol - mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok........
- Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can see it now we will go flying out of orbit and go right into the sun but when we go into it we find out that it was a black hole and so we get teleported to the other side of the galaxy where we find a new planet so we send a shuttle with some people on it to the planet and they meet a guy named timmy and timmy shows them his wonderful planet but then he eats them! Then timmy comes for earth and he wipes out the human race......all becuase of world jump day......
- wheremyarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, it seems like all of you don't realize this is based on several scientific reports. You can click "more info" to watch videos about them.
It's amazing how many of you are more qualified than NASA scientists to determine the outcome of World Jump Day. Simply amazing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not one of the best ideas I have ever heard but, whatever. I personally don't think you could effect the earth by doing this.
- Azimuth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea just checked it, its 11.1 km/sec at the Earth's surface. That is the MINIMUM speed to achieve to never fall back on earth. Again at 8 km/sec u are still technically falling, just around not on the Earth, but physically it still produces the same effect as though u did fall on the surface.
- macman81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL Yay! It's on my birthday too!
- rookieone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol...could you imagine someone saying... "im going to participate in WJD!" and after they participate the world is coming to the end and what not...there gonna be like "WJD? Man who participated in that? We should get rid of em!!" haha...man what makes u think sometin like that could happen? LMAO!!!!
- darkwhisper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can see this ***** something up
- ORBIT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jmccorm, then it's not really trolling is it? ;) smiley face
- TheLlamaIs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If we're making the earth shrink every time we do this arn't we increasing its density and mass therefore directly effecting it's gravitational pull... Wouldn't the higher mass then INCREASE the effects of gravity and structures that weren't designed to deal with this new gravity would basically crumble under their own weight.... ?
Not to mention with increased gravity the earth would pull the moon closer, which would raise water levels around the world and quite possibly sink a few cities....
Wouldn't it? - jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WWJD? OMG! WJD. LOL.
- sohmageek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok now... Let's just say it would work, if everyone jumped... but WHY in the WORLD would they want everyone to jump at the same time? Wouldn't this just make it pointless. I agree it's dumb to begin with, but just if someone jumps on this side of the world at the same time someone does on the other side... wouldn't that counteract? I remember thinking of this when I was like 7...
- Guti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hehe thats nice, I'll mark it down in my cellphone.
Hope I'll keep it long enough. - NINJ4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Over a million people have registered since this was posted...lol...they need a little over a million people a day...it's less than 390 days away and let's say that it's 381 from today (July 4th, 2005). That means they'd need an AVERAGE of 1,058,955 people per day to sign up to make this reaech the 600,000,000 mark...they should have pushed it into the future more, lol.
- antimattr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cbc's quirks and quarks discussed this in their questions episode. the respondent scientist/professor confirmed that it is absolute garbage.
- mr_mechanics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think about this: The volume of most of the bodies of water in the world is 1370 million km³. Ignoring that density is a function of pressure, that is a mass of 1.37x10^18 kg, roughly. The mass of the earth is 5.9742x10^24kg. The average mass of a person is roughly 80kg*600 million=4.8x10^10kg. Your more likely to affect the weather of the world if 600 million people sneezed at the same time. That would create all kinds of hurricanes, tornadoes, and storms. It would be just like that Michael Jackson video where the world spins backwards and all the poached elephants are brought back to life. This much more scientific approach will get rid off all the pollution in the world and hopefully get rid of my STD's. So we all need to sneeze at the same time, for the sake of my health.
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see I need to put a smiley face at the end of my trolls.
- witblits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well.. so far there are 218.860.839 idiots registered who think it will work.
wonder if there will be another 600.000.000 people against the idea and form a anti-WJD.jumping at the same time on the opposite side...lol - Azimuth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well perhaps you should scroll up and read good sir
and to ur amazement you will find people who actually believe this will work - not due to stupidity, but due to ignorance.
One way to make them see the reality is not through calling them stupid...but perhaps through a little algebra?
Mind over matter - stupid_ppl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cannot believe that there are people actually stupid enough to believe this. It's a friggin joke, lads. Get on with you lives. Sitting around using your physics degrees to figure out if this joke could work or not, seriously. IT'S A DAMN JOKE. It's a funny one, too. Just laugh and move on. Morons. I'll bet you're Americans.
- Azimuth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No its very close to 11 km/sec. 8 (closely 7.6) is not the escape velocity. By reaching 8 km/sec all u are doing is never coming back to the surface. Being in orbit around Earth (8-11 km/sec), Earth still exerts its gravitation pull on you, and you exert it on Earth. As you circle around it, At one point you are attracting it, then as you are on the other side of the planet attracting it again, but now in opposite direction from that of the first time, therefore producting a NET 0 effect. Basically as long as you are withing the Gravitational field of the body, you cannot produce any effect on it in another gravitational field....meaning since we want to change the orbit of Earth in the Sun's gravitational field, WE MUST be in Sun's gravitational field to have that change (therefore the 11 km/sec escape velocity). Remaining in Earth's gravitaational field, you cannot have any effect on its orbit around the sun - conservation of momentum.
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its a joke. Ya know, just for fun. Duh?
- zebde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that german professor hasn't taken the consideration of the moon, seas, gravity, NOTHING!!!
what will happen if we moved and the moon became a tenth planet in our solar system??
what will happen to famous landmark? who's got the money to rebuild all these historic and famous buildings?
if the earth got closer to mars, will they make some kind of a force and collide???
we must do something about it!! who's with me? - donson1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope you all read this comment because that site is a HOAX. The website is registered to an artist known as Torsten Lauschmann who has been known to pull similar stunts in the past. The video of scientist Hans Peter Niesward is actually Lauschmann with a coat and nerdy glasses. Plus the idea violates a couple laws of physics.
- marymaier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There've already been two of this same story.
It wont work, but I signed up anyway just for fun. - donson1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know how this site works, but if anyone can remove that link go ahead and do so. I hate to see people get sucked in by hoaxes like this and waste time debating them.
- Neo1971, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe to avoid all the problems of jumping and falling down again (=0) they would better have said to jump FROM something (chair, small ladder, ...), this would simplify things and would give more result if any than the original plan... LOL ;-))
Don't have to be that smart for it to even see this one comming..... - mr_mechanics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's actually only 8km/s, but no bid deal. Anyone trying to use physics on this is wasting their time. First of all, the earth is not in a non-inertial frame of reference. Normally this is no big deal since the earth exerts the most dominating and pervasive force experienced on earth. But anyone with any real knowledge of physics, especially astrophysics, can also let you know that this is nonsense. Hope I'm not already beating a dead horse, but people need to know. I said it earlier and I'll say it again. You really want to change things? Blow up the moon.
