- arunforce, on 10/10/2007, -7/+73I joined the BitTorrent scene right after SuprNova fell. I'm eager to find out what was so good about it. =)
- Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -2/+59Was THE place to get torrents. Indexed from EVERY site.
- Scabdates, on 10/10/2007, -0/+39You guys do realize the two sites aren't even the same thing?
The Pirate Bay is a BitTorrent tracker. Suprnova is a BitTorrent indexer.
Supernova is like isoHunt.
The Piratebay is like a public Demonoid. - benitojuarez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+36Thats exactly what this is about, a fistfull of cash. I don't know how much tpb makes a year in ad revenues, that several million a week or whatever that was "reported" a few days ago is bogus I'm sure, but they don't make an insubstantial amount of money. I'm willing to bet suprnova will end up being a mirror of tpb with suprnova window dressing in order to sell more adspace.
- mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23You must be going to crapy private sites.
- andrew522, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18no... suprnova was freaking amazing. it had a complete monopoly over everything torrents. mininova is nice, but imagine TPB, demonoid, and Torrentbox all in one site -- that was the scale of suprnova at the time.
- Subterfug, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15The guys behind TPB said that there needs to be more trackers. TBP accounts for 50% of all torrents which is bad because if (god forbid) some authorities manage to take down TPB, then that will be a huge blow. So creating more torrent trackers is a good idea in the name of survivability.
- Nerfdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Pirate Bay: so pirate, we steal from pirates(tm)
seriously, are they ever going to do anything with the sealand money? maybe they could buy a decent search engine. - capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10nine doesn't have any R's, therefore that figure is impossible. Much more likely to be Fourrrr million gooolden spanyarrrrd doubloons. The guy who told me had an eyepatch, and therefor much more reliable.
- Anrkist, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13It was awesome, much like TPB you could find files with spyware and viruses! Guess who profits off those files? Of course, these sites are for people who are new to pirating and have not been able to get into more "private" areas... it's somewhat like the Kazaa of BitTorrent.
- ismith, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9It was sex. Seriously, every completed download gave you orgasm. Any torrent you wanted, it was there.
- Clark3934, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Did you just post your email on digg?
Well, it could be worse... at least you didn't post it on 4chan. - Onetrack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5usenet.
full stop. - gambit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I agree but back in the day suprnova was a torrent indexer, not a tracker.
- ismith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I loved SuprNova, but I'm scared to use BitTorrent now since the other day I got a letter from Comcast about me downloading some copyrighted files. Until I find something to encrypt all of my packets, in and outgoing, I'll be limiting my downloads. I was downloading from TPB...
- steal_apps01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3here's a list of good torrent search places;
btjunkie.org
mininova.org
isohunt.com (started filtering)
demonoid.com (registration required)
torrentz.com (search of multiple sites)
The Pirate Bay, is not very good, the search is poor. SuprNova was really the first, torrent search site that was successful and well known, but compaired to sites now, it wasn't amazing. - Vanderdecken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Glad it doesn't have a new tracker for everyone to go gooey over and the die. Just a pure, focused indexer... TPB are the only ones that could do this, despite their own search engine sucking to high heaven. Most of their interface in fact.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2what your forgetting is bit torrent is so resilient that most torrents dont even need trackers, DHT takes care of it, ive downloaded 2+ GB files WITHOUT a tracker being online, 100% through DHT
- bobbothegrayson, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8was this not submitted yesterday? come on, people. atleast wait a week.
- Alphabet, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5no, it really is $9 million a year. I talked with a guy who works in one of pirate bay's division. He's a nice guy.
- gregulate, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5hell yes!
- gfnw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you want to go the elitist "I use private trackers OMFG!" route, let me point out that there is a world outside of bittorrent altogether. Where do you think the stuff comes from in the first place?
- Jerky1312, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2mininova.org is going to be the new suprnova.
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've always been partial to ISOhunt, but I didn't get into torrents until the tail end of Suprnova's lifespan
- jbentley77, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If they where to use a service such as TorrentSpam, their DB's would be much more cleaner. Check it out www.torrentspam.com
- FatherG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yes...draw more attention away from the lesser-known sites. I'd have to go back to *gasp* watching regular TV if TVTorrents went down, DVDClub too.
....oops - xShad0w, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Basically the greatest indexer EVERRRRR, every torrent with good amounts of seeds and speed, GAWD THIS IS AWESOME
- jsaul, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it's great to see them re-birth the site and let them know that the Internet is not easily policed, but WHY couldn't the writer, Nate Anderson, suppress the need to blame the Bush administration for this too? Does anyone really thing that Bush even knows what a torrent is?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, well, they guy I know has an eyepatch, a pegleg, a parrot, and a bad case of scurvy.
- MacMan88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1ftp.
- tobikow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I hope the site is going to have the same look and feel of the old suprnova. I might have a hard time switching back after three years, though. I wonder if its going to be bigger than it was before.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't use either. If I want a newish/popular file I go to scrapetorrent and generally go on mininova. If it's old then nothing can beat Isohunt.
- DaleoftheUK, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Don't you realise by downloading torrents your funding terrorism! This site is like 9/11 x1000.
/sarcasm (and team America reference) - spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yes it does not have non-music?
Wow, that's not un-confusing - Nerfdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1wow, what a great deal. an invite to a site that has open registration once a month in exchange for an invite to one of the most elitist sites out there.
just kidding, let me see if i have any TL invites left :D - DarkIIIusion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Lol dude.. You'll probably be receiving unholy things along with your invitation...
- nicknottaken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+150% of all torrents? Feel free to post up some backing to that claim.TBP have 651.636 registered torrents. That would make 1.303,272 torrents total worldwide. Sounds rather conservative to me.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -2/+3I don't think Anrkist was referring to private BitTorrent sites. There are other 'real' private means of obtaining warez.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3yes
- robszol, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3what about scrapetorrent.com!? That is a good site.
- fLUx1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OK, why do I get the feeling most Digg users use puplic sites like Demonoid (ok, its not 100% public, but it may as well be) & pirate bay?
You should know, theirs a world outside of those sites, and they are the last place I would visit if I needed something....so slow for a start.... - iXam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Other sites within TPB netrange :
http://dnsdigger.com/hostcollision/?host=www.SuprNova.org&net=on&mask=24 - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1okay, so what's your ratio? i smell *****, and it smells like Blah_Blah_Blah all the way.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pff... DC(++) ftw :P
- esbern1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1hahaa +puretna too man
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1How could you believe a pirate? Or even worse, how could you believe that they were going to buy it?
- aserer511, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1can't wait to pick up some illiict movies!
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Scrapetorrent is good before you click on one of the links. My God, most of the torrent sites it indexes are just freaking awful.
- Schmich, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0yep it's good for unique things but torrents are way better for anything that's new. Use both depending on what you want ;)
