- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+93By that logic, OS X already won in April of last year. :) If you use OS X Tiger, you pretty much already have all of Vista's "new" end-user features. Windows Vista is a catch-up release. Hardware-composited vector graphics and built-in metadata search are old to me now and nothing exciting. I kind of smile when I see excited Vista beta reviews talking about these kinds of features. When Vista comes out and finally reaches that level, OS X Leopard will be coming out, already building off that and going to the next level.
And gotta love the Aqua graphics in Vista. :) - Kazbaeden, on 10/12/2007, -10/+59RTFA. It says computer manufacturers wanted it pushed back for testing.
- VenDrake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52Insert "Duke Nukem: Forever" joke here.
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -22/+69They must be having major issues with it if they keep pushing it back. Doesn't fill you with confidence does it?
- dduardo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45Here is the official Microsoft Press Release:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/mar06/03-21WindowsVistaDeliveryPR.mspx - Godric, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45Damn, that's disappointing. I need to replace my PC and I was going to wait until Vista comes out. At this rate, I just may just leave it to who crosses the finish line first... OS X 10.5 or Vista.
- btipling, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44I know what happened. After taking a look at Ubuntu's Dapper Drake's alpha, Microsoft has decided it better improve Vista a bit more.
- sniper6121, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35LOL yesterday Ballmer was on CNBC and said there was no delay why would he lie...?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -30/+63Great, maybe PC makers will have time to meet all the crazy RAM and memory requirements needed to run Vista smoothly.
- undauntedspirit, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39How does a computer slow down fast? (Not flaming, generally curious)
- jollyllama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Also today, Gates promised new versions of IE at least once per year. You're telling me that a company the size of Microsoft can't put out updates to a simple, third-rate web browser more often than that?
The iPod box video was more than just a joke about aesthetics, folks. Microsoft is a labyrinth of middle management, focus groups, and marketing. Technology companies thrive by being organically structured, quickly adaptable, and innovative. Vista will come out, eventually, and it will be fine. But Microsoft is just coasting on momentum, and that can't last for long. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35I predicted this over 12 months ago. Vista was always going to be delayed to early 2007. It was simply not going to happen in Microsoft's fantasy timeframe. All these 1.0 APIs and internal reorganizations of Windows (while retaining compatibility) on top of the same ol' Win32 we know and love means this thing needs a ton of testing. Though Microsoft will use phrases like "on track" to make you think it hasn't been delayed again, it has.
The reason is obviously for testing. Feature-complete was just recently reached, and to expect Windows Vista to be ready in the next seven to eight months is insane, especially with the huge amount of bloated process that goes on in the Microsoft organization (mucho fat-trimming needed over there).
As someone pointed out, this gives OS X Leopard even more time to leapfrog Vista. I say leapfrog since sources have stated Steve Jobs is throwing every feature into OS X Leopard specifically to "leapfrog" Vista. If anyone saw the recent patents for the Finder, they know the big things coming. - ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Do you know something about Vista's sexuality that we don't?!
- rjcarr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31WTF is your mom doing that requires a computer newer than 3 years old? My mom has my computer from almost 10 years ago (P2 266) and she never complains. Is your mom a hacker or a gamer or something?
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33"A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever." - Shigeru Miyamoto
Vista is not a game but this still applies. - ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30At this pace, Mac OS X Lynx, Ocelot, and Cougar will be out!
In fact, at this pace, the entire species of felidae will have mutated into a super intelligent cat family which will become the dominant lifeform on earth in the year 2703. - vinny, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36"When Apple starts releasing on intel they will find out the resistence that the OS needs to alien hardware"
Apple is already releasing on Intel. Where have you been? - p0intblank, on 10/12/2007, -11/+34Once again, Apple will own the spotlight with "Leopard." =D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+38Looks like they need more time to integrate all that yummy DRM into the OS.
- btipling, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27I love how they word that press release to make it sound like it isn't a delay. Oh no, actually I hate it. :(
- mexter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Who is tim, and why does he deserve to be bombarded by an OS?
- mexter, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Just on time for the Vaporware awards!
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26"It didn't say anything about computer manufacturers asking for the extra time, it said Microsoft claimed that is the reason they pushed it back."
"Microsoft was confronted by quality issues that caused the release to be pushed back "a few weeks". This prompted manufacturers to ask the software vendor to delay the consumer to 2007 because they had insufficient time to test and prepare their systems for availability this calendar year."
You can learn a lot by reading the article. - kraakmark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19they had DOS in 1969?, wow thats old
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17You guys have it all mixed up!
Tom Cruise is coming out in November
Vista is coming out in '07.
;) - defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29Oh yeahhh, leopard. I almost forgot.
Well, it looks like Apple has got 2006 by the neck with Vista out of the way.
I am also dissapointed by this decision. My mom has had her old HO Pavilion for almost 3 years now and it's slowing down fast and can't keep up with her work. I just keep telling her to wait for November to get a new one with Vista, but it looks like she is gonna have to stick with XP; she can't hang on to her current PC any longer.
Or I could get her an Intel Mac with XP. :D - kwelling12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Well I'm thoroughly unsurprised.
/Expects Mac OS 11 before Vista - MediaShipper, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Hasn't Vista(Longhorn) been delayed for 5 years now?
I know they changed ALOT of stuff, but wow - Hackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Why does it not surprise me that Apple has put out a new major release every 1-2 years, improving much more in every iteration than Windows ever has at much longer intervals (almost 6 years now)?
At this rate, I could graduate high school before Bill Gates pulls his ***** together... looking forward to buying Leopard the day it comes out. :) - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18rjcarr - I don't know about defect's mother, but mine is self-employed in multimedia, and spends hours every day creating videos. Not all moms can make do with a P2.
- wernst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14And Ubuntu is delayed a few weeks and people lose their freaking minds. Geesh.
- ptoast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Um. Why? Wouldn't that get them a sale?
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Does anyone really think even that version will be out then? I don't.
- mr_cheese28, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I guess that means that Halo 2 on the PC is delayed as well.
- seanm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Wow... They cut out a bunch of features to get it released on time and then they still delay it? Meh.
- DougPenn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18New Ubuntu Linux coming in June. Better alternative? Of course!
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=147646 - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Nice article to read from the luxury of my core duo powered OSX.
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Canonical said there would be a new release of Ubuntu every six months. That's why the Dapper delay was notable.
People shouldn't flip out over it, but it did deviate from one of the major goals of Ubuntu to delay it. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Just go with OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
You'll have all the "ooh aah" Vista features without the bloat.
No digg. - fifrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Corporate edition will be out in November, that means millions of consumers will "acquire" Vista before 2007.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13
NOW, we know the secret to the 10X better game peformance....
Just WAIT to release it until the graphics cards are all 10X better. - bbeahm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9he he ha ha!!!!
Now windows users have to wait longer for Tiger, errr um Longhorn... no wait Vista. yeah, thats the one.(its like a fairy tale, i always hear stories but never see anything to back it up)
Also it occured to me that XP was introduced in 2001. 2007 is 6 years between upgrades. Thats an eternity in computers.
Bill, you silly billionaire - joe0891, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12For all those saying Vista was expected to be released sometime around 2004, or 2005, remember when it was Longhorn, it was supposed to be a stepping stone between XP and Vienna, then MS saw that it was assimilating into Vienna basically. So they basically restarted development, causing it to take a lot longer than expected. This delay though, is fairly disappointing.
Paraphrasing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista - DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Maybe they are adding support for EFI.
- mabba18, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Don't forget some people on hear are only 12, which would mean that their moms are in their 30's and still working.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18"When Apple starts releasing on intel they will find out the resistence that the OS needs to alien hardware"
Uhmm.. going beyond the fact that Apple released on Intel a couple months ago already -- your comment is further flawed in that Apple is not releasing their OS for use on generic beige boxes, they will control the hardware just as they always have. - TheTSArt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I used to laugh when I heard stuff like this, but now it's just getting kind of pathetic. What a horrible mess that company must be in.
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The future looks bleak for Windows. No EFI support, no WinFS, and now we have no real idea when Vista will even be released (2003 was the original target year!) The beta is "feature complete," but none of the new features are strong enough to warrant the upgrade cost. Vista will be the next Windows ME.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Vista is never coming out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10>Consumer = 2007, Business = 2006
yeah because we all know that business are always the FIRST ones to jump to a new operating system before consumers test it out...
ROFL!
Thats the most transparent, bogus, thing I have ever seen. Totally disengenous.
>wasn't Vista originally scheduled for 2007-08?
2004/2005 actually.. is when Longhorn was ORIGINALLY supposed to come out.
