Come on, this is a news site... not 'Look what this n3wb JUST figured out....' - kp3469, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20what's ridiculous here is that file renaming was (and still is) *way* easier in DOS than in Windows. i still use batch files to do large renaming tasks. old school? yes. but it works.
- tkdan235, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25I like how Sonmiles gets modded down and Johndoe gets modded up even though they basically said the same thing.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22In all my years of using Windows, I've never known about this. I'm ashamed.
- gwax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18The problem is not that it's old, the problem is that it just doesn't work the way people expect/want it to. Proper multi-file renaming in Windows is something that I've wrestled with quite a bit and it requires an additional application. There are many such applications but what's built into Windows just isn't any good.
- megaton, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15*****, I've been using computers for the last 20 years and I didn't know about this handy tip! Had me a whole slew of neat Lua scripts to do this sort of thing for me and didn't even need them...
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10tkdan, the tsunami was science-related, or "sciency" as they say in the american educational system. *jazz-hands*
- tkdan235, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15btw... I find this more tech news related than a tsunami that never happened. (earlier this week on digg)
- code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17reported as inaccurate.
"you'd like them to have descriptive titles like VacationToParis1.jpg"
more like
"you'd like them to have descriptive titles like VacationToParis (1) .jpg"
Also the first file in the selection stands out after the rename, without a number - Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9perhaps if you arent renaming all the files in that directory?
- jgtg32a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9you reported inaccurate over something that trivial?
- kofspades, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I don't understand how "vactation trip (1).jpg" is anymore descriptive than "IMG0040499.jpg" if it's in a directory called "vacation trip".
- EvoMR05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6To be honest, I've known this for a while, but this truely is not a great renaming scheme. I never name my consecutive files like that (#). But this do come handy when you want a quick fix on something. Also let me tell you, if you have 500 files you want to rename, it is SLOOOOOW~~!! :)
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Stupid. This is supposed to be news?! Come on.(1)

Sorry I was trying to rename your comment...
Ric Romero, meet your match!? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This doesnt work unless you have extensions hidden, if all your files have .jpg it places the number after the extension and the system will not properly recognize it.
- MegaSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Exactly. That is why I used this feature once, then undid my changes. I wish it was more option driven and you could choose your seperators.
- Talus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I still use the DOS rename command...MUCH better.
Best used with the 'Command Prompt Here' powertoy.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Simply right-click your folder, and select 'Command Prompt Here'.
Then type "rename *.img *.jpg" and hit enter (or whatever file extensions you want).
Done. - code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5nice small tools at af5, pity he does not have time to give his files decent names (af1???.exe, af2???.exe.....)
- jakeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think you're overestimating the *average* Digg user...
- mjaleo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Are you kidding me? You've been able to do this since atleast 2000, maybe 98SE.
Hell I know you've been able to do it in DOS for years.
Maybe next he'll share the mysterious unknown keystrokes of CTRL+C, CTRL+V! Oooooooh! - code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah, I thought this would be something new and it wasted my time, So I thought I'll waste some more...and more.
- TheTap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3G6 Utilities (previously called G6 Renamer) is freeware and the best bulk renamer I've found. I've used it for 5 or 6 years.
http://www.gene6.com/
You can set the prefix, keep old name as postfix, etc... - GreenLantern33, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Don't listen to these nay-sayers. I like this tip. Thanks!
- darley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4problem is you can't name them 001, since Windows will auto append another (1) to them.
Not a very good way, just a quick cut. - Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2please bury this article asap. it's a shame that it's on the front page.
- oferrer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ohmar: Yes you can use automator to do things like this with finder actions, only better. There are also many more things you can do with automator workflows other than renaming files.
- swong7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is there a way to use this method, but using a different number as the starting point?
- Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perl works in Windows just fine btw, so you probably should have said 'a version for cmd line using Perl'.
- lolwtfhaha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Agreed, camera files are dumb. I can't wait for those camera that let you organize your shots into rolls, just by talking to the camera :"camera, new roll: at the beach" and then after each shot you could, again, just say "timmy building a sand castle", or "look at lisa swimming!". Of course the names of the files wouldn't matter, they'd be grouped and commented (via exif data). OK, I'll stop dreaming....
- ScottDaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep, I was just going to post this link. RenameFiles is the app of choice for me for well over 2 years. It allows you to output a massive amount of files exactly as you want them. I hate the parathesis too.
- Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I made a comment there about that. This article blows donkey nuts and Total Cmd pwnz it in the butt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Me too, I feel so dumb now.
- somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm fairly sure that more Digg users use Windows than Mac or Linux. Maybe a Windows section would be useful?
[/off-topic] - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bracket number end bracket? Eww... no thanks. Brackets really have no place in a file name...
- Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Whenever I see a *(?).* in a file I always assume i have a duplicate file and delete it. This renaming scheme is horrible, especially when the photo transfer wizard will rename them impeccably.
- artofwar420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is farking awesome
- DapperScoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a useful tip for some people. However, the target audience probably isn't the average Digg user, considering he also gives explicit instructions on how to select multiple files using Ctrl-click.
- vikingcoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Total Commander [ http://ghisler.com/ ]
Provides a very powerful multi-rename tool, including a counter.
It also treats FTP connections identically like drives and archive (ZIP, RAR, etc...) files like directories. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Plus, as far as I know, you still can't change attributes on specific files nested in different folders in Windows, only from a command prompt. DOS still beats Windows in some cases.
- lordTalus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't know about this...always used batch files. I'll probably still use batch files...because I'm a slut.
- jakeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh, nevermind.
- Sentinel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk
- maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1XNVIEW is the tool I use. It has great batch commands for editing photos:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/pierre.g/xnview/enhome.html - jonom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Total Commander rocks...been using it for years. It's the best Norton Commander clone to come along in a while.
Too bad M$ bullied them into changing the name from Windows Commander. - isasusinfinite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lagged2Death: Is it a feature if no one uses it?
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the Only one who didn't know this?
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great tip, most people don't know it, I didn't anyway. It makes sense when you think about it, what happens when you copy a file with the same name to your desktop? It names it with a (1).
Brillian! - Lagged2Death, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It was new to me, and I've been using PCs for a loooong time.
There are a lot of features in Windows which fit this pattern. They're obscure only because they're cleverly hidden, they do something useful that many people need badly, and they're so clunky and half-assed that you wonder why MS even bothered. Bah. - vegasbright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, I think ill post a story on how to change your background and see if it gets to the front page. Digg is getting more and more suspect every day.
