- Anrkist, on 10/11/2007, -54/+421Well he is a Mac user.. knowing the basics of how a system works is not really required.

GUYS WAKE UP (Yep I'm yelling)
This guys are just making modifications to the UI! It's like patching the uxtheme.dll in Windows XP and applying an unsigned theme. They are not bringing Longhorn back.
And for those who think Longhorn was a tottaly different OS made by MSFT, Longhorn was Vista's codename! Wake up people!
These guys don't have any source code nor are they going to fix anything. This isn't better than Vista, not even XP! It's Longhorn build 4074 (possibly 4093) released at WinHEC 2004, and that was 3 years ago!
Don't install it on your machine unless you know what you are doing! It is an alpha build with homebrew code in it, so it isn't too stable!
/Information - max420, on 10/11/2007, -14/+205Uhm, the drivers aren't ALL installed..... what are you stupid? It stores them on the DVD, and installs ONLY the ones it needs.
- KevinJB, on 10/11/2007, -11/+181Because you a) made a highly unlikely claim and b) failed to provide any evidence to back it up.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -34/+200Vista ships with over 19,500 (Compared with 10,000 for XP) on the DVD and over 11,700 (Compared with 2000 for XP) on Windows Update. Also, it's amusing how people have all these printer, video card, wifi, etc driver problems on another OS. /rolls eyes
So, on Vista there's what, some problems with Creative and a couple of other manufacturers due to them being lazy ? Go find a clue. - gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -4/+93"Be careful, this is likely not legal."
it isn't at all. - motheroats, on 10/11/2007, -8/+93Its 800.00 mb. It took me 3 hrs. Havent tried it out yet.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+81Since when did Microsoft drop developing Longhorn
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/beta/lhs/default.mspx
Its still under development and is planed to be released as Longhorn Server 2008
Go ahead and use your 3 year old beta lol. All they did was change the skin and whack a few "reloaded" logos.. - Optimaximal, on 10/11/2007, -7/+80Tbh, Apple aren't innocent. OS X installs every print driver under the sun by default.
Ok, its just the same as manually copying the i386 directory in Windows, but filling up the users hdd by default with a load of unecessary fluff just for the sake of usability? - gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -4/+67"Since when did Microsoft drop developing Longhorn"
In August 2004, Jim Allchin reset the entire process. Everything was abandoned and they started Longhorn *again* but this time, they based it off of the Server 2003 codebase.
So yes, they did abandon Longhorn. They carried the codename, but the original vision of the OS was dropped. - jron, on 10/11/2007, -3/+65This is stupid... these retards have no way to patch anything, including security holes; all they are doing is changing the UI.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -7/+67Taking up all the RAM is one of Vista's best features. It preloads executable data so that it can launch frequently used programs more quickly.
- aiten, on 10/11/2007, -7/+66I guess it's a project as good as any for a curious dev to take on, but it sounds like a waste of time to me. If you're clever enough to ressurect a dead, closed operating system, why not put your efforts into something worthwhile, like improving Linux.
Not to mention this project is almost certainly illegal and will be shut down by Microsoft the moment they get wind of it. - daftman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+59@gcnaddict
I'm sorry but I am trying pretty hard to find the similarity. Can you make it more specific for me as too which theme on your site they are stealing. I doubt that you are lying but I need your help in believing. - Seifey, on 10/11/2007, -5/+60I don't think theirs is covered in JPEG artifacts..
- AshevilleRaised, on 10/11/2007, -0/+53If there is ever any support for it, dont expect it to be from Microsoft.
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -5/+51Bad idea to try this folks. This is alpha software (longhorn build 4074 I believe). You all remember the bad reception beta 2 got? Well this is even worse.
- skyshard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+42easy. they didnt

one coder, a bunch of designers and assistants, and two testers. what we're seeing here is a retheme, maybe resource replacements, but no real rewrite - Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -12/+54You want something that's a hundred times faster than your hard drive just sitting empty? Well, if you like a slow computer, go for it.
- tippmann1, on 10/11/2007, -4/+44I think you mean http://www.mininova.org/tor/720761 (you added a period at the end of the url)
- pyrotoad, on 10/11/2007, -7/+47Is anyone else confused about how a team can start a project based on a closed-source operating system? Do they somehow have source code?
- dawgma, on 10/11/2007, -5/+44I wonder if the graphics engine is similar to what we saw in the concept video (staring at 1:10):

Just downloaded this torrent and Avast listed a Trojan in the ISO:
LHR_M1_FRE_EN_SE.ISOI386DRIVER.CABsffp_srm.sys
Malware name: Win32:HacDef-FT [Trj] - bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -4/+40I read the article too.
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -11/+46@finnishgeek, I only did glass skins. In 4074, glass skins were in the msstyles file whereas the rest of the skin (glass sidebar, etc.) were in the imageres.dll file in system32. If you look inside the rar file in one of my earlier links and bust open the msstyles file, youll see what I mean.
Need any more? - Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -2/+36Wow, this is like Vista without the prospect of future support.
- lukas88, on 10/11/2007, -3/+36Sorry gcnaddict, I think most people were assuming that longhorn meant to have that skin all along. It sounded very much like "microsoft copied me!" Now it appears that the group that released the longhorn "reloaded" used your version of the skin. Is that correct?
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36I don't know why people are digging gncaddict down. I find what he said true. Even the website that release this version of longhorn already apologized to him.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -14/+45I can't believe the blatant fanboyism of Ubuntu users, great you use Ubuntu, go advertise that fact somewhere else.
It's not that I'm even a Microsoft user, because I'm not, I use Arch Linux. But honestly, is it neccesary for a bunch of Ubuntu kiddies to come into this comment section bashing something for really no reason whatsoever, and advertising Ubuntu?
You don't see me going around saying "ZOMG MS = Teh sux, ArchLinux FTW". - windwaker, on 10/11/2007, -10/+40oh *****, serious warez itt
- cam18, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33Windows Server 2008 is Windows Server Longhorn
Vista was Longhorn
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Server_%22Longhorn%22
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista - Ghostsfp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31I agree with N0yds 100%. Ububntu Fanboys, or Linux fanboys in general piss me off. I am in fact a linux user, and I love it, but damn, I don't go around telling people to switch to ubuntu. I constantly see people with issues with Windows, and there is always some jackass who shows up and says "Switch to linux". They didn't ask whether or not they should switch to linux, they needed help with a problem.
This is like Christians trying to convert everyone else to their religion, when the other people are perfectly happy with their own beliefs. And speaking of which, most linux fanboys I know have the audacity to talk trash about Christians trying to convert people, Which I find absolutely absurd. - mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31no. That would be idiotic.
- FortyCaliber, on 10/11/2007, -13/+42I'm downloading it now. I'll get it running in VirtualBox and see how it is. If nothing else, it'll be nice to show someone:
"hey, check this out."
"What is it?"
"Longhorn befroe they scrapped it."
"Cool. Looks like Vista."
"Sort of."
"You're a nerd."
"I know. Wanna get a beer?"
"Sure." - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -11/+39Actually Microsoft has already stated that XP support will outlive Vista.
Vista Home and Ultimate version will have support till 2012 (Just 5 years). Vista Business and Enterprise will be supported for the usual "5+5" till 2017.
XP is to be supported till 2014. - gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32"Now it appears that the group that released the longhorn "reloaded" used your version of the skin. Is that correct?"
Yes. I made the skin based on what I saw from the 2004 Longhorn Keynote prior to the skin ever being embedded into the mainstream Vista builds. - wisam, on 10/11/2007, -8/+35sorry comment abuse, but here's the Longhorn Reloaded website
http://longhorn-reloaded.org/
And here's the forum thread where it all started
http://www.joejoe.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=2094 - Escamillo, on 10/11/2007, -13/+39jdoc,
I like how you couldn't address any of the points Rafael made, so you attack him personally instead.
And some idiots modded you up, too. That's an embarrassment for Digg. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25That would be a root beer wouldn't it? ;-)
- Rafael, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23No. Let's see... modification of copyrighted content, redistribution of modified copyrighted content, etc.
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24You have too high expectations. Better rephrase that to "I wonder if XP or Vista drivers will work properly".
The driver model is something inbetween, neither of any of those. - warlord, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Am curious to see how different the two operating systems are and if they made a good choice in restarting the project from scratch
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24"Fantastic, another MS OS without driver support. :P"
Yeah, first Windows 3.1 and now this. When will it end? Well, I suppose there was XP64. And Vista64. Okay, your comment is valid.
Anyway, do yourself a favour and check out this long lost MS OS using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. It's a free virtual machine like VMware so you can emulate the whole OS and hardware without compromising your currently installed OS. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx - Rafael, on 10/11/2007, -9/+29jdoc,
Just following proper trademark guidelines put out by Microsoft.
http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/intellectualproperty/trademarks/usage/general.mspx - knomevol, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23probably right. next week we'll be digging the letters all these downloaders received in the mail from MS legal.
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21they probably do not have the source code and if they do they are gonna get taken to the cleaners for having it.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Uh, XP was Whistler. 2000 was Cairo. 95 was Chicago. Vista was Longhorn, but they adopted that term for the kernel instead of the OS.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20I donate all my diggs to Firehed. He stated the point more strikingly than I did.
