"Microsoft is copying this, M$ is copying that, I ***** suck penis and have my head in my boyfriends *****... loook attt meee whhhhoooorrrreee for l337 linux lololol."
Seriously. Did ANYONE look at the new stuff, in the ideas.live section, that MS is developing? Online Virus Scan for free, New MSN Messenger, New Mail Beta signup, new cool stuff. This is a collaboration of Start.com and sandbox.msn.com.
So just please die all of you fat, gay, annoying fanboys. - FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anybody notice the note at the top of the page?
"Firefox support is coming soon. Please be patient :-)"
Just thought it was interesting. - Hexxagonal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually for those of you who are talking about how it's a ripoff of google's start page. Look back at the start.com post that made it to the front page, you'll soon realize that google is a ripoff of start.com.
I wish I could undigg comments. - tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Firefox support is coming soon. Please be patient :-)"
Is that real????? you sure its Microsoft?!?!?!?! - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very similar to the start.com site, although live.com doesn't seem to work as well.
Personally, I like the concept a lot. MSN was never very appealing to me and was made to compete with AOL's target audience. Thats fine but it cluttered up their web services with so much crap that they just became a pain to use if you didn't want to be bombarded with a blinking, flashing and slow interface. Separating them out like they are doing seems like a smart way to keep the existing users while also providing a fast and effecient version of those services. Plus it should allow those services to be built and expanded on.
We'll have to see how well they can pull everything together - and how long it takes them. The site was obviously thrown together very fast though and looks a bit desparate. Maybe thats not a bad thing though. Whether you like MS or not, its definitely good to see them paranoid and hustling again :) - Presentlight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks like a rip off of the Google personalization...which was a rip off of portals. I hate to bring things back to Google, but they made the portal actually worth it.
- DJS2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Meh , I thought the google page was cool but I stop using it after one week.
For me bookmarks work just fine. - NickelSax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MS press release on Windows Live and Office Live can be found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/nov05/11-01PreviewSoftwareBasedPR.mspx
for those seeking information about Windows Live and what it is/will be according to Microsoft, rather than just looking at the Live site which can only show what it currently is...
Also check out the start.com blog at:
http://spaces.msn.com/members/startcom/PersonalSpace.aspx
and the live.com blog at:
http://spaces.msn.com/members/livecom/ - kingyubba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2BLATANT rip... nice that they acknowledge Firefox...
at least they're ripping a design that's minimal. - groupofone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, for those of you that would actually use this type of portal (personalized, RSS Feeds, etc.), what /is/ the 'perfect' portal for you?
Is there something missing from the existing portals that you'd like to see? What about UI preferences? I prefer NetVibes myself, but I see some small advantages for each of the platforms, yet none are the end-game in portals, by far. I certainly like this approach over your traditional portal, however (Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, Netscape, etc.)
Today, we have at least four AJAX portals:
NetVibes - http://www.netvibes.com
Google - http://www.google.com/ig
Start.com/Live.com - http://start.com or http://live.com
ProtoPage - http://www.protopage.com
Others such as goowy.com don't really fit the same open standards mould, but are out there as an alternative. Unproven, out-of-the-box AJAX dev platforms such as Backbase (http://www.backbase.com) might get you up and running if you wanted to do one on your own time. - debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bonus points for the nice mixed gradient of the Windows logo colors used at the right edge of the search box, sexy.
- TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At least they mentioned firefox :)
- ArtVandelay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's like 'start.com' was so good that they had to up and do it again with a different domain name.
- Hollywood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now with 50% more gradients and 100% Firefox free.
- ashanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Online Virus Scan for Free" ... ideas.live?
So how's that work, they use a nasty Active X and IE-only script to index through your entire hard drive? That's cool. Umm.. no wait. I don't need a virus scanner let alone an "online based" one. - philhansen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Ahem...netvibes.com, best portal page EVER!"
It's definitely the best one I've used so far. Has been getting regular updates of new features and looks the best to boot (my opinion of course). - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahem...netvibes.com, best portal page EVER! It's really nice once you get it all customized. I switched from google.com/ig about 2 weeks ago and don't regret it at all.
- link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uhhhh
- staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0check out this slide Bill presented:

No digg for live.com. - defylogik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i couldnt live without my google personal, thats how i get all my tech feeds! everytime the browser opens! go google.
google should run our government, - nato4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not news... start.com was where it all started... :-/
- moldor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just plain wrong on so many levels.....
- ChachiAZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Couldn't I do this already w/ MyExcite home page like 9 years ago?
- monkeymagik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it looks pretty darn good. If it could display digg rss feeds and work in firefox it'd be a winner. The drag and drop aspect of adding feeds is alot better than any of the other portal sites mentioned.
It obviously IS a next version of start.com and of course they've copied other sites that have done the same thing. If no one did that we'd have one brand of car, one brand of CPU, one brand of graphics card, one brand of toothpaste... you get the picture. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RSS feed search sucks the big one. searched for "boing boing" and it managed to turn up a dozen TOTALLY UNRELATED feeds.
- resentment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.techcrunch.com/2005/11/01/windows-live-more-than-an-ajax-desktop/
- Twee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is a difference between Windows Live and start.com
Windows Live is similar to start, however it also has features similar to watch Apple offers with their .Mac subscription service, which started years ago as the free "iTools". Features such as online disk storage, security (anti-virus?) enhancements, and web bookmark favorites. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't like an official Microsoft thing is it?
Firefox Users
Firefox support is coming soon. Please be patient :-)
I mean would Microsoft really say that? Wouldn't they say Firefox users get IE or get out. - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lame - I get a frikkin blank white page in Safari. Pffffft
No digg - scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks interesting.. except for a combo of netvibes (just went to that wow its awesome) the google desktop side bar and konfabulator (www.konfabulator.com the original widgets program.. well 2nd one.. but before apples!) are a much better solution.. the gadgets look underwhelming and no firefox support? come on.. thats retarded! can't they do anything without making it incompatible?
- navinjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet Microsoft thinks if they keep this in "beta" they can be just like Google.
- EddieC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL THIS SUCKS
- stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cant seem to add the digg RSS feed. Thats a bummer. The digg RSS feed never worked with start.com either. Anyone else having issues as well?
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To answer some of peoples questions about how this is different than start.com I'd like to point a few things out:
First, this is a branding thing. It would seem microsoft is planning a "live" product suite that includes messenger, email, etc.
Second, there is more to this than at first meets the eye. It would appear that vista (and/or IE7) will be adding some functionality that this will take advantage of (such as live favorites).
To get more info on this stuff check:
http://ideas.live.com/ - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stop bragging about the firefox support, its no surprise because start.com had firefox support and it is based off of that foundation.
- Carbito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like it has the potential to be a good site. I have been using start.com as my homepage for ages, I will definatly be switching over to live.com as soon as Firefox support is available.
Its amazing everything that a team of just three Microsoft people can do. - aegreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good grief, some of thses comments are ridiculous. I'm beginning to expect that from Digg users now, sadly enough...
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad they're gonna add firefox support. But i'm sticking to google reader.
- wireplay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Firefox support is coming soon. Please be patient :-)"
Amateur - matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I prefer google.
The msn version looks silly and dont wory properly in firefox - damonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In Safari it only displays the search box and logo. Nothing else.
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will just stick with Googles page
- J3bu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is this I spy? Open the site in firefox and you get presented with a little note at the top which states
"Firefox support is coming soon. Please be patient :-)"
A smiley face, on an official mircosoft site, I wonder if Gates knows/would be happy about this. After all it isn't a professional image that's giving off.....I know i'm nitpicking but you know! - Flyngwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Oh, and Microsoft seems to be slowly letting firefox win. Good for them. I don't think we can hope Vista ships with it, though.
Maybe the OS after Vista will have Mozilla as part of explorer, instead of IE8."
No way, no how.
"Google an "evil empire"? How so...? sure they are dominate, but Google is free!!!! How is that evil?"
They're worth $100 Billion, free or not. Plenty of room for evil. (They're still the greatest thought). - ajcomet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meh, its a steaming pile. no Digg
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hehe I like that firefox note.
- damonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is fake. Some dude named Jack Spurr in Nova Scotia owns www.live.com.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that's pretty cool. Stop whining so much about Firefox not being supported. This is BETA. Whenever there's anything wrong with a beta product from an open source group or Google or what have you, it's fine. Why is Microsoft so different? Irrational hatred, that's why. Anyway, they do support their own browser already, which makes sense and they say that they're going to support Firefox soon. Quit bitching and moaning just because it's Microsoft. Geez.
- Leftyshields, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks jacked up in Firefox.
