- sin2051, on 10/10/2007, -1/+116And yet another example of why DRM in all forms only hurts the honest consumers instead of those who pirate Windows and bypass WGA in the first place. Wonderful!
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+102See, now we find the real "advantage" to Genuine Advantage. The advantage is MS can turn off your machine remotely.
- nogami, on 10/10/2007, -1/+58Ah, once again, it's the legit customers that are being inconvenienced... Much like the recent Bioshock fiasco, the only people that have problems are the paying customers. The "non-paying non-customers" have already patched their systems to avoid this sort of issue.
Isn't it great to be honest? - k3nt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+53"do not reboot a Windows machine that has been marked as non-genuine. Once you do so, you will lose functionality and the Aero interface."
I know I'm always pissed when Ubuntu fails to authenticate and Beryl stops working.
oh wait. - KernelPanic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+50I'm no expert, but the 28th is a Tuesday...
kp - Jambi, on 10/10/2007, -7/+51Well, seeing as you've been waiting for it, I'll oblige you. Windows Vista looks like crap and runs like molasses. Windows XP is too insecure. Go use Linux instead. Or buy a Mac. Happy now?
- troyallen069, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38It's funny that the top company with billions that develops Microsoft Windows can't get their own ***** together
- AManOfLOP33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35So we can pirate Windows now and nothing bad is gonna happen? What an uproar...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+43Marketing people are not good at fixing servers/code issues. This might take a while. Maybe Microsoft should call GeekSquad?
- Wilddigi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37Microsoft sucks
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33Where are all the MicroSoft apologists who came out of the woodwork when we (the smart ones who could see this coming) complained when WGA was forced down our throats? The ones who all said, "If you have a legal copy, Pirate, you'll never have a problem, Pirate. All it takes is a phone call at worst, Pirate. Why is that too much trouble for you, Pirate?"
Well, guys: How does it feel to be a MicroSoft-certified Pirate? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31They can't login to their computers right now.
- lazyfisherman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31Being dependent on WGA, DRM and other activation/policing schemes puts you at a genuine disadvantage.
- zoom1928, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29> MACHINES ARE NOT SHUTTING DOWN
True, but you are making a public accusation that your business partners are thieves. Think of all of us that buy your software to install on customer's computers or sell it retail that are now being called thieves by your support people. Why not tell the truth over the phone to your customers instead of calling your business partners thieves? One of our customers, after believing we were trying to rip them off with fake keys, had a new copy he bought from Fry's do the same. Microsoft support accused Fry's of selling pirated software.
What kind of business moron decided it was a good idea to hurt the people who sell your software? How many retail shops will decide it just isn't worth the legal liability to sell software from people that will later try to turn their on customers on them. Ever heard the term don't bite the hand that feeds you? - Phoenixfury, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29Who would have thought Halo 2 would cause me such misery. I bought the game today only to find the sound doesn't work. So I go to the support page to see if there is a patch that might fix it. Well no mention of a patch, but MS suggests trying to update to direct X 10. I thought I already had direct X 10, so I thought I'd try that anyway. Well I go for it only to be greeted by the WGA check which refuses to authenticate my copy of Vista. Worse yet my copy of Vista got dummed down.. Aero went bye bye.. Thanks MS! I am booted onto my XP partition at the moment, but I need to know if my internet is dummed down too with that time limitation per day, or is that only if windows isn't activated? Vista is still activated on my machine, but the WGA check killed a few things, hopefully the internet isn't limited thanks to this.

"First things first, do not reboot a Windows machine that has been marked as non-genuine. Once you do so, you will lose functionality and the Aero interface. " - thinsoldier, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28NO... don't fix it! This is a good thing!
- crapmatic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24My small business almost adopted Adobe InDesign but we dumped the plan because of this kind of DRM. Basically if we had a couple of hard drive crashes and were unable to do the "deactivation" then all of our manuscripts would have been under an intellectual property ransom. ***** that. We went to older software. Market forces need to rise up with a vengeance and give this "activation" DRM ***** a serious beatdown.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Wow. That is ***** up.
- kris33, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26This is not THE reason to switch OS, it is ONE of many.
- bdhughes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20exactly right. how sick is that? the people who pay for the license are punished as thieves and liars by a company that 'invented' lying and stealing software for profit.
Genuine Advantage? Yeah, is that like 'Happily Married'? Or 'Military Intelligence'? Or is it like Microsoft Works?
/oxymoron rant - breakflows, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Whenever I think of "Windows Genuine Advantage," I think of its icon and how it looks so much like one of those popped veins the Japanese use in Mangas to make the characters look angry.
- ThinkBox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18The real comedy here is when bill gates turns on this computer and finds out that he pirated his own OS
- amgat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18For every thing else, there's linux.
- Chordonblue, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Well, for .org schools like mine this is DISASTER. I have 130 students arriving tomorrow (Sunday). Fortunately, all my school computers run on a volume license, but if they've brought new ones...
- dwhs, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23I can't wait until we can get out the windows shadow. Linux needs to really step up quick!
- SniperSlap, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Windows is more maintained by lawyers than programmers.
This is just another reason why you shouldn't CARE if Windows has ***** like this in it or not. Switch to Mac or Linux. Pick an OS that doesn't try to fleece you and make you stupid.
Seriously. Do it already, the software is there all you have to do is help create the demand for change. - philippbock, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17I have:
Banana 6" (1" diameter)
1/2 lb
Yellow
Genuine Chiquita Sticker
It last cost me about 50p to upgrade to this spec.
Find me an Apple with similar/better specs and upgradeability for a similar price. - newbill123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16This message is substantially similar to the one Phil Liu posted on the MS forums (minus a few promises).
But its impact of being a dedicated attempt to fix the problem, asap! is somewhat blunted by the fact that Phil is posting on digg and that his followup comment on the MS forums is a reminder of the forum's language standards. Such actions suggest the "fix" being sought is a public relations spin. Why not wait until after the "fix" to moderate and delete people's objectionable posts on the MS forums? - scronide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Look at the article. Can you really argue that it isn't deserved?
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15..so what is the downside? :p
- windowsrookie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Monday, September 28th.
- sctwp09, on 10/10/2007, -9/+23***** you. I paid for your ***** and this happens! This would not happen on any other OS. Go ***** yourself Phil.
- ogre2112, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I find it so wonderful that my customers are calling wondering why they were sold counterfeit software.
SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE FIRED (Whole department, even better), and I want their last paycheck. - maineman99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13"However, the sense we get ... is that Microsoft is pretty much in the dark right now. " Truer words have never been spoken.
- Gee1004, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20Maybe Steve Jobs can lend them a Mac server in the meantime
- Skooma714, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16So in other words it becomes XP
- filefly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15That's enough, children...
- RIPtechtv, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Vista Paradox one click activator still working on this machine. Currently dulebooting with Ubuntu.
- digiguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14What's strange is that Bill Gates became an $80 billion dollar man "BEFORE" Microsoft implimented WGA. Windows NT and 98 didn't have this activation BS
- realityiswhere, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I used to work in the building where the WGA call centre is, for Microsoft, but another department. The agents handling these calls probably don't even know this is going on, and that's sad.
- PhilLiuMSFT, on 10/10/2007, -20/+32Folks, I guarantee that we're working on this issue right now. For folks wondering, MACHINES ARE NOT SHUTTING DOWN with reduced functionality.
I guarantee that I will personally resolve this issue before I go to sleep - whether or not it is Tuesday I sleep.
The message from the Supportability team will be addressed appropriately as well. I encourage folks to keep an eye out on my WGA Forums - http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=1004&SiteID=25
-Phil Liu @ Microsoft
Program Manager, WGA - crapmatic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Genine Advantage is as much of a genuine advantage as Right To Work is all about the right to work.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13More like "The WTF starts now!"
- Jambi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Actually, if you're referring to software, I'm not sure I agree with you. Microsoft got their billions due to some deft business maneuvering, some very questionable practices, and general business idiocy on the part of most of their competitors. Their software has never been too good, with a few exceptions. (Windows NT 4 comes to mind, but I'm not sure that it wasn't done in part by IBM...meh, I've forgotten)
- dtraneighty8, on 10/07/2008, -5/+16In the year 2017, August 28th will be a Monday.
- Gee1004, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14I digged you, but MAC is not an OS.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11If you can't see the difference between .Mac going down and Windows Genuine Advantage going down, then you really are an idiot.
- brownb2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Phil - get back to work and get off digg.
Your boss,
