- Coolone84, on 01/08/2009, -23/+164I think I've become cautiously optimistic about Windows 7. I'm still on XP, and see no point in going to Vista while this is on the horizon.
- LMN8R, on 01/09/2009, -21/+113Windows 7 is a very solid, very complete-feeling operating system. But I think the only reason why people think it's such a huge step up and so revolutionary is because they've bought into all the ***** FUD about how "terrible" Vista is.
In actuality, for people who use Vista today, and know that it's not nearly as bad as people say, know that it performs as fast (sometimes faster) in games than XP, and is overall a much more secure, stable, and capable OS than XP, the step to Windows 7 is far less significant.
Oh well - uninformed perceptions are what killed Vista's popularity. If the same uninformed perceptions are what make people think that Windows 7 is the best thing since sliced bread, and a far bigger step up from Vista than it actually is, so be it. I'll probably be happy using it either way, just like Vista. - roxgod666, on 01/09/2009, -3/+72Or you can try the beta...
- serif69, on 01/09/2009, -6/+65"Windows 7 is a solid, fast-performing, stable operating system"
There is something completely wrong with the marketplace for putting up with anything different. - reticulate, on 01/09/2009, -1/+53They certainly said it about 2000.
95 was lauded mostly because of the GUI improvements.
XP was actually pretty unpopular when it came out - lots of people dual booted 98 and XP for quite a while because the driver support for the NT environment wasn't up to scratch, especially for gaming. - MavRevMatt, on 01/09/2009, -6/+58But it's more fun to be a Windows-bashing douche...
- clemsontiger, on 01/09/2009, -8/+58I have been running build 7000 for about 3 weeks and it hasn't crashed once and have not had a single driver issue or compatibility issue. After testing Vista RC2, this is amazing for a beta build.
- cquinnd, on 01/08/2009, -0/+37You can tweak or disable UAC on Vista just as you will be able to on Win7. The difference is 7 will have a slider for the various options available.
- TheSabre, on 01/09/2009, -1/+31People are in love with XP *now*. Don't you remember when XP was ready to launch in 2001? Hardcore Windows 2000 and Windows 98SE users laughed at the thought of having a blue or silver task bar. XP was a joke when it first came out... everyone hated on it because it just introduced more eye candy and Windows 2000 was far superior as a business OS and 98SE did an excellent job as a home OS.
- MScrip, on 01/09/2009, -3/+32> "It's hard to believe"
Really? People are in love with XP. Clinging to it for life!
I guess XP achieved "good" status when Vista is perceived as "bad." - failtrain, on 01/09/2009, -4/+31Just because you use a mac. It does not mean you are clever.
- failtrain, on 01/09/2009, -12/+37I wonder if they will give me a free upgrade from Vista :-/
- LMN8R, on 01/09/2009, -2/+26You seem to be confusing a roll-up of current security fixes with a significant amount of work by thousands of engineers over many years.
If Windows 7 is a "service pack", then so is every single follow-up release of OS X. Alas, neither is remotely the case:

NO they didn't.. try tweaking some ***** before you flame... - Gizza, on 01/09/2009, -3/+21"There has also been a minor change to the Windows Shut Down button. Click an arrow to the button's right, and you get a list of shutdown options,"
Am I missing something here? Isn't this exactly how it works in Vista? - TheSabre, on 01/09/2009, -3/+18It's a beta build built off the progress of Vista. Try Vista SP1 and you'll find many of the same strengths that you cite in this beta.
- Walker2323, on 01/09/2009, -7/+21Yeah, but Vista is this generation's ME. Windows 7 will be the new XP.
- jeremymccurdy, on 01/09/2009, -3/+17Capitalizing Every Goddamn Word Makes You Look Like A Douchebag.
- CrikeyMike, on 01/08/2009, -9/+22I use XP for work and Vista at home and Vista is better on wireless connectivity and pretty smooth but UAC has to go and it is nothing to write home about on UI. I see Windows 7 as a much need makeover of Vista for usability and ease of use. For moms and dads out there the easier home networking and media sharing should be good. I really doubt it will be that much lighter weight, but we'll see.
- klitzbtc, on 01/08/2009, -45/+58"Windows 7 is a solid, fast-performing, stable operating system"
I refuse to believe any of that until I have the finished product running exactly as they say on my desktop. - Innovator9, on 01/09/2009, -3/+15When I saw your post under the viewing threshold, I braced myself for some serious Microsoft bashing. Why shouldn't you be allowed to feel that you deserve the upgrade?
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -1/+12I sometimes wonder if the people here who are bashing Vista have ever actually...used Vista. I bashed it for a while because it simply didn't work with some of the peripherals in my computer, yet I had never actually used it. I went off the assumption that XP was "just fine", even though it too had some problems at launch. After getting a new laptop that had Vista Home Premium on it, I have since changed my tune. After using Vista now to work/socialize, I'm perfectly happy with it and have no qualms.
Granted, I do prefer Linux, but that's entirely because of how customizable everything is, and the fact that since it has such a small customer base that so very few people program viruses for it. If Linux or OS X had the customer base Windows does, I can guarantee you that there would be just as many viruses. Just because Windows isn't perfect does not mean that the alternatives are. Whenever I want to game, I hop back on Vista. Having used all 3 major OSes, I can say that I personally think Vista is the best for your average, "I just want to chat and browse the interwebs" type computer user.
With Windows 7 on the horizon I can't blame anyone for choosing not to upgrade NOW, but the reality is that Vista simply got a bad rap. It's amazing how long first impressions can last. - Kazbaeden, on 01/09/2009, -1/+12Vista has many improvements over XP in wireless, most notably that wireless is natively supported rather than simulated as a wired connection. This allows for various wireless specific features to be implemented, such as
If you want to read up on how Vista changed wireless networking, see this wiki article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista_network ...
As for your negative experience, a wireless card is only as good as its drivers. I've had nothing but a positive experience, you've had a negative experience, we're both using the same OS, therefore your negative experience is due to something other than the OS. - chthonical, on 01/09/2009, -6/+17Running Windows 7 beta. Stable. No bugs yet past little things with Steam, which is a finicky program anyway.
- ShortyR19, on 01/09/2009, -0/+10Vista handles memory differently than XP.
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000688.h ... - meghalc, on 01/09/2009, -4/+13Whats the big deal on UAC? Stop complaining! It takes about 4 clicks to turn off UAC!!!
- failtrain, on 01/09/2009, -6/+15Grammar FAIL.
Just because you think you made a clever statement, it doesn't mean you actually did. - jmantra, on 01/09/2009, -12/+21The taskbar looks like KDE 3
- DigeratiPrime, on 01/09/2009, -2/+11Yeah I think the excitement over 7 is largely due to people who gave up on Vista too early. Using Vista now for 2 years and while I have been playing with 7 for a month on my HP Mini its not a big deal. I think MS knows this and is basically re-releasing Vista to some extent to get fresh reviews.
- stormbreaker, on 01/09/2009, -5/+14Same with me. I'm thoroughly impress with build 7000. It's the most stable of and beta I've ever used - I haven't had a single problem, be it program compatibility or general usage, at all. Much more than I can say for Vista, and all while using a fraction of the resources I normally do on Vista.
- ri59, on 01/09/2009, -2/+11That's funny as I've been running Vista for over a year and never had any of those issues either. Maybe I'm just lucky I haven't had the problems that others have mentioned.
- darwinwin, on 06/18/2009, -7/+15What the ***** is wrong with people ... always ***** comparing Windows with Linux or OSX... Just go ahead use whatever you want .. if you like it use it.. if you dont, dont use it .... I have used everything from Linux, Windows and OSX whenever I have had the need ... I like Windows but I dont bitch about any other OS because thats not Windows ....
Just get off your horses about the OS .... Just use the damn thing for what it is for .... - jhaks, on 01/09/2009, -0/+8It only currently upgrades from Vista SP1. It will clean install fine without Vista.
- failtrain, on 01/09/2009, -5/+13A very good question. One that I do not know the answer to. I actually like using Vista. It is much better than XP. I simply felt that because Windows 7 only has a few differences I shouldn't have to pay full price again. I'm not particularly fond of their upgrade disks. I have bad memories of windows ME *shudder*.
- bjornski, on 01/09/2009, -2/+10"I think I've said enough to take the wind out of any potential defense by Windows loving idiots."
No. You just made yourself look like a pretentious ass. - meghalc, on 01/09/2009, -2/+10Its called the Taskbar! Its been there since 95!
- jhaks, on 01/09/2009, -0/+8Exactly. Vista had a lot of work done on the core OS and as a result was a much more stable and robust OS than XP. I have to say it seems (from what I've read) that the Windows team during 7's development has become more agile and focused when it comes to their development practices and organization. Kudos to MS. I can't imagine how hard it is to develop a stable general purpose OS for nearly a billion users. It is the ultimate torture test.
- sloonark, on 01/09/2009, -0/+810 Mhz?
- RagnabroK, on 01/09/2009, -6/+13I've put it on my laptop, it really does run this good. It even found all the obscure devices on my gateway... like the internal wireless USB adaptor.
- killerofkiller, on 01/09/2009, -3/+10So OSX 10.7 will be out by this fall?
- JamesMorris, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8What time are they handing out keys?
- etjrowe, on 01/09/2009, -0/+7That's true, but then again, I could have put Vista in that sentence. Has never given me a problem. For me, seeing the progress that has turned into Windows 7 is a bonus.
- mrbutter, on 01/09/2009, -3/+10Nope, it's a taskbar.
- illustrick, on 01/09/2009, -2/+9still no Win FS? boo-urns
- MScrip, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8> "Don't you remember when XP was ready to launch in 2001?"
Yes I remember. Which is why I think it's funny today. - PhoenixAvatar2, on 01/09/2009, -3/+10I was unaware that your "dock" had a start menu. Or a clock. Or a tray for background programs. My bad.
- pyroguy56011, on 01/09/2009, -1/+7They've bought all the reviews by users on Digg and other sites too? Maybe I should start talking about it on websites unfavorably, so Microsoft mails me a check. That's how it works, right?
***** tool. - ron7852, on 01/09/2009, -3/+9Vista is really not anywhere as bad as everyone claims it to be... The only thing that people have to bitch about it is the UAC, which can be turned off in a matter of 4 clicks. If you get rid of all the ***** OEM software that comes on laptops and go through the services and whatnot and make sure none of the BS is running all the time, it runs really great. The only thing I can say that bothers me about Vista is that there is no folder up button in the explorer.
- benitojuarez, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6elaborate, i thought compared to ie 6 and 7, and compared to them ONLY, that ie8 is pretty damn sweet.
- flangepiece, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6A slider you say?
