The sad part about all of this is that nobody realizes that it's because of global warming that we're having all of these "super storms". Something tells me that within 20 years that movie, "The day after tomorrow" might come true.
----
We had the same amount of hurricanes in 1969 (I think that is the correct yr.). Was their global warming then? There is NO factual evidence that shows global warming exists. I go on facts, not speculation. - Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well this sux, I live in Orlando and we are expected to get hit during the weekend, however they are predicting it will loose strength by the time it reaches us.

B.U.L.L. S.H.I.T."
Might be a bit extreme but I'm inclined to agree with him. We have to much NON recorded weather history to say something like that. How do we know this isn't something that happens every few centuries? - TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Do you realize that within the past two years, a hurricane has hit both Spain and South America - places where scientists previously thought it was impossible? "
Jesusphreak,
You might want to try getting your facts straight, and stop with the wild speculation. Spain has been hit by hurricanes quite a few times, and so has South America. If scientists think its impossible for hurricanes to hit those places, then they're so stupid that they can't even do a 30 second lookup of the facts like I did.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gifs/allstorms.gif - Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah this is a dupe of leo's post so im not digging this. However, it should be noted leo that the reason yours didnt reach the front page is because of your wording. "5th lowest pressure reading" is not as attention catching as "most intense atlantic storm ever".
You got served because hes better at yellow journalism than you are =P - TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is all complete stupidity. We break records EVERY DAY! Big deal. We've only been doing accurate recordings of our weather for the past hundred years or so. Breaking a record doesn't mean that the level found is extreem. It just means we haven't recorded it yet.
So go ahead and run around screaming about how "global warming" causes every broken record. Run for the hills. The End is near! - fixit2new, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0high res photo from NOAA:

- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0scary stuff. And we've still got another month left in the hurricane season.
- Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ScottyTee
Thanks for your concern, since last hurricane season we've learn our lesson and (hopefully) everyone here are making preparations.
@atrus80
If you have been through a cat 1 hurricane you would know that it still can cause an extensive amount of damage, especially since Wilma is moving very slow flood damage is expected. - atrus80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0big friggin deal, people just wanna have stuff to write about, you have records being broken every day, just depends on how you filter the requirements. its going to drop to a cat 3 or 4 by the time it hits landfall, and then its going to drop again to a cat 1 as it starts to move over land, wow, everyone freak out, cat 1 coming through!
- hipsterelitist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0New Orleans can never get #1 anything. Early congrats to the sunshine state for stealing all the red cross/fema money that has yet to get to my family.
- JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if anyone bothered to check recent science journals they would notice that scientists from many universities have recently discovered that Global warming has nothing to do with us. Why is the climate getting warming, because the Sun is getting hotter, like an oven, the coils are heating up and have been since the beginning. What we down here on earth isnt affecting the increase of heat from the sun. that's all nature baby.
Personally I agree with these reports, they may be wrong but it sounds good to me. - Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wasn't really sure where to put it. I was thinking technology from the use of the Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft, used to obtain the data.
Sorry if I mis-categorized it. - Kido1986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I live in Orlando. This is gonna suck. If I die during this, none of you can have my computer (before anyone asks :P)

When did we ever have 3 cat 5s in less than two months? Two of them being some of the most powerful storms EVER - one of them being the most powerful ever. There is a month and a half left in the hurricane season. We've only just tied the record. What happens if we get another 2-3 hurricanes? Will you still be talking this nonsense?
Don't be naive people. This is not normal. - Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just hope this thing loses some steam before making landfall.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe you should be the one to get your facts straight.
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2004/02apr_hurricane.htm
That covers Catarina (the South American hurricane). You may do a Google on Vince. - gordie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Global warming is fact. Modern records show a trend. Naval records go for hundreds of years. Geological records show many periods of extreme conditions. The reasons will always be argued about, but it is happening.
- mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Category 5 storms rarely hold their strength for longer than 24 hours. Plus, Wilma will be going into a rather unfavorable environment when it takes a turn to the east. Still should be strong when it zips across FL, though...
- leomyhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks lionheart
- HeavyNuclei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I certainly agree that we do not have enough meteorological or climatic data to conclude whether or not these intense hurricanes are; in fact, a result of global warming. However, when do we draw the line? If we happen to draw it to late, it won't be the end of the world, but it could result in major climatic change. I for one would like to be slightly preemptive and at least acknowledge the possibility that this might be global warming at work.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"1969 = recorded history."
1969 = when Hurricane Camille hit Mississipi, which is obviously not South America.
Are you being serious or are you really just not reading at all? - Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The sad part about all of this is that nobody realizes that it's because of global warming that we're having all of these "super storms"."
Actually they mention this on the news all the time.
"We had the same amount of hurricanes in 1969 (I think that is the correct yr.). Was their global warming then? There is NO factual evidence that shows global warming exists. I go on facts, not speculation."
Yes we did. Actually it was just as bad then if not worse because we didn't have emission controls on cars for air pollution as much as we do now. And there were less laws controlling factory pollution.
Personally I live in Florida and if this ***** continues year after year you can bet I won't be living in Florida much longer. I predict a lot of people will be leaving the gulf coast area of the US because were just tired of getting hit. Who in their right mind would want to continue to live in New Orleans after their house got washed away? - Mattrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im with Zipper and Adml Shake on this one. Jesusphreak... how do you know this isn't normal?
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Personally I live in Florida and if this ***** continues year after year you can bet I won't be living in Florida much longer. I predict a lot of people will be leaving the gulf coast area of the US because were just tired of getting hit."
I'm right there with ya. (I live in Daytona). Wanna carpool to Oregon? Seriously, I'm utterly sick of this *****. We got hit THREE times last year. - MicahC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shouldn't this be categorized as science?
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0adml_shake, easy...all way have to do is buy lots of SUVs and lawn mowers, run your house with gas generators and accelerate this global warming.
if you are right, then nothing will happen. - TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read the link bud.
"And yes, scientists previously thought it was impossible for a hurricane to hit South America and one never has in recorded history."
1969 = recorded history.
Nuff said. - alexanderhazard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" But Wilma wasn't expected to keep its record strength for long"
Was that a typo, or is it still going to keep the record strength? - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apparently you didn't even bother reading the link, because only the header mentions Camille (the 1969 hurricane).
And yes, scientists previously thought it was impossible for a hurricane to hit South America and one never has in recorded history.
Read the link before you make ingorant statements. - TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Maybe you should be the one to get your facts straight."
Man.. you're funny.
You first say it NEVER happens.. "Scientists" say so! Then when I show you that it DOES happen, you give a link to a storm that happened in ----> 1969 as proof that they never happen. And somehow this proves that things are getting crazy. Please.. stop with the pseudoscience while you still can. - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait, wait...I think I understand what you are not getting.
You are thinking that I'm meaning, southern America, correct? I'm talking about the continent of South America which has no association to the United States at all. - TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, my mistake. I mixed up the names. So.. One hurricane in South America = "Freak out, this never happens." Again, I refer you to the map of paths of hurricanes for over the last hundred years. One hurricane that went extra south is not a big deal. Again, I say, don't try infering a bunch of stuff from ONE EVENT.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gifs/allstorms.gif - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Last word of title ommitted by ABC for sensationalism: Recorded
"Something tells me that within 20 years that movie, "The day after tomorrow" might come true."
h4lofourt33n = Al Gore?
Then of course there's a lot of those disaster movies that could come true. Then you could also be creamed by an 18-wheeler driving to work tomorrow morning. Lots of things could happen. - dJCL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/satellite/animateweb_e.html?imagetype=satellite&imagename=goes_enam_1070_m_..................jpg&nbimages=1&clf=1
I know it's long, but under the pic chose all, then at the top increase the speed a bit and hit play...
Wow.
Then look at the temp scale at the bottom(it's in deg C).
JC - TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and the hurricane you're referring to is named "Catarina", per the reference in your article:
"The people of Brazil themselves have named it, unofficially, Hurricane Catarina, after the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina where the storm made landfall"
That's where I got the names mixed up, if you wanted to know.
BTW, I'm not trying to get into a flame war with you or anything, but please try to see things in perspecitave. When looking at weather patterns, you have to see them in a geological time scale. We've only been recording these things for a mere blip in the overall time scale. Saying that a hurricane hits Spain or South America means nothing. There could have been hundreds or thousands that hit in those locations before we started recording it.
The Earth has warmed up and cooled down many times in its past. Weather patterns are more than yearly seasonal, we have seasons that span thousands of years, and trying to predict this with such a small sample of weather recordings is extreemly difficult. - Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ziffel
Actually they were 4, Charlie, Frances, Jeanne, and Ivan. - tas783, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If memory serves me correctly in the 90's global warming was "causing the polar ice caps to melt and having a cooling effect on the worlds oceans" and was all the big fear. Now its 2005 and global warming is causing hurricanes. Now, if the polar ice caps were melting in the 90's and the oceans were cooling, that would mean less hurricanes not more. The most likely explanation of the increase in hurricanes is a natural cycle. At least it makes more sense to me than "evil man destroys everything because he exists..."

Now off to check my plywood from last year and make sure its still good. :) - samoscratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no no, global warming is a myth, yeah yeah
and the holocaust? never happened.... - ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"@ziffel
Actually they were 4, Charlie, Frances, Jeanne, and Ivan."
Very true, but by "we got hit three times", I meant my family and the Daytona area specifically. - alarion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good lord.
strongest hurricane ever? I am sure you have the historical data from the last, what? 5billion years to support this claim? How can you possibly suggest that we are causing this (or better yet, Bush is causing this.. because he doesn't care about black people) when you have approx 100years of data to go on?
You have to realize the Earth has *natural* cycles. You might know this as "ice ages". We happen to be coming out of a "mini" ice age. Hence, the Earth is warming up naturally. Sure, maybe we are helping it along, but this is a direct cause of "global warming" (as in: caused 100% by humans) is a bit extreme. - kobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ziffel
yo, I'm in Daytona too. I can't take this anymore. I'm having second thoughts about going to university out of state :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG, I have family in Florida....I hope nothing major happens :o(

It actually has to do with cyclical warming of the atlantic which happens every 20 years. Global warming is not proven. The earth naturally has temperture fluctuations and we have only been recording the temerature scientifically since the end of the 19th century. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/science/Hurricane_Wilma_STRONGEST_HURRICANE_EVER_
