- FreeDeb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20It's been a while since I bought a new machine (I've been lucky with a string of second hand stuff) so it hadn't occurred to me that the consumer usually pays for the Microsoft OS whether they want it or not. Lopping off the cost of Vista from the price of a new computer has got to be significant. I can't see why manufacturers wouldn't want to offer that option -- unless of course *someone* is leaning on them not to.
- whiznat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Vista DRM - this has got to be in the Top 5 Worst Technology Mistakes ever. It's THE reason I am going to hold off on buying Vista as long as possible, forever I hope. DRM, the scourge of the universe, sucketh.
- Area66, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19You know the old saying "It's not who controls the press, it's who owns the printing press" is especially apt on this issue. The simple fact is that if you can't open it, you don't own it.
If you own a Chevy, should you only be allowed to drive on roads approved by GM for your Chevy?
Computer hardware is no different, you pay for it, you should be able to modify it - or drive it where you want to, as you please.
Spread the word. Join the FSF while you are at it. It will make you feel good, and it will help a good cause - your freedom. - alexjohnc3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16DRM must stop now, before it becomes too much of a norm. If businesses support the free software community, they can help to stop this before it's too late to go back.
- pvdg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Actually, this will also be a sound business decision. The first manufacturer that caters for the free software community will have a competitive edge.
- MasterJediYoda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This paper is great. A lot of people who use GNU/Linux and notice some hardware doesn't work.. they don't realize the hardware manufacturer doesn't tell you how the hardware works. Hardware used to come with documentation of memory registers etc when you bought it. With a lot of hardware sold today, they don't give you documentation of the hardware, therefore free/libre software drivers are extremely difficult to write for it.(ie wireless chipsets)
If hardware manufacturers gave documentation of their devices, like most cdrom/dvdrw/cdrw drives do(not including lightscribe related stuff), and like most hard disk drive manufacturers do(they follow a common standard).. then those devices will just work.
But when you buy a wireless card with broadcom chipset, or if you buy ATI or Nvidia hardware...(graphics card).. the simple fact is they're selling you hardware and not telling you how it works, which is sad. They aren't giving you documentation of memory registers so you know how to hardware works and are able to write your own free/libre drivers. - brashley46, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Manufacturers have got to realise that Microsoft's standards will not be allowed to be the Internet's standards. Vista especially is getting closer to making them realise this, as people like me stay away from this piece of bloatware and the hardware upgrades necessary to run it.
- Sharn8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6technconsultant, Yes, there is upgrade options. Windows always has and always will have them, even if there is a 50% chance of making Window's bottom fall out from under it.
This sounds like a great idea. I would *definitely* buy GNU/Linux/Open-Source hardware over anything else. Not only that, but I plan on recommending any hardware that does so to everyone I know, too. I think if drivers could be written open-source they would far surpass drivers built by the manufacturer in very little time. (Especially in the graphics card area - there is extreme need for Open-source drivers in that area) Ever since I jumped on the Linux train it's been a fun, entertaining experience and I hope the hardware manufacturers can increase that even more. :)
Down with Vista and DRM. - sadgit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6DRM is already dead - look at the number of big players that are trying to move to DRM-free. DVD Jon first showed the way. The encryption on various Blu-ray type disks has already been broken.
Some years ago I attended a seminar where one of the speakers was a lawyer, but also very IT/Computer savvy. His take on it was that the guys who write this stuff are employees, and they work 9 to 5 just doing what their boss tells them to do. The opponent (DVD Jon, etc) simply does not care whether it takes him 1 hour or 1000 hours to break it, but break it they will.
Why doesn't M$ stop being the glove puppet of the totally corrupt film industry, and the equally totally corrupt music business?? FFS they turn over /many times/ what both those industries combined do! ... Unless the Beast of Redmond wants it all for himself! In which case he will still be in the same position. As US forces in Vietnam and Russian forces in Afghanistan found out, there is simply no way to defeat a determined and clever guerilla operation.
Set it all free - find other funding models. Some are already surfacing.
Me - VISTA? You must be joking! - jayeola, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Are these DRM people telling me that they have a say in what I do with my hardware that I paid for? No chance 'cos I ain't using it!
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The smarter thing to do would be to boycott the actual DRM media, not those who provide you a way to play the content with the rubbish DRM the big media companies insist on no matter how futile it is.
- robin850, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just bought a new Dell laptop with Vista, (just because I run a service biz and will have to help others support it.) Yikes, what a piece of bloatware!
My 6 yr old laptop running PuppyLinux is faster and more reliable than my brand new dualcore, 2gb of ram monster!
Please, make hardware unchained from proprietary code and legal limitations!
cheers,
robin850 - Renich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I am glad to see the community involved in this. Most people don't want to know what's going on and keep it going as it is. I support freedom because I was born free and want to keep pursuing this freedom or the level of freedom I already have.
One is never 100% free, but let my freedom be limited by ignorance and not by some company, some idea or someone... I want to be able to decide where my limits are set... Please do join the FSF and make this world a little bit better. - mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the manufacturers of different kinds of hardware will show different levels of willingness to open their devices. For some companies, drivers are a money pit and offer no competitive advantage, so they will be happy to have any help from the open source community as far as drivers go. Companies could look at producing open source drivers and releasing them to the community, essentially receiving bug fixes and updates for free. I imagine wireless networking devices are an example of this.
On the other hand, some companies actually use the superiority of their drivers as a selling point, or the difficulty of producing quality drivers as a barrier to entry for competitors. For example, Nvidia sells a lot of video cards on the quality of their drivers, and many of the small startup graphics card companies that competed with them were destroyed by their inability to make decent drivers. I imagine they'll show an extreme reluctance to open source their own drivers, as will ATI. Printers are another class of device where this could occur, but to a lesser degree.
Still, I think a lot of companies could benefit by working with the free software community, and I hope this does take off. - o0splitpaw0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, I am small computer store and not selling Vista for 3 reasons this year:
1. Cost - You going to pay $135.0 for premium from me sorry - gotta make a living
2. Compatibility - I'm not worried about the system I would of built with Vista, but if a customer was a on budget: not knowing if their older software they own and printer/camera wasn't supported by Vista because that hardware/software vendor decided it be cheaper to sunset support for it, that would make a $799.00 special end up costing as much as $2,300.00 in the end. Not a great experience with my PC, nor with Vista.
3. Performance. The minimum requirements with Vista are in no way realistic! - At least a gig of DDR2 memory for basic. 2 Gigs for Premium & Business, & 4 GB of memory for Ultimate - Not for reasons that the operating system needs it, but newer games are going to need more than 512 to operate, therefor Games such as Battlefield 2042 need at least a gig to operate. People will install their own flavors of software, so I always keep that in perspective when I build them. If I didn't the machines would be running to a crawl with in a week of ownership. It's good business to look out for the customer.
I am selling Ubuntu this year. I can knock off over $900.00 off the cost of the PC, in caparison to someone buying Windows Vista Ultimate + Office 2007.
Now that is REAL Value. And yes, I offer 30 days of support, but can suggest online support from Ubuntu's community, plus if they want help for something quick, they can purchease phone support from Ubuntu, or come to me to help them with anything. - Drakazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I gotta love the products that actually work everywhere :)
Ditch M$! - larrycafiero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thumbs up. In complete agreement. Go FSF!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The "Microsoft" tax that makes a new pc with windows $57 cheaper than a new pc with linux at dell?
- Toksyuryel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as the corps that support DRM go, they know exactly what they are doing. For them it is all about consumer control, and milking us for as much cash as they can. These dishonest business practices have already led me to boycott companies like Microsoft, Intel, the RIAA and the MPAA, and probably some others that I can't think of right now.

http://drdcha.qlbe.com/page/1.html - Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We now have the capability to combine BIOS and basic OS functionality in hardware (we have for a long time)
With such a combination, we can upgrade our hardware for what it is designed to be used for, powerful software, not a bloated operating system.
A company, most likely from China, will turn the PC into a commodity item for the next billion users. Cheaper, better, faster - that is capitalism. Microsoft has become a bureaucratic commune for vested and festering interests. It can not compete in the free market for much longer.
- tenjin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think Linux needs all it can get from any of the top hardware manufacturers, including Dell. This is what is going to help spread freedom to the masses unknowingly caught in the clutches of evil proprietary garbage. I see your point that Linux is great without the help from anyone and other areas need concentrated on like WiFi.
I run Ubuntu on a Dell and it runs great, it runs better on a Dell then Winblows...that's the whole point of Dell & Linux lying together. It runs better on a Dell than what's pre-installed on a Dell. That's why Dell should at least try it or no install any OS at all. And I agree with all the people on here about joining the FSF at fsf.org....everyone who supports Linux should join and stand up and make a change!!!! - philgra27, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1php development, wordpress themes, joomla themes, themes

- turbosatan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In the uk there is a dvd player available from ASDA (Superstore
it is the pacific dvd player which plays every dvd i have ever thrown at it. it also plays mp3's vcd's svcd's in fact just about everything you might want except for divx files.
it also cost at the time of purchase £30 which is cheap even for a budget dvd player.
my girlfriend after going for a job interview for some graphic design work was told that the company she hoped to work for had the job of redesigning the packaging for the pacific dvd player as they now count for 1/3 of all dvd players bought in the uk.
yuet my dad's £1000 bose dvd system wont read some disks.

"The "Microsoft" tax that makes a new pc with windows $57 cheaper than a new pc with linux at dell?"
Is it really cheaper in the long run? After the average person takes it home, what are they likely to do? Probably go out and PURCHASE hundreds of dollars in additional software for that system. Compare that to the Linux system where the average person would have tens of thousands of FREE open source applications to install whenever they want.
When you really make a sane comparison, Linux is the healthier choice for your wallet. - pepto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ready to buy any PC (Laptop or Desktop) coming without Win. Will install Ubuntu Linux for performance and freedom of use. Plus the security and power of a Unix-based machine.
- Onwards, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0M$ & all of its DRM crap may do what they want to do...
I am not going to use winblows ever, not in place of Linux at least... As I like to poke my nose into internals of the system all the time & for that I need CLI (command-prompt). Thus I already sometimes hate GUIs, as they hinder my way in most situations...
Situation is getting better with this freedom-from-binary-blob-campaign, as GIGABYTE M57SLI-S4, the first-ever desktop motherboard supported by a Free & Open Source BIOS, is available for purchase now ! And it would soon be followed by more contributions like this, God willing !!

Like the rest of the free open source world, I'm cautiously optimistic about this. - TechnConsultant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I was informed by HP Quality Care support that upgrades for Windows XP PC's to Vista do not exist. They encouraged me not to upgrade my three Compaq servers to Vista. I was told to wait until things ' settled down' with Vista. There are no software or hardware packages available for Windows XP or previous OS systems to convert to Vista. They do not exist and there are no plans to provide them.
