- geminitojanus, on 12/02/2007, -0/+44Inaccurate; Wikipedia will be licensed under the GNU FDL's future version, which will be Creative Commons compatible.
If I had written anything in Wikipedia and didn't read the GFDL close enough for a "Or Future Versions" clause, I might be pissed, but most people won't care (especially as most posters of content are anonymous and there's no way for them to object). At least CC-BY-SA is a rather strong copyleft. - ChuqAU, on 12/02/2007, -0/+15Just in case you aren't joking :) Wikimedia never had an issue with you talking information from it (so long as it is source). Plagiarism has to do with the recipient of the information (eg. your school/uni) not being aware that it isn't your own work.
- eean, on 12/02/2007, -1/+14CC-BY-SA is in the same spirit as GFDL.
GFDL is just weighted down by lots of language thats very specific to releasing whole books copyleft, so its never been a great fit for Wikipedia. - Gadren, on 12/02/2007, -0/+9This is great, but just to point out something: we can't just say a "Creative Commons license," since it's the specific type that determines so much. CC-BY-SA is already considered by the FSF to be both free and copyleft, so it's a great fit anyway.
- Synova, on 12/02/2007, -4/+12Possibly quadrupled.
- slythfox, on 12/02/2007, -0/+8It's the title that's inaccurate. The original title reads: "Breaking news: Wikipedia announces Creative Commons compatibility!"
Remember: "CC-BY-SA is already considered by the FSF to be both free and copyleft, so it's a great fit anyway." (quote by Gadren, here: http://www.digg.com/tech_deals/Wikipedia_will_be_l ... - duddles, on 12/02/2007, -2/+10I miss Stephen...

- sirhomer, on 12/02/2007, -0/+5This is really good. The GFDL has a lot of language that makes distributing articles from Wikipedia difficult, because you have to do stuff like print an entire copy of the GFDL along with it. Imagine a 3 page article with a 20 page license agreement. That's what they are trying to remove.
- MilesTeg, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3compatibility seems to be solved:

If that's true that would be awesome news for many wikis and GFDL sources! - Kral, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3Last I checked, no CC license was DFSG-free[1] so such content can't be included in Debian. Is this going to just create more compatibility problems, or is a solution to DFSG-compatibility on the way?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyleft - 42Vindictive, on 12/02/2007, -2/+3Can someone put this in "I'm-busy-playing-Contra-4-and-dont-want-to-RTFA" terms?
- sirhomer, on 12/02/2007, -0/+1Plagiarism isn't always illegal, but it is very often against university policy because they want you to actually put some effort into your studies. Copy and pasting something from the 1800s as your own essay is a good example of this. Attribution is completely optional in a public domain work.
- 5hinmyoken, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1i know this is all great news and stuff..but like others said...what does it mean? can someone who feels knowledgable give a couple of examples where this would apply? and does it mean that wikipedias in other countries (languages) will have a different license? for instance i believe here in germany you cannot give away your copyright legally.

- Mohrba769, on 12/02/2007, -2/+2well thats good that the interoperability is now fixed so people who up load to wikipedia have a choice to use Creatvie Commons
