- mcryptic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+55their IRC channel says: Down | Power/network problems at the Florida colo
- hunto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42What attack? From the article you linked to it says:
"Power/network problems at the Florida colo. They're being worked on. Some servers coming back online."
Edit: beaten by seconds - sithmat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+29It's the terrorists, they know what our weak spot is.
- nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23" 'OMFG ATTACKZ0RZ!!!!!!!!11' gets dug, facts don't."
Who are you the New York Times? You're posting this to a news website, not participating in a popularity contest. Even if you want to have your title be somewhat misleading just to get diggs, at least give it some merit, a little bit of truth. But blatantly making up lies about why this site is down, is not the way to go about it, at least on digg. - hunto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Yeah, and hopefully enough people bury the top two comments so you don't end up looking like a dumbass.
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Yup. Nothing screams academic integrity like a cite to Wikipedia.
- ultimathule, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12No, I like to censor stupid generalizations.
- aristotle1990, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13This is where my downloaded copy of Wikipedia comes in handy.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm kinda curious... in academics these days, what do professors think of Wikipedia?
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12bpapa: I think in about 2-3 of the five classes I'm taking this semester the professor has gone out of their way to say that citing Wikipedia entries isn't really that legitimate. I don't think many would say that Wikipedia is bad, but it's like citing an encyclopedia- probably not the best way to back up an argument. It's a good way to get a lot of the overview on a specific topic, but for in-depth knowledge you should go to sources that cover it in-depth.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Terrible. Hope things are ok, and this isn't out-of-control-bad. If its really 16 or more hours and counting, it must be ugly. Until then, my favorite Penny Arcade strip on Wikipedia:
"I Have the Power"
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/12/16 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14You're right. Knowledge and information are teh suck!!
- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6wow... just wow... that goes beyond reporting without finding the facts, thats reporting false information simply for self gain. And not even for that good of self gain, one number higher on your user rating is about it. If i were digg mod, i would ban your account, if digg wants to at all be considered a place for people to get their news, they can't have idots like you doing idiotic things like this.
- michaelstone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Uh, my teacher has outright called it Satan and gone through the sources people had printed out and ripped up Wikipedia articles.
- TROGDOR42, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11For all that want to read one of the articles, search Google for "wikipedia " without quotes. Then click on the cache.
- jeruvin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The IRC is pretty busy with all the traffice directed from the error page that says "For further information, you can visit the #wikipedia channel on the Freenode IRC network."
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That would be so much funnier if everybody and their damned brother wasn't saying 42 every chance they got.
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4lol, someone probably kicked the power cord and damaged the outlet. But yeah, pictures are working along with the actual site.
I think I am going to download wikipedia just for archival purposes.. - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Yup. Nothing screams academic integrity like a cite to Wikipedia."
I challenge you to point towards a better web accessible reference.
Try hard, so that instead of insulting those of us who do cite Wikipedia, you could actually add to the discussion.
Wikipedia is also full of links to non-Wikipedia sources and discussions of the topics that is often much higher quality than alot of what appears on -this- site, leetspeak notwithstanding.
@lo0ol
That's a pretty broad stroke you're painting there. Wikipedia undercuts academic elitism, so it is attacked by the academic elite? - Lewisham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Or because it's not "under attack"
- antron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5http://www.google.com/search?q=mdma+ptsd
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nearly all of the servers are located in Florida... I think Yahoo! has donated a few servers that are located somewhere else. There is an Asia cluster, but other than that, it's U.S. based. I think.
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Wikipedia is also full of links to non-Wikipedia sources and discussions of the topics that is often much higher quality than alot of what appears on -this- site, leetspeak notwithstanding." - deepsub
I know that- I'm not challenging Wikipedia at all. I love Wikipedia; I think it's a great resource. But I simply don't think it's the best source you can cite when writing a paper. The best sources to back up your argument stem from hard, concrete evidence, and in that regard the more rigid the source the better. Wikipedia is a fantastic source to get a broad overview of the particular topic that you're studying, and, through its links to other resources on the subject, can give you a great jumpstart on where else to look for in your quest for research. But I don't think it's specific enough to cover every issue fully, at least in an academic setting.
I like Wikipedia a great deal, though probably not as much as many others (I don't spend every day on there, for example). For those of you who are big fans of Wikipedia, here's what THEY have to say about it:
"Keep in mind: Wikipedia is not authored by accredited researchers (anyone can add to it). For many purposes, it may not be considered an acceptable source. In particular, many schools do not consider Wikipedia an acceptable source for student papers, especially without corroboration, and we ourselves advise caution when using Wikipedia as a source in serious research projects. Still, we believe that Wikipedia generally provides good overviews of most topics that it covers."

- Hydroxyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mcyrptic:
True, we just had some storms pass by today. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uh. There is. You click the report dropdown and select "inaccurate".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its funny how the title says wikipedia, then the text says wikimedia. dolt.
- aaadamaa, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10I was reading an article about life the universe and everything, and clicked on 42. no more wikipedia. WHAT IS THE WORLD TO DO?!?!?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3really, most teachers after elementary school don't like you to cite any encyclopedia, and wikipedia tends to fall under that category.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is it really ethical to post accusatory statements (i.e. Wikipedia was down b/c of an attack on their servers) without any sources and without acknowledgment from Wikipedia? Makes me wonder if the submitter said so simply to get the story on Digg's front page for people who don't RTFA...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Lets hope they created a backup :-D
/me shudders at the thought of an empty wikipedia - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bah! What a lie. No attack on wikipedia. The power went out according to all the blogs, and it's back now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I say we blame Adam Curry for it.
- fogster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Are they still all located in one DC? For some reason I'd thought they had servers throughout the world.
- lightdarknes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't submit stories if you don't know what you're talking about.
A breaker broke at the colo center, causing a power outage to the Wikimedia servers. When power was restored, it took some time to bring the servers back up safely.
Reported story for inaccuracy. - aelfrice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed.
The internet is not the place to look for information on drugs. People have a lot riding on the way drugs are presented. Some need to see drugs in a different light than the clinical-minded. Erowid is a place where you can find those people's comments.
Sigh. I can remember a few years ago when I spent a week reading everything in the "vaults of erowid" and promptly going out and trying all the drugs I learned I should do. That was a funny year.
Shame on you for putting it off. You're gonna present incomplete information if you rely on the internet alone. - kacymartin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4this got modded down the first time you posted it, why post it again?
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Let me guess... With a name like berean, you're probably pissed that evolution is presented as a fact, right?
*sigh* - Nighthawke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Next time you characters say the sky is falling, make sure to look up to see if it actually is.
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its back up 12:26 AM EST
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page - sonnyF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just so everyone knows, Florida is experiencing some pretty strong thuderstorms today. The storms may have affected Wikipedia's colo somehow.
- masterofshadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's under review because of the missleading headline (attack)
- rvalles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28technical%29#Downtime
- crypto55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I noticed that today. I was trying to read some data, and it took forever to load, and then timed out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm stupid. I read that several times and was like "Wikipedia is backup? Backup for what?"
- computerjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can confirm this. I was on IRC yesterday when this was happening.
- Loyaleagle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This digg is lame (and so reported) because it is essentially just reporting that a site is down. If there were an article about the attack or something...but no, just that it's down. Honestly, just google for your answer for a while till the site is back up....
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think it's safe to say that hackers/script kiddies are not that malicious "Attacking Wikipedia" It just makes no sense it's public domain... Story has a false subtitle, reported..
- cybrauralninjuh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this... figures someone would make a diggory out of it.
