- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46Good to see money going to a good cause.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38Wikipedia rules. Remember how it was on its early beginning? I was like WTF... I can actually edit this!
- utcursch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23@Jtkiefer Are you the same guy who wasn't elected as one of the "immoral and corrupt" admins?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Jtkiefer_3 - shadow22, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26I was drunk and must have punched $286,800 meaning $2.86. Finally I know where that money went!!!
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You're right, only $59,846.25 off.
Still $940,153.75 is impressive. - useful, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14you can use wikipedia, just not directly. Use their notes and references to cite things and you'll be fine.
- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I'm glad they got 1 million, it's great to have such a informative site with no ads at all.
- Niten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12According to the Wikipedia article on Wikipedia itself (heh):
"Its 4th Quarter 2005 costs were $321,000 USD, with hardware making up almost 60% of the budget."
That's about $107,000 per month. This was the most recent data on Wikipedia's operational costs that The Wikimedia Foundation seems to provide.
I'm sure they'll be able to put this donation to good use. - dubcanada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You honestly don't think they need alot? YouTube spends 1 million a month on Bandwidth, and WikiPedia is more popular according to Alexa.. They need atleast a Million to run for a year.
- MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Couldn't go to a more deserving site :)
Long live Wikipedia! - haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@Joe091: "Wtf, why would you announce the $1 million mark before they actually reach it? Why not just announce it at $500k when it rounds up to $1 million?"
@boghy2k replies: "They are raising with ~50K / day.
Calculated about a day for this to get popular, and voila."
--
Wow, that's your justification? You were thinking you'd try to time your Digg submission with the donation figures? Lame, very lame.
"Officer, I figured he'd punch me once I was going to grab his girlfriend's ass, so I thought I'd punch him first, *then* grab her ass!" - TechnoGuyRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+81. No.

2. I would suspect video broadcasting consumes more bandwidth than text.
Nevertheless, their costs are indeed great. - brayn80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well non profit organizations need money! All that traffic on the hosting costs money you know!!
- ActivitY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Where I do my education citations of wikipedia is not allowed due to how open it is (for anyone to change). I'd like to see it printed too, that way students who are being denied the right to cite wikipedia can.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6avid user about 10+ times a day donated a few bucks, hope they can expand even more!
- Jasonn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Direct link to the anonymous donation:
http://fundraising.wikimedia.org/en/fundcore/list?page=296 - Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wtf, why would you announce the $1 million mark before they actually reach it? Why not just announce it at $500k when it rounds up to $1 million?
- Firemeboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That donation was mine. I pledged $2.86 on one of their wiki pages, and then somebody edited the page and changed the decimal point.
Crap. - jacobmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Awesome, Half-Life 2 is on the wiki front page!!!!
- sulf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wikipedia doesn't go to your home, it doesn't phone you, it doesn't mail or e-mail you requesting the donation (unlike others). YOU go to THEIR website and see that text link.
It is just so wrong to compare some guy knocking at your door or calling your cellphone and bugging you and Wikipedia fundraising. - sulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wikipedia is great, but today I saw how bad the situation is. I noticed that one of the featured articles had been vandalized, and edited to fix that. However, when I took a look at the article history, i was shocked - more than 80% of all changes were vandalisms. Now I realize what enormous effort it takes for all those contributors not only to add new content, but to keep pages clean of vandalisms. I think that the mankind as it is now just doesn't deserve such a great thing as encyclopedia that is editable by everyone.
- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How much money does wikipedia need a month to run?
- andrewlevy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That donation the author described isn't showing up on the list:
http://fundraising.wikimedia.org/en/fundcore/list?page=277 - mr804, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Couldn't you just subscribe to the porn sites that already pay for wikipedia and have more fun? That's what they've been doing for a while now.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dubcanada, your logic is a bit flawed because of the type of media that YouTube and Wikipedia deal with, so YouTube might have much higher bandwidth and server demands even being less popular than Wikipedia.
- zyntax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pointless blog spam.
- toshipaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MICHAEL: What happened?
PETER: You tell me, Michael, it's your software!
SAMIR: Yes, it's your software!
PETER: Corporate accounting is sure as hell going to notice 305, 3 (grabs the receipt) 26.13!! Michael!!
MICHAEL: They, they probably won't notice it's gone for another two or three days.
PETER: Michael! Michael! You said the thing was gonna take two years!
SAMIR: What happened?!
PETER: You said the thing was supposed to work.
MICHAEL: Well, technically it did work.
PETER: No it didn't!
SAMIR: It did not work, Michael, ok?!
MICHAEL: Ok! Ok!
SAMIR: Ok?!
MICHAEL: Ok! Ok! I must have, I must have put a decimal point in the wrong place or something. *****. I always do that. I always mess up some mundane detail.
PETER: Oh! What is this fairly mundane detail, Michael?!!!!! - toshipaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, but I understand why a professor would say this. Many Wiki articles have information that isn't satisfactorily referenced or sourced. I remember visiting more than a few pages where most of the factoids had [citation needed] after. It's not uncommon to see a paragraph contain four, five [CN]'s. But I think more importantly Wiki makes research easy and fun, because, as we all know, professors like to inflict pain on their students! [citation needed]
- brayn80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not THAT much anyways! Maybe they'll buy a new server farm or smthin'
- juneau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1/cheer
This is great... $1M or even 'only' $941k. That's like $1 for every hour I've spent on there in 2006 randomly jumping topics. - toshipaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wikipedia is made out of people! pppeeeeeeeoooooppppplllleeeee....
- PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any professor who does not allow allow citations from Wikipedia in a research paper is, in my opinion, an idiot - Prof. Paul Levinson, Department of Communication and Media Studies, Fordham University http://www.sff.net/people/paullevinson
- 1337zork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Late edit, not hooray, they have only reached 941,455.86 so far :(
- 1337zork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hooooraaaay!
- d0odx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An amazing concept deserving of the $$.
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think a small number of unobtrusive ads could be very effective actually. Some Wikipedia pages are so niche that if the ad matches the person is almost certainly going to be interested.
- catchifucan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wikipedia deserves it, they've done and keep doing a good job of providing us with info that we need, that we might need, and that we won't need :))) no wonder their stocks are going up http://www.trendio.com/word.php?wordid=2315&language=en
- KingPsyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blog spam, why not link directly to Wikipedia?
- PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A digg for toshipaine above ... written in true Wikipedian style (and that's not NPOV)...
- imitrust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Was that a story or a press release?
Anyway, Wikipedia is a brilliant site from porn to particle acceleration. Love it. - dbzrk, on 02/18/2009, -0/+0WOW i wish i could get that type of donation
kz
http://www.narutobn.com - atashijp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's good to see a world of knowledge built by the people for the people being supported. I wish people were a tenth as enthusiastic about it here in Japan. Universities, corporations, groups, everyone is trying to hide their expertise, calling it tradition. People are so afraid to share here. As if they'd become nothing once their knowledge is disclosed.
These words tells us so much, and anyone with internet access is free to see it. Anyone, anywhere. That's what the internet is all about, Sharing.
Much respects to the editors. - uncannydan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ha, the Wikipedia page for Jtkiefer deserves its own digg. voted against himself when he went up for admin! what a moron!
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"@Jtkiefer Are you the same guy who wasn't elected as one of the "immoral and corrupt" admins?"
If he was, he would be one of the few people that tries to change something they like that is corrupt, instead of just whining about it. Good for him. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'cause I'd like you to see the article as well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It was on the digg front page two weeks ago. Check that for further details, I used it as a refference.
- PeteinSQ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The english in the linked article is terrible. Plus it doesn't look like an official release from wikipedia.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Not a press release. It's a story I wrote after following up closely the donations process.
@PeteinSQ : Talking about terrible English with me, Mr. lowercase-language-man? :) -
