- randovaro, on 10/12/2007, -9/+85Beautiful photo, but I'd like to see the 2007 award go to our official Digg Mascot, "Doug", the Naked Mole Rat...

- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60Compared to your penis, that thing is Miss America.
- Al3x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58#1 with 83 votes?
- DS513, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34I was honestly expecting to be bombarded with goatse.
- Jumba990, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29That's a great picture, nature at its most beautiful.
- InMSWeAntitrust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25*revokes high-five*
- recyclablewaste, on 07/15/2008, -4/+27...But is it. I don't understand how you can look at that picture and not think of all the things put into place for you to even begin thinking about it (and yes, that sentence does make sense).
*Initiate run-on sentence*
The sun and earth, however you "believe" they were formed, being at the right spots at the right time for a solar flare to shoot off and hit our atmosphere right over a human, made by generations of births and deaths, to be holding a camera, made through generations of technological breakthroughs, that was kind enough to upload the photo for every other human with a passion for nature to view. One single alteration to 1,000's (millions?) of years of events could've altered what photo was even displayed, or if Digg.com would even exist. And without the latter, who knows if you would’ve even had the chance to view such a beautiful work of natural art. Who knows? What we do know is that you're too ignorant to think of such things.
Try expanding your knowledge of this unknown universe rather than smashing your head into your monitor. It’s a waste of a good monitor for someone else to expand their mind. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Beautiful photos... definitely worth the honour and recognition.
- AdamTReineke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26It is way to early in the morning for that...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23great picture
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -12/+33Comments like: "A stunning comment on the relationship of our technological society with the rest of the planet." make me want to smash my monitor to pieces with my face.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22whys it always some nature crap
isn't there at least one picture of a nina robot squishing the heads of children and the elderly on wikipedia? - Eastlygod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18There were over 320 pictures, so it makes sense that the picture with the most votes doesn't have a huge majority. Or any majority for that matter.
- djwk1928, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"Old, but I digg it."
Why would it not be old? Hence "Picture of the Year/2006" - Cyraq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17spectacular
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12then here's the original.

Its pretty common for photographers to adjust the colors after the picture is taken. - bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14*replaces with low five*
*keeps change* - TexanPsycho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11As a side note: the naked mole rat is the only animal that sleeps for less than an hour...
- PrincessZelda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@PradaPete
Your name... is PRADA Pete and within this one thread you've suggested you'd like to create unfounded violence in some sort of built up rage then accused someone of being a homosexual when it had nothing to do with that whatsoever. You are perhaps the most obvious case of homosexual denial and homophobia I've seen in my life. - Juroujin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Why was the anatomy of a worker ant considered? The 'best picture' has 83 out of 658 votes? What the..?
Well anyway, those are nice pictures - adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Nice pic! It is my new desktop wallpaper.
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13@Vaerok why would OS matter for how a background looks? As long as you have a good monitor and a computer that can display pictures with a decent resolution it would look the same...
Something tells me you bought Vista for one reason: "Ooh, Shiny!" - byronm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@ xtmno3
Probably because with Aero the transparency looks really good with everything running. Believe it or not the image looks fantastic in vista and drab in XP because of the way everything flows if you have Aero enabled.
Get over yourself. - AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ emuking: That's far out man. You just blew my mind! What if D O G really spelled cat?
But seriously, I think you have a wonderful outlook on life, and I often feel the same way when I see images from Mars and Titan. - Mipmap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Another great source for wallpaper - most have high-res versions.

- Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Am I the only one that sees the horrible oversharpening for the #2 image? There's a halo around his head because of it.
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3original http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a9/Polarlicht.jpg
- laterallateral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yes. Also, popcicles.
The popcicles are great because they are delicious. - AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dang, I couldn't remember which way it was when I posted the comment!
I stand corrected. - GregorCZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I had a dream that looked exactly like that moon/night city landscape photo. I was paddling on a raft towards Austrailia. But it was darker.
Now it's my wallpaper :) - YoungDeezy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@alphaeta
If you're trying to quote Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds, it's "What if C-A-T really spelled dog?" - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow, if you didn't know better, you would've thought that was photoshopped to exaggerate the aurora... Impressive!
- sally00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because it is... there's the original version on the link.
- TobbisBlog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A wonderful place. I like it!
- technothrasher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the picture is a little boring. I think people just don't see many Aurora pictures. Having been up there in Alaska and seen this kind of Aurora, I can say that 1) the picture isn't doing it justice 2) Aurora pictures like this are a dime a dozen.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That and some human...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Not enough lesbians.
- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You like pictures of the sun? Here you go - http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/bestofsoho/bestofsoho.html
- jmeeter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I totally agree.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like the Aurora pic but the second photo (the homeless man and the shopping cart) is easily the best. Perfect composition and lighting, and meaningful. Like one of the Wiki comments said, it's not just a photograph, it's a story.
- Gracenotes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's a pity that this one only placed third:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Hoverflies_mating_midair.jpg
Much more interesting picture than merely the vague infinity of a sky, in my opinion. The photographer captured it after three strenuous days of shooting, keeping in mind that the insects were only about 10mm (~0.39 inches) long. In the words of a voter, it must have required a lot of stamina, from both the photographer and the hoverflies :)
The northern lights are beautiful, don't get me wrong. Surely I would imbibe, with awe, their august appearance *if* I were actually there. But this picture is by a Wikipedia contributor. It's unedited. It's exciting, and mildly amusing in concept. It's a matter of personal preference, really. Overall, kudos to everyone who took pics. (The ignited match is also one of my favorites.) - tydev417, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Jumba990
Oh, it's nature at it's most beautiful alright but the minute you see an aurora outside of the polar zones....**sees green glow in sky and hears buzzing sou - jmeeter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I honestly think they could have chosen a better picture...
- sally00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed.
- pcrobot, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Sweet pic!
- EerFoolWVU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Blue Sun can be seen here:

The brighter the blue on it, the hotter it as at that point - sally00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2OMG the eyeball.....
