- t0dd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18They should data mine the wiki site and automagically bring all of that information to the map.
- ma2dog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10great idea, great implementation
- TheComputerMutt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9That's a stupid mentaility. Yes, IE is the spawn of evil. However, in many cases people don't have a choice what browser they use, and you're disallowing them access.
- Pollack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6There is already a site which links wikipedia articles and google maps
http://www.placeopedia.com/ - mz00m, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7needs some serious work though...currently Statue of Liberty is described like this:
"Statue of Liberty
Given to the United States by France." - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Good info there. I was wondering what the hell was buried at the Torrington cemetary.
- drigz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm just glad I got to look before it made the front page... it won't handle that well at all.
The only flaw at the moment is that it doesn't have much content, but that is only a matter of time for something like this... - rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Really cool idea, extremely easy to add content!
Google handles most of the traffic, WikiMapia justs hosts the locations and text info. - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I can imagine the first edit wars. An entry by a guy who's lived in an area for 30 years and has a doctorate in geography gets flamed and edited out by two 15 year old kids who heard there was this mountain somewhere.
- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Tip- To quickly navigate switch to map mode and once you reach your target switch to satellite mode. Saves a lot of time and lag.
Nice to see the map is getting quickly populated, keep it up! - drigz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's just a flaw with the Google mapping data.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=14th+street,+calgary+alberta&ll=51.045738,-114.092975&spn=0.010064,0.029268&t=h&om=1
Nothing WikiMapia can do about that... - knylok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pretty, but I checked out Calgary (Alberta, Canada for those out of the loop), and found that up close, the streets didn't match up with the pics. Check out 14th street as it crosses the river. Waitamoment, there's no road there...
Needs work, but good idea. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It looks like you can also use this as a poor mans "world version" of MS Paint:
http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=34341168&x=-117453461&z=10&l=0&m=h - rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bravo! Let's all do that for our respective universities.
- jthunder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Again great idea, bad implementation - it seems like they are trying to recreate the information in wikipedia instead of just mining both sites.
Here's an idea of how maybe to implement properly - too bad I don't know how to do this.
Using the map interface level scrape the readable data from it (tags on the google map)
for each tag at that level, search wikipedia.
for each result from wikipedia, embed a pushpin/link that when clicked opens up a new tab with the wiki info.
Additionally:
create user addable tags to each map label/location and allow global searching of tags.
Even further, for each location also search flickr tags for the google map label (and user tags), and display results in separate browser tab. - tomhutchinson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Very cool. I've started working on the University of Pittsburgh (my school), if anyone else is a student and wants to help out, it would be great.
http://wikimapia.org/#y=40443289&x=-79957638&z=16&l=0&m=h - Marfanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Similar to http://platial.com but easier to use and no need to sign up. digg+
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like placeopedia.com better - A link to wikipedia is much more practical than just random thoughts about cool looking stuff (you can see that at http://googlesightseeing.com/)
- rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually on the places I checked, this site has more info than placeopedia.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Not the greeatest implementation. Not every object runs exactly north to south with 90 degree edges.
- rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what? where? Looks like this vandalism is gone already (hint: when you click on a place there's a link for "report for deletion").
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just did my contribution to the map.:)
But some problems:
(1) The search doesn't seem to work for me.
(2) Sloooow. Maybe just diggeffect, but still, very slow now.
(3) One must be able to rate other peoples push pins. Otherwise this service will fill up with junk. - Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that proves a point. It's still darn hard to vandalize (for extended periods of time) these kinds of things. =)
- Burgundavia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For a truly free map, I suggest you take a look at Open Street Map -- http://www.openstreetmap.org/
- CubiX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea. That's Google's problems, not wikimapia's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3There is a strange object already there too:
http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=34341168&x=-117453461&z=10&l=0&m=h
hmmm... - rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't believe no one had put The Alamo yet!
- testicles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@enfact
Get the ***** out you stupid spammer.. - thejokker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0interesting idea, but very short on actual data
- compwizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hmmm, someone labeled The Department of Treasury the "Whore House"
- loyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anybody know why these maps show more then the ones on maps.google.com
http://maps.google.com/?ll=29.774948,-95.533247&spn=0.004638,0.007317&om=1
http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=29774994&x=-95532646&z=17&l=0&m=m - kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lame. does not work in IE, the commonest browser out there.
- madmack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it seems the wiki has finally located the WMDs in Iraq. lol
- wassim2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love it! I already added a few places near me.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wikipedia would have the same problem, by your logic. The solution is an active community that removes such spam.
If you quickly and efficently remove spam, people tend to give up. Why waste your time if your ad won't be up for more than 5 minutes? - Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It is true that IE sucks, but many people may just want to take a look at what you have reall quick, not have to go and download a new browser and come all the way back..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this reminds me of www.mapbelleisle.com same kinda idea
- msklar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have developed a similar wikimap-style site that makes use of graphical icons to denote different locations. Check it out at http://www.stickymap.com/
My team has no illusions about "describing the Earth," but we want people to describe a lot of specific places in their neighborhoods. There are still a lot of features we have yet to add. I welcome your constructive feedback. - keithpk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A much better and more well established implementation of Google maps wiki in my opinion is TerraWiki: http://www.terrawiki.com
- ChrisGranger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google Earth already allows people to add placemarks with links and such. No Digg.
- Firemeboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1An active community is important, but I can't see any easy way to revert back to a previous version. In my opinion that is crucial to a successful wiki. Otherwise a well thought out description can be wiped out in a matter of seconds. Unless you can revert to the better version, you're going to have problems.
I agree with others, though, an excellent idea. - NoDakMAC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree, absolutely cool! I've been wishing for something like this for several months. I'll have to look into Placeopedia too, thanks. A great concept, and I'm happy with the result. Let's not all expect perfection on day-one, OK? After all, it appears they're doing this on a shoe-string budget with just 2 developers.
A couple thoughts...
Don't worry, it will be packed with data within days. We'll need a way to filter for restaurants, or parks, buildings, or other types of locations.
The search function doesn't seem to do anything - stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apparently the terrorists are onto this.
http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=38897611&x=-77036677&z=18&l=0&m=h - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1mz00m: I was under the impression that the statue of liberty was originally given as a gift by france. Are you questioning that piece of information with proof?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pac-man!
http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=51400042&x=-985025&z=19&l=0&m=h - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you deserve credit for your contributions.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So you're the one! I was just looking at that, I'm from near Pittsburgh too. I've been working on the Yough River Trail. Wish it showed grid coordinates, or had fields where we can mention them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's very nice and similar to something i was working on, osmap.org. It seems to work well. I'm curious if they have the place mark data available for download, or plan to, and in what format.
- compwizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I started working on my school Drexel University in Philadelphia. Come check it out.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Cool idea.. I think a rating system for each pushpin would be nice. Otherwise it'll be hard to wade through all the crap/spam that will inevitably show up.
