- Error601, on 02/01/2008, -0/+21I think the USB on the Logitech Harmony makes more sense unless it has some more Internet features than just device codes.
- limewood, on 02/01/2008, -0/+19it doesn't seem right when you're home remote is fancier (or as fancy) as your cell phone.
- thomashallock, on 02/01/2008, -0/+8set it and forget it. how often does the code list need to be updated?
- markross, on 02/01/2008, -0/+7Link to original story with actual information, as opposed to Engadgetspam:

As Error601 noted above, using wifi for just the codes is pretty much overkill, but they are actually implementing some other kind of neat applications that are all mentioned in the original article. - TheAstronomer, on 02/01/2008, -0/+6You sir, are an imbecile.
- phreak22, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4My Harmony rocks, I don't see the need for Wifi unless it has a program guide in it of something, but even at that. I have the program guide in my satellite receiver.
- Nick2632, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4Considering it looks about as fancy as most cell phones, not sure I'd want to be paying that much for, or even want to know the price for one. Hell, even the cell phone I have right now isn't WiFi-enabled.
- FoxOrian, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3I guess it was built for the home theater addict who is sitting at home depressed that he has no new toys to buy, having every component he already needs.
Now this remote gives that guy something to blow money on. I guess it has its purpose. - kodek, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3Yeah, but it's nice that some other companies are working on advanced universal remotes. I have a Harmony 890, and I love it, but the build quality is crap and I'm already on my 3rd remote from Logitech. I wish there were more competitors.
- fkr3, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3Actual link instead of engadget's silly little blurb:

Links engadget regurgitated:

http://www.windowsfordevices.com/news/NS9553546513 ... - supersteve, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2it's a ***** remote not a computer. I have a computer to do my computing and my remote to do my... remoting???
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2I'm not sure I understand the purpose of Wi-Fi. To pull up device codes? Okay, maybe if you're running from window to window in your apt. complex- but in your house? I think that might be overkill.
- scruffles, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2That just means cell phones have gotten too fancy. My cell phone makes calls and takes pictures... one more feature than I need. My remote can turn off my XBox, change the inputs on my TV and stereo, and turn on my satellite reciever with the press of a single button: "Watch TV". Most remotes can't do that. I have to ask, what good is a remote that doesn't have a "Watch TV" button?!?
- bentlk07, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2i have to agree
im just wondering why they dont just have the wifi to find the codes without the crap i reeeally dont need - Scatropolis, on 02/01/2008, -1/+3Maybe they should combine them. Imagine using your cell phone to control everything around your house. Some night when you're away and you want to record something just call up DVR and follow the instructions.
- surfacewound, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Really? That's strange. I've had a 670 for almost a year now; the build quality isn't superb or anything, but I certainly wouldn't call it crap. I've dropped it a few times (though never on a hard floor) and accidentally banged it into things countless times and it's held together quite well. I would've imagined the higher-end 890 would be at least on par.
Anyway, what I really want is a Bluetooh Harmony remote so I can seamlessly control my PS3 with it without the need for a USB IR device. - dext3r, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2lol k
- hddigger, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2This isn't anything special, or new. Ever heard of Logitech's Harmony remote line?
- phreak22, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Look at the Logitech Harmony, it's been available for years... not wifi, but USB.
- supermanred, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2I'd buy it. It would make a great remote. Get home, plug in the device and control the tv!
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -1/+3Pretty ugly, if you ask me. Looks almost like a cellphone.
- 80hd, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2I can imagine it. Some guy sitting around, programming this thing to use the internet so he doesn't have to program keys into it. Then the manufacturer pushes an update that ***** everything and it takes 3 hrs a day for a week of diving through forums before finding a solution that's more of a pain in the ass.
- Culero, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2With memory being as cheap as it is, why not have codes preloaded. Then have the remote to a brute force check....
- YodaJones, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2So far I think the Logitech Harmony series are the best universal remote controls on the market. I have the 880, but the newest one is even sweeter.
- supersteve, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2seems a bit over kill to me. Once the thing is all set up why would you ever really need the wifi? for those one or two times you want to change something? I have a logitech remote and after i got it all set up, i maybe plug it in once an a while to update but not enough to justify wifi build it. maybe bluetooth or something.
- counterplex, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1I want to play with VoiceXML to do this stuff. Unfortunately it requires modems that I can't afford atm :-/
- supermanred, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1They do look nice, I swore off logitech after I bought the 3rd keyboard that pissed me off...
Might have to reconsider my boycott! - supersteve, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1well said
- Bviper, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1So wait your telling me that a TV remote has built in flash support, but my iPhone doesn't?
But really thats quite cool, could see it replacing the arsenal of remotes I have. - LastDitchHero, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1I thought it was geeky enough to have a PDA phone, now a PDA Remote?
- popltree2, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Well, there is the Harmony remote...
- AaronCompNetSys, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1So if it has WiFi, what about controlling devices over WiFi.....
Like XBMC, which can be? Or all these services that can be iPhone powered? - thomashallock, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2that thing looks like a cell-phone design gone horribly wrong.
- culbeda, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Yeah, because cluttering the world with more IP enable devices, regardless of their utility, is the the path to nerdvana.
- yournamehere, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1did you read the article? wifi to pull down pertinent information about what you're viewing and built in guide.
- supermanred, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1I still say we should have one rule. If it can kick our ass or cut us in half, do NOT connect it to the internet or make it "Smart" technology.
- Matthew386x, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1One Word: Sweet!
- mogydy, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1I am using Psiloc remote control software on my Nokia N80. As my Nokia is wifi enabled, i am also able to update the codes from the internet
- linagee, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1The wifi is so it can be hacked into remotely.
- TRENT310, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1Remotes DO perform a brute force check. You can still enter the code if you know it, but most of them will scan through the codes if you hold down the power button until whatever you need to control starts turning on/off.
- ElectroBot, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1What would be better is if some company (Griffin/Belkin) came out with a dock-to-IR connector for the iPod Touch and iPhone and created a application for it that uses WiFi or EDGE to autoupdate/autobackup codes and settings. Use the touchscreen the same way that Apple uses the Home screen(s) with different pages (with a better/bigger button to switch between them) for different devices. If this device was about the size of a AA battery and cost around $50, I'd definitively buy it.
- culbeda, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1RE + TARD = You
Touchscreen only remotes blow. This is, in large part, why the Harmony remotes have done as well as they have. No expensive touch screen and buttons you can actually use in the dark. All that said, the WiFi is seemingly a pointless waste of battery power. I'd rather have bluetooh, optionally packaged with a transceiver so that I could potentially control my Wii and sync with my PC wirelessly. - 6zz6, on 11/23/2008, -0/+0thanks

http://www.saudiy.net - ps2pers0n, on 02/01/2008, -4/+4why is this on the front page? it's nothing more than an overpriced remote control.
- and303, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1I'm kind of annoyed that it is 2008 and this is the first solution other than punching in 400 different 4 digit numbers (if you're lucky enough to not have to brute force it).
- boomerxl, on 02/01/2008, -2/+1Your cell phone doesn't sound too fancy mate
- supermanred, on 02/01/2008, -2/+1That thing looks ugly, complicated, looks a lot like a ***** up celphone and it has windows on it.
It will fail at anything it tries, it is doomed.
I could see a touch-screen wifi enabled remote resembling an iphone being a hit, seeing as the interface could change depending on which of your living room devices you were controlling, with of course a few tactile buttons like channel up and down and volume down.... now that I would pay for! - mhmdkhamis, on 06/29/2008, -1/+0My Harmony rocks, I don't see the need for Wifi unless it has a program guide in it of something, but even at that. I have the program guide in my satellite receiver.
