- p0und, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45am i the only one who wishes people would stop posting retarded comments?
- quantumHobbit, on 10/12/2007, -8/+43Am I the only one who wishes he could shoot a lawyer when reading about these RIAA cases?
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36The title should read, "Why the RIAA just ***** itself."
- mozillaman0, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29Am I the only one that wishes the RIAA would just screw off?
- ybnormalman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19So wait. If the RIAA is promising these defendants that they will never sue again, does that mean the defendants can go pirate music risk free now?
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22ex·on·er·ate–verb (used with object)
1. to clear, as of an accusation; free from guilt or blame; exculpate: He was exonerated from the accusation of cheating.
2. to relieve, as from an obligation, duty, or task.
I didn't know what exonerate meant. Now i do. - LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Summary: RIAA is currently dropping cases they don't think they can win in such a way that says "We don't think you are innocent, but we will reneg the case, pay for your own fees".
If these lawsuits go through, the RIAA will be open to counter-suing so that the defendants can say "No, you pay our fees, and clear our name while you're at it". - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I'm Armenian. The Armenian equivalent would be Ardaratsnel. It means "to free" but i guess it could be used for guilt as well. Anyone else want to share?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The RIAA just sued 803 students in 23 Universities...They're going after people that can't afford to countersue...bastards.
- jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -1/+119 times out of 10 if you challenge the RIAA and threaten to take it to court they will fold.
It is often very difficult for them to prove the claims they make - which is why it often seems that they would rather avoid court.
The moral of the story is, if challenged by the RIAA, stand your ground. - Tenoq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The process is sickening, really.
1. Sue 1000 random people for alleged copyright infringement, offering them a 'deal' to not proceed with the charges against them (extortion?).
2. 990 people take the 'deal', and cough up money to the RIAA, whether or not they could prove it remains unknown.
3. 10 people challenge the RIAA to court.
4. RIAA backs out of court case (it has no evidence, never did), defendants paying their own legal fees.
So RIAA sends you a letter, and you have a choice: pay them money now, or pay lawyers money later. Your guilt or innocence is irrelevant, you're financially getting reamed either way. - quantumHobbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I think the Huns used similar tactics. They would approach a village and say, "We will attack and kill everyone unless you surrender, in which case we will only loot your village and move on." Most people surrender because they were so afraid of the Huns.
The difference here is that the Huns could back up their threat. We now know that if you're not a poor college student and can defend yourself, the RIAA will run away with its tail between its legs. - kingyubba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10you fight the battles you think you can win...
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm hoping one day they sue someone with a rich daddy and mommy who aren't afraid to fight.
Seems like when I was in college, there were plenty of those. - kingyubba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8die-uh-RIAA
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6thats what needs to happen is for some decent & honest judges to break it off in the RIAA's @$$ (make the RIAA face counter-suits for frivolous lawsuits)...
- NX910a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Funny, I thought exxonerate meant "to convert a business to one in an industry that willingly exploits its customers"
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"You guys giving them publicity on the internet buy digging this ***** up is just wrong."
Every regular here on digg already hates the RIAA. Outside of them, getting more people to hate them could only be a Good Thing. - kckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Certainly reads that way to me! Sounds like minimal startup costs for a new Napster doesn't it?
woot! - diulei, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"Am I the only one who wishes he could shoot a lawyer when reading about these RIAA cases?"
No way in hell you're the only one. - quantumHobbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, until the dart randomly hits their name in the phone book again. We all know that many of these cases seem to be randomly targeted with little evidence, which is why the RIAA typically backs down.
- Csma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What's RIAA"s next tactic since this one wont work much longer!
I can see it now, im sitting in my living room and I hear a pounding on my door
"It's the RIAA open up!" - robshoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4an RIAA thread and no one's said this yet? ...
***** THE RIAA! - omarciddo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm Hispanic. In Spanish the word is "exonerar", pretty similar to exonerate.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The RIAA is a corporation in the country friendliest to both frivolous lawsuits and corporations. I'm half surprised they haven't given the RIAA authority to autonomously detain and try suspects.
- kurtwinter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I believe that if the professors in the 23 universities were worth their meddle, the would provide legal support for their student bodies. Many faculties contain many JD's, plus many other expert witness types who could end the RIAA racket once and for all.

... in a secret tribunal perhaps??? - HCProgramr, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1That our legal system works on the presumption of innocent until proven guilty, not that a corporation throwing a temper tantrum can get whatever it wants.
You can't just point a finger, assume, and win. The accuser has to prove they've been wronged [or in criminal cases, that society has been wronged through committing a crime]. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah they can't be bothered to make music anymore.. more profitable to accuse innocent but stupid people of illegal downloads.. dumb person goes.. "gee golly, Sam, my computer downloads all kinds of jeheebez all the time.. maybe I am guilty.. I got no money and can't afford to go to court cos I might lose.. why don't I just pay them.". I wouldn't put it past them to make spyware that installs on your pc and downloads illegal songs when you go online so they can sue you.... oh wait they already did something similar.. all you folk defending the RIAA.. how can you defend putting spyware on your pc that makes it easy to hack thru a backdoor when you play your legally bought cd.. (that's never happended with the illegal music lol).. so the crime of stealing copyright it worse than actaully comming into my house and breaking my possestions... um??

- cayennenator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Sounds interesting... I couldn't see any graphics in IE7 or FF.
- tbr126, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh... one more thing... RIAA.. if you are scanning this, look me up I have a few words for you.
- tbr126, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Oh hell, let the weakling RIAA scare the hell out of all those god-fearing f(uc)(ol)ks. Are u skared cletus? Mee too. Them big city lawyers is gonna git us all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I am going to make a big party at my house when the government brings the RIAA and MPAA to a screeching halt and make them pay.
All diggers invited!!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0don't worry, the RIAA wont sue, the MPAA will.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1RTFA. The RIAA doesn't pursue persistent people because they can't afford some screwball judge ruling against them. Your conclusion is right though, that if you waste your money on a lawyer instead of paying htem their settlement, the case may be dropped.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Why try defending guilty people? What does that prove?
- fallenearth8, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0any chance anyone can understand and summarize this i just read this and all i understood was RIAA
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1What legal system?
If you cannot afford a lawyer you have NO access to the federal kangaroo courts.
By the poor for the rich............. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3For one thing absolutely nothing works against the RIAA at all.
The government is broken to let this happen in the first place.
They have proven to get their money back and then some.
You guys giving them publicity on the internet buy digging this ***** up is just wrong.
They don't care if they loose and they at this point cannot be stopped by anyone.
Want to mess with the RIAA ***** ......
go get as many torrents as possible and make everything shareable....... if they are doing nothing to help the industry they will loose. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1MP3 Police Units.
They can use the patriot act to bulldoze your house on the mere suspicion of infringement.
They can detain you in Guantanamo Bay Cuba and subject you to the newly legal torture methods the "Proud Christian" President George Bush introduced.
