- AmyVernon, on 08/11/2008, -3/+17Finally, someone said what I've been wondering!
- brainnovate, on 08/11/2008, -1/+14Blogs and LinkedIn are where its at these days, especially for tech workers!
- planet87, on 08/11/2008, -0/+7It's all gonna depend on who you have to impress and what's important to them. That's the most important thing to know... and of course networking always helps.
- upick, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5Could also be due to the fact that your job is worth peanuts when your company decides to outsource to India.. That' when you get jobless
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -1/+6because there are no jobs, duh?
- bixby1, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5I find that most companies are getting lazy with due dilligence as well. I graduated from Harvard...i think.
- eMaster101, on 08/11/2008, -2/+7I think networking and making great connections is the best way to meet new people in any industry. It's not how skilled you are, but who you know!
- jboitnott, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3When dealing with recent job upheaval Linkedin made it possible for me to not actually send a resume to anyone. All my bosses were on it -- that and Plaxo.
- jboitnott, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3I don't use any for video - but I know for TV reporters trying to peddle their resume tapes - there are sites that store your video resume. TVJobs.com is one of them I think.
- sungoddess808, on 08/11/2008, -2/+5That's a great way to show-off your talent.
- louiebaur, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3There ARE jobs out there -- but less than before -- and that's what makes standing out more important. Also resumes don't show people's abilities or personality the way developing relationships with possible employers does.
- Michaelabehsera, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Yes agree ive droped the resumes a long time ago I have case studies now and a web site.
- mikoto1610, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3While I agree with certain points in your post, I’d also say that this approach would only ring true with web-savvy or online-led companies and organizations.
Traditional brick-and-mortar companies (yes, they DO still exist!) will still go for a strong resume over a Powerpoint or blog (everyone has one - just like resumes…).
You have to adapt your appraoch to the medium you’re looking to find employment in (which I believe you’re trying to say). If this is web or tech-savvy companies, go for the different approach - if it’s more traditional industries, a well-written resume will win out.
And keep in mind that not all HR people have the time to sit through non-important Powerpoint presentations or look through someone’s blog to find out what kind of person they are. Skimming through bullet-point achievements on a resume offers a quicker option than having to click through a Powerpoint slide. - danib3, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3The importance of a resume definitely depends on the employer, but taking your resume beyond the traditional piece of paper can be quite powerful -- in my opinion, its not time to throw it out just yet, only adapt it!
- bluezombie, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3That's nice. But to reach that hiring manager, first you have to get past HR. You'll need a resume for that.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -2/+4useful inforamtion. thank you
- skywalker954, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2Video resumes are fine - but I think it depends on the type of job. For a model, public speaker, or HR person - someone who needs a strong image/people skills, sure -- for a tech geek...prob not! Although it sounds like an interesting way to stand out and get someone's attention.
- tjClassic82, on 08/11/2008, -3/+5Standing out is very important. Showcasing your abilities is important. You can tell someone what you're all about. or you can SHOW someone what you're all about.
If you tell me you can kick me ass on a really fancy piece of paper... doesn't do much to me.
If you show me (preferably on video) of your abilities to kick someones ass, I'll believe you! - RevLoki, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2I approve of this product and/or service.
- Angstcorner, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Interesting!
Incidentally I came across a is a survey to know how secure my job is in the next 6 months.Found it in a website www.angstcorner.com .It's called Job Compass.Worth a visit! - Gemfinder, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2Good to know. I have a skills resumé and in a soft economy, those don't get you very far. Several times, I've wished I could show a potential employer *what* I can do instead of what I did, when, and where.
- ManicA, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1congratulations on missing your chance to do something
- ritubpant, on 08/11/2008, -4/+4pretty meaningful article on why resume is becoming meaningless ;-)
- Diggelichous, on 08/11/2008, -3/+1I agree!!
Great article, thanks for sharing jboitnott :)
