(skip the first minute but it will be well worth the watch) - Jack8274, on 08/24/2008, -2/+31They really got lucky by snatching that one.
- bigcynic, on 08/24/2008, -0/+24Yahoo really is popular in Japan. Going there and hearing people talk about "I looked this up on Yahoo" etc. is like stepping back in time. But sell it "as a quick fix to appease angry shareholders in the U.S."? Ah, that's classic shortsighted American business management!
- hitkaiser, on 08/24/2008, -0/+22Yeah flickr is decent
- inactive, on 08/24/2008, -3/+22Are you crazy? How is that easier? I can't read a single thing on that site!
- mlwarrior, on 08/24/2008, -0/+18There is another point that this article missed, and it's that Japanese are very loyal to brands. Japanese people will pick a brand for grocery stores, cars, a news sources, or yes, even websites, and stick with it for ever. Historically, the Japanese are fiercely loyal the their daimyo, maybe that has something to do with it. The country has one of the lowest piracy rates in the world, and this is just for software. (see reference below).
My fiance is Japanese. She, and all her friends use yahoo japan, not just for e-mail, but as a hub for the entire internet. When we travel to Japan, she and her mother will go out of their way to shop at the rice cracker store across town, and this is Tokyo, so that's about 30 miles across town. We always go to the same Karaoke shop, even if the prices fall at another shop.
Google is going to have to do something really spectacular to win over the Japanese. This was an interesting article though. The bit about liking the "complicated" interface is really true. For some reason, Japanese people like to be bombarded with data in everyday life. Contrast that with the very simple style of their art.

- 808ethan, on 08/24/2008, -0/+12More people are dumb than smart.
Its one of the most powerful and fundamental laws of humanity and in a democratic capitalist society, it affects everything.
The bell curve finally stops expanding somewhere below someone you can't comprehend and just above clinically retarded. - inactive, on 08/24/2008, -2/+13Great idea: Selling its most profitable asset. Classic.
- isntreal, on 08/24/2008, -4/+15Apparently you don't know about google's customized homepage... you can add countless widgets (weather, news, google email, even top digg stories), organize them in any way you like and even theme it.
- 808ethan, on 08/24/2008, -0/+10If Yahoo USA managed to offer 100 Mb/s broadband for $40/mo and gave you a free wireless router and PSP for signing up, I think they would be doing well too!
100% serious, American ISPs are like OPEC, a giant monopoly pushing everyone to pay more for less. - diemunkiesdie, on 08/24/2008, -0/+10I do know about it! But I like the Yahoo! version, especially because I like their news service. Also, Google's customizations may allow you to select what you want to see, but I feel like it gets too cluttered (I like to see News, Entertainment, Sports, etc. all at once). Google gives each one as a tab also, but it has to navigate to a new page when you click on each one. In Yahoo! the tabs switch the frame in the same page so its more user friendly. Also, I don't like the sizes of the boxes on Google while I do like the Yahoo! sizes. Since I am used to using the Yahoo! page, I see no reason to switch because I can easily use Google's search directly from my FF search box. I feel like I am getting the best of both worlds and I am not hurting anyone, so why digg me down?
- hpbucks, on 08/24/2008, -0/+9yea - over 500 million visits a year
- AlekNovi, on 08/24/2008, -0/+9Lol, why did this guy get dugg down for saying he prefers yahoo? Its called taste. Not everyone needs to have a good one ;)
And... the main point here is that yahoo is a portal. Google's i-google is just a mashup service with widgets. Not quite the same thing. - yetAnotherCroc, on 08/24/2008, -0/+8Crap.. I suck at commenting
- oveedrx, on 08/24/2008, -2/+10get with the times.. I'm still on Netscape navigator
- sockpuppets, on 08/24/2008, -0/+7You won a red thumb!
- mlwarrior, on 08/24/2008, -0/+6I know you're sort of joking, but I only mentioned it because it was highly relevant.

- Bluenoise, on 08/24/2008, -0/+53. Do Business The Japanese Way: A Finger In Every Pie
...so this is yahoo's secret! - morningmatters, on 08/24/2008, -0/+6I was in Japan when Yahoo was promoting itself as an ISP. They would have these promotion people outside of train stations with these cool white Yahoo overcoats. I have always wanted the coat.
- positron, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5I have a feeling that search is probably the least used feature of Yahoo Japan. For Japanese searches, most people I know use Goo. Much better than Yahoo Japan imho. Yahoo still has all the cool portal services and stuff like みんなのトピックス though which makes it indispensable.
- Darkaged, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5Yes.
- Nouman6, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5wow, I still expected to read about how it can't top google but it seems like it does in Japan.
Interesting article. - mlwarrior, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4I know that I will always be a foreigner in Japan. I'm not Japanese. That's the definition of foreigner. I don't want to be Japanese, I'm a white American, and I enjoy it.
Everyone talks about everyone behind their backs. You're doing it right now about Japan. If you mean that they speak about me in Japanese, that has never been the case. I've studied Japanese for 10 years, and I'm totally fluent. お前はどう? 他の言語が話せる? I got a major in it, and my school has the second best Japanese program in America. I triple majored in biochem, molecular biology and Japanese. I think you've got a case of angry asian man syndrome. Asian women sleep with me, for the same reason that white women sleep with me. I'm a good guy.
What's your problem with Japan, anyway? - MrViklund, on 08/24/2008, -0/+4Yahoo Japan is a part of Yahoo is it not?
- Scottievm, on 08/24/2008, -0/+4Well according to the article, Yahoo owns a 33% stake in it, while a Japanese company named SoftBank owns 40%. They also appear to trade separately, so based on that, I'd guess that Yahoo Japan is not a part of Yahoo.
- JKAL, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3I find it funny how most white people who go to Japan feel the same way,
Now, you know how a brown, yellow, black or red person feels everyday in the US, Canada, Australia, England, NZ et al. - isntreal, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3fair enough
- petska, on 08/24/2008, -1/+4Google is one of the main reasons it's only worth 27 Billion
- inactive, on 08/24/2008, -3/+6Soulja Boy sucks.
- ScientistBlah, on 08/24/2008, -8/+11I think I just lost faith in humanity. More people visit Yahoo than Google? WTF!
- CHAD3814, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3And Softbank does (or at least did when I worked at Yahoo) have a big steak of the US Yahoo. Basically they forced yahoo to let them start yahoo japan back in '97 or '98, then they forced yahoo to later invest into it, and we (the us yahoo) had to share all our code with them, and help them use it to integrate. It was ridiculous, but I guess it paid off for them in the end ;)
- mlwarrior, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4An idiot on digg.
Notice how I didn't say "wow". - DforSpiD, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Someone gave a hard gay surprise to a friend of mine a while back:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loefdsOu4A4 - akky, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Japanese brand loyality different from US?
As a Japanese, I have been wondering why people in the bay area keep using Craigslist and never tried newcomers. I like Craigslist's simplicity and US people should not be described "brand loyal" by supporting the older launched service. - diemunkiesdie, on 08/24/2008, -4/+6I have Yahoo! as my homepage because it has news and weather on the same page. I search using Google through my built in Firefox search bar. Yahoo! is best as a home page, but that doesn't mean people are using it for search.
- mlwarrior, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2But I don't feel that way.
- mlwarrior, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2Sorry, but you haven't communicated a point.
- cjFace, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2Go Go Yahoo....
oh wait, i'm a few years late ;) - Vuredel, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Honestly, Yahoo! and Yahoo! Japan look extremely similar in layout to me, although Yahoo! Japan does have a kickass dictionary. (http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/) The only thing that bugs me is that I can't use my usual Yahoo! account with Yahoo! Japan. =(
- navster15, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2I don't get what the big deal is about Yahoo Japan's layout. Yahoo Canada's site is pretty much the exact same layout and I still think Google is better. Is there something inherent in Japanese culture that makes them prefer Yahoo?
- Muler36, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2it does in the US too?
- flarn2006, on 08/24/2008, -1/+3hey i was just about to make a netscape joke
- laguano, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2Softbank is awesome, i so wish i could get a keitai from them.
- dengzhi, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2hilarious
- theskyisblue, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1no one cares; yahoo is a failure as a search engine
- cloudcity, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11. Quick, sell the profitable business to delay the demise of our crappy business by a year or two!
2. Profit?
Having said that, I love Yahoo fantasy baseball. -
