- soloride, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6 Puts a whole new meaning on your server getting hammered. The buzz effect: 2 million unique hits in 2 hours. Of course your chances of getting to the front page of yahoo sounds like it will almost be impossible.
- inactive, on 02/28/2008, -0/+5Besides the functionality, competition is a good thing for social news. I personally get this feel like Digg isn't innovating on the social news front because there isn't a whole lot of competition. There are so many creative ideas that I (or any number of diggers) could probably put forward to make Digg a better social news site! Buzz might tug away at some of the Digg audience and eventually force Digg to get fired up about being numero uno. Even if the demographics or target audience isn't the same, it'll give all social media sites a reason to continue improving, hopefully sooner rather than later.
- gbarberi, on 02/27/2008, -1/+6Good post, Mu. Not every Social News site needs to be setup/function exactly like Digg. Constant cloning of Digg would only stifle innovation in Social New Sites. Besides, it gives Digg greater pressure to perform well when there are sites that offer difference, not similarity.
And, there is a big difference between Social News and Social Bookmarking. Del.icio.us is not a social news site as much as Digg is not a social bookmarking site. Yahoo Buzz will certainly not conflict with Del.icio.us. Besides, I'm happy to see Buzz as it will keep Yahoo from modifying Del.icio.us to become a social news site. - inactive, on 02/28/2008, -0/+5Never say Never.
- twitchr, on 02/28/2008, -1/+4wow. not even close!
- jarvis400, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2I see this much like Newsvine. Only Yahoo's version is uglier. And you must be pre-approwed to submit news. And you can't comment the news.
- ramong, on 02/28/2008, -1/+3Well if you can`t submit stories, it can be considered "competition"
- doctechnical, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2FTA: "This is a guest post by Muhammad Saleem, a social media consultant and a top-ranked community member on multiple social news sites."
Top-ranked? Damn, I didn't know we were keeping score! How does my Slashdot karma work into the rankings...? - gbarberi, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2"It means that the news stories that make it to the top will acurate" -- I doubt it. The site just needs to display Yahoo ads. That has nothing to do with accuracy.
- Himself, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1shhhh don't upset the G4 fanbois
- MyNameIsJoe, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2Well I like the idea that sites have to be preaproved to get there content on Buzz. It means that the news stories that make it to the top will acurate and they will actually be news as opposed to a top ten list of the best video games of all time.
Digg is more of a portal for finding cool sites and interesting articles than a news site. Buzz is going to be a site to get the news that people think is important or interesting. - lyderaly, on 02/28/2008, -0/+0something else to keep me busy while I wait for work to be over!
- Notyavgkat, on 02/28/2008, -2/+2Is it true that we can't submit stories to Buzz ? if so that sucks
- inactive, on 02/28/2008, -2/+2As a Yahoo Publisher, I'm pretty excited about this. I can't imagine anything being quite like the "Digg surge", but Yahoo has the audience and resources to create a damned good social news site. I just took another look at it and have to agree that Buzz seems to be going places. Good design, I wonder if the Buzz launch means the Yahoo Publisher Network will be coming out of beta soon?
- socialismEVIL, on 02/27/2008, -11/+4"digg clone" ?? hahaha!
