- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+32Oh they try! I can't wait until google gets the 700Mhz Spectrum... but it'll be qutie a fight.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 12/12/2007, -2/+18Um, because it would be really cheap to do -- and some large company with money to give politicians couldn't make a lot of money.
The Telcos have blocked cities from setting up FREE internet access so that everyone can get on the web -- very important to stay informed these days.
Do we really need every last thing to be a source of profit? Don't we want some basic standards (that keep improving) and that those of us with extra money can buy better? I really don't care that I might pay for fast internet while someone gets free.
The same reason we don't have every household in a city with internet access is the same reason we don't have open WiMax. You don't need a cell phone infrastructure. You could have WiMax everywhere and just use Skype -- no switches, no fees. The cities or businesses in an area could shot start popping up hotspots like mushrooms. Pretty soon you would have all the largest populated areas covered -- and that would mean an inability for someone to control access and charge. - stutimandal, on 12/12/2007, -0/+14Google 700Mhz with Open-Source Android apps will rescue us, hopefully!
- Godlike, on 12/12/2007, -10/+22Hooray for capitalism, I just love living in a society where the whims of corporations vastly outweigh not only the voice of the people but the advancement of our technology and its supporting infrastructure. I feel so free right now... *tear*
- halligan00, on 12/13/2007, -0/+11Learn the commons man.
Towers: private. Spectrum: commonwealth.
Oil Well: private. Oilfield: Commonwealth.
Mine: private. Ore: Commonwealth.
Power Plant: private Clean Atmosphere: Commonwealth.
Refinery: private. Clean Rivers: Commonwealth. - MadEnvoy, on 12/13/2007, -1/+8Can't have that! Might lead to other freedoms, like freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom fries and freeware.
- stutimandal, on 12/12/2007, -2/+9Godlike ... In capitalism there will always be some player (like Google) which will come up with a better business plan and better service for customers. It is still better than socialism where you have no options.
- acidbass, on 12/12/2007, -2/+9Umm.....Unbridled greed for wealth?
Thats usually the answer to 99% of "why the world sucks" questions. - Typhoon2009, on 12/13/2007, -1/+8I wish US carriers worked like the ones in the EU. You know, full Bluetooth functionality without having to pay the carrier to have those features enabled.
- Murdats, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6sure, you only have to wait 20+ years for it to happen
- p57098, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6Why have wireless plans been the same cost for the past 5 or so years? Still pay for text messages to send AND receive.
- adml_shake, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6We hope. For all we know they could pull a senator palpatine on us.
- Aero347, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Why are they blocking new services? because they can
- homesickalien, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5I don't know why anyone should be paying long distance fees at all. Since broadband internet has become commonplace, communication has become global and should not recognize any type of borders. I've got Skype running on my Nintendo DS and although it's not always easy to get a wireless signal, it's just a matter of time before the real backlash against the major telcos begins.
- KyjL, on 12/13/2007, -4/+9Replace "capitalism" and "corporations" with "communism" and "government" and your statement would make sense.
- starkruzr, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4No, one word: failure of the market. Laissez-faire capitalism only works when there are roughly the same number of producers and consumers. There are, what, 8 cell phone companies and how many consumers?
- Phantom784, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2I'm glad this article told me how to make free international calls with rebtel and now I never have to pay again :)
- Twee, on 12/13/2007, -1/+3Um, from the sound of it they are only blocking these "short code" text messages. I could care less if they block these short code text messages. Why? Because the only ones I can think of are advertised on TV for ringtone subscription services that rip people off by charging them $10/month.
- KyjL, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2Because we like to see a clean comment board...?
- sparkysko, on 12/13/2007, -1/+3No. Free Market capitalism works when the government gets its sticky little paws out of controlling the market. Get rid of the FCC, and see what type of wireless networks we'll have.
Somalia is an excellent example of the cell phone networks that can exist without any government.
The US Government imposes monopolies on spectrum, reducing competition and driving prices up. - Murdats, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2because those are our only 2 choices EVER!!!!
what we have now, or starve with your family being raped in a war ravaged poverty stricken wasteland, there are no other choices.
try thinking in more then black and white, good and bad, simple basic thinking that is the realm of children.
I am so sick of this argument and its a logical fallicy, why couldnt we. I dont know use a combination of systems rather then take an extremist stance and declare that the only other option is a polar extremist stance and that it will destroy all life as we know it? - williamdyer, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Actually, with smart radios, you could treat the whole EM spectrum like it was the ISM band: No auctions, no limits on bandwidth. Just radios that know to get out of each others' way.
- Bamborzled, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1For some strange reason they use MS Sans Serif, by the looks of it. That font never works with ClearType.
- jabrthel, on 12/13/2007, -1/+2comment buried... started off mediocre, but then launched into an attack using sophist techniques.
- starkruzr, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Er, four words :)
- HonoredMule, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Um, I'm not referring to any historic event. I'm referring to "eradicat[ing] all the stupid consumers who will promote the success of sleazy, underhanded business models/practices/corporations."
Which pretty well foretells the end of the human race. - Ellipsys, on 12/13/2007, -1/+2Agreed. Profit needs to take a back seat to progress at times. This is one of those times. As is Medicine for that matter.
- vypergts, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1It's not all bad. Overseas, advertisements with short code promotions are like spam for television...only worse. I say good riddance.
- jabrthel, on 12/13/2007, -1/+2This thread is filled with dignifying comments, so I might as well add my own. *****, *****, crap, *****, *****, and etc.. Wow! I feel like I'm actually having a fruitful conversation that people can contribute to!! We're really advancing our arguments to the limit of logic and reason!!! I'm sure we'll be able to reach some sort of consensus or at least let bygones be bygones and not get too emotionally attached to an idea!!! So let me continue my reasoning for supporting MY IDEA. *****, *****, *****! You see how ***** is sandwiched between *****, that's the cornerstone of my logic... can't you see?
buried every comment in this thread (including mine if it were possible) do to their uselessness and use of sophistry. - acidbass, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1you want greed? make laws against having children, then you need the govt to allow you to have kids in that world, if not?
you want ppl to just have kids how ever they want? then you have got to take care of all of them... Which is the world i want to live in.
And we can take care of all of them if we can somehow reduce the greed for excessive wealth.
Wealth is ok, i dont mean , everyone be a hippy. But cmon, hummer limos with bath tubs while 40 million go without health care. something is wrong with that picture. If that doesnt define greed, then nothing will. - fuzzmeister, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1On another note, does ZDNet text not work with ClearType for anyone else? It looks awful on my LCD.
- jabrthel, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1@HonoredMule... as to the genocide, I believe you're referring to another African nation. Genocide hasn't occurred in Somalia since the early 90's.
- Atomic1fire, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1your forgetting that the eu is more controling to businesses
- jabrthel, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1That doesn't make much sense. That leads to the conclusion that laissez-fare capitalism fails in every case... which you might actually be trying to imply, but I'm not sure that's what you meant. Anyway, it would be insane to require that their be roughly the same number of producers as consumers. The U.S. has a population of about 300 million people. Everyone of those people consume wheat. Except, maybe, those with an unfortunate allergy to it. By your statement, a market for wheat would only work with 300 million producers. Those people also consume sugar, apples, tv's, cars, and so on. Your logic would require their exist more producers of goods than their exists people.
- Tenoq, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Well if it's working... :P
- ArmedandDWI, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1What is the advantage for the consumer for using "short codes" as opposed to regular destination numbers? What is the advantage to the competition?
- Atomic1fire, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1do they need to do whatever people want
no because they are a business they work for profits
how they achieve those profits is entirely up to them
see google as compared to att - Tenoq, on 12/13/2007, -1/+2No, KyiL, his statement makes perfect sense as it is. As does your substituted version. Both ends of the scale have some nasty side-effects. Corporate power outweighs democratic power in the US now.
- Tenoq, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Techies don't get higher wages. :(
- Tenoq, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Free market rarely works in that manner when you're talking about monopoly or oligopoly infrastructure businesses. We've tried free market in Australia for our broadband. Which is why it hasn't improved significantly in the last 5 years. Sure, there's a few locations of cherry-picked ADSL2+, but rural and regional customers are basically screwed, and always will be without government support or intervention. There is no business case to connect a farmer to broadband. :p
- acidbass, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1correction, excessive wealth.
Ill take a world with people generally wealthy, you are right. - Atomic1fire, on 12/13/2007, -1/+1except your forgetting that in soviat russia you have other shortages such as food and supplies
would you rather have everyone gets everything and then gets lazy and techies dont get higher wages for their importance in society such as the internet, business profits and thus the economy and education
instead of our america - mjw2025, on 12/15/2007, -0/+0Your definition has nothing to do with greed but rather control.
- Atomic1fire, on 12/13/2007, -1/+1french of the press
french of speech
french fires
and frenchware? - HonoredMule, on 12/13/2007, -1/+1You can't get rid of government intervention such as the FCC completely unless you're also willing to eradicate all the stupid consumers who will promote the success of sleazy, underhanded business models/practices/corporations.
But I don't think the situation calls for genocide.
(And you can hardly expect what works in Somalia to work in North America.) - YourRights, on 12/13/2007, -0/+0Check out http://your-rights.com/news/wireless

is one cood example of open access community wireless. - Ellipsys, on 12/13/2007, -3/+2Okay, I would like you to identify why you think that Capitalism and Corporations are NOT doing what the parent posted said? Are we not in a civilization now where your apparent gods of corporations and capitalism reign, instead of "communism" and "government"? Is the use of our wireless technology not held back simply because corporations wish to make a profit? What are you objecting to, or are you just some libertarian puppet who regurgitates "OMG THE FREE MARKET IS THREATENED BY POOR COLORED PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TAKE MY MONEY AND BUY CRACK" at every turn?
- jabrthel, on 12/13/2007, -2/+1I agree with mjw2025, describe greed. Then describe wealth.
I think everyone would agree that forcing others to do things with their life for your benefit when they don't want to is greedy. So then, if what they do with their life is to build up and/or gain control of a large company that provides cellular service, is it greedy to demand that they use their life's work for your purposes? So long as they attained their goals through contracts which had the consent of all parties involved, I would say that is greedy. It's not like these corporations stole property through the use of force... it's not even like these companies are forcing you to buy their services. Yes, what you ask for them to do might be better for you, but it is their decision... you weren't the one who spent the time to buy and/or build up the company, so the only right you have is the right not to buy what the company sells.
What is wealth then? Is it just the amount of cash you have, or is the amount of things you own? Maybe it's just the amount of free-time you have... maybe it's something else entirely. Everyone has their own definition of wealth, and most of the time that definition includes a combination of factors. So when you suggest that the pursuit of wealth is what makes the world crappy, it sounds to me that you have a problem with people pursuing their own happiness. Some find that through a new yacht or a CEO title, others find it through sacrificing their professional goals by being able to live in the same town with their family... either way it's their decision to pursue that goal in a manner they see fit, not yours or anyone else's. -
