Why Twitter Matters
businessweek.com — Can the fledgling microblogging service become a social media powerhouse to rival giants like Facebook—or will it be gobbled up?

- thedzigner, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3It'll not replace any other service. It's not designed to.
Twitter is in it's own niche, and there it is untouchable. - theDrizzle, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3I think it will become a near essential tool in the business world, as the ability to distribute information instantly becomes more and more important. Also, services that come out of twitter, such as ones that can locate trends and identify customer interests, will likely become a heavy driving forces in the way many businesses advertise.
- Accolade1, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2I'm intrigued by what twitter offers, but I've never used it. It seems to be a great way to get the message out for times when you don't have access to a computer, but with a flood of miniature messages, how does the system sort out the meaningful messages from the pointless ones? If anyone here uses Twitter, leave some feedback.
- str1fe, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1The system doesn't sort out the meaningful from the pointless. It really doesn't even try too hard. Don't get me wrong, it's a good service, just don't set notifications of people who like to detail their every move. "Having coffee at Starbucks this morning" is fine, but I've seen separate tweets for "I'm about to drive to Starbucks" "Pulling into Starbucks now" "Ordering a coffee now, maybe with extra whip" ... you get the idea.
- fusen, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1I don't see how they can stay afloat, in the UK at least, you do not pay for receiving SMS messages so twitter must be paying a fair amount each month on their bills to support the huge amount of free SMS's being sent.
To be honest, I only see the "web2.0"/"internet celebrities" using the site, e.g. majority of people on kevin roses' following list.
No one outside that little circle seems to use it - WhatALegend, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0I think . .it COULD be great.
At the moment you log in to read peoples complaints or just the most pointless things. Maybe try to sort the layout to looks poor.
I would also say I do however have a twitter 'cos well it seemed like I had to try it before I critcised it.
