- digitaldivinci, on 08/10/2008, -7/+36Personally, I wish I had more real friends that used Twitter, that would completely sell me on it. I wouldn't mind seeing what someone is doing at 4,5, 5:30. It doesn't bother me. If I accept them as a friend, I should care what they have to say.
I know I try to make mine useful, but still, until a larger percentage of people use it, it will always be on the verge of uselessness.
EDIT: shameless plug to Follow thuff on twitter :) - aaabatteries, on 08/11/2008, -4/+28"What are you doing?"
I am pooping right now and trolling the comments section of Digg. - jgatz, on 08/11/2008, -2/+18the problem with these networks is that nobody i know away from the computer uses them
I mean sure, I could build a list of bloggers but who else??? - aaabatteries, on 08/11/2008, -2/+15Yes.
- tr909, on 08/11/2008, -2/+14I think Twitter and Facebook status is more for the poster than the reader. It gives people the false feeling that there is an audience out there that gives a ***** what they are doing.
- NotOptium, on 08/11/2008, -1/+13At the same time?
- MaryCait, on 08/11/2008, -1/+12If it makes me feel special when my cell phone vibrates, so what?
- Callik, on 08/11/2008, -2/+8Hasn't failed yet cause it's the latest 'thing'.
When a new 'thing' comes along it will lose interest and momentum, like MySpace has and Facebook is currently. - Rotzooi, on 08/11/2008, -19/+24Twitter = lame
- AirRaven, on 08/11/2008, -8/+13I'm at a loss as to understanding what possible advantage Twitte could hold for most people over Facebook's status updates.
Put simply, nobody *cares*. - atanguay, on 08/11/2008, -1/+6Twitter is puppy chow for the severe ADD generation.
Twitter not only encourages a lack of deep thought...it goes so far as to prevent it with their per Twit character limit. - endacrowley, on 08/11/2008, -2/+7I wholeheartedly agree. Its a fantastic service.
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5They have no revenue model. Not even a hint of one. Enjoy it while it lasts.
- lorductape, on 08/11/2008, -2/+7you don't understand twitter until you have 10 of your friends using it via text and you can have hilarious back and forth conversations over it... then you get it.
- jfitz369, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5Twitter is a microblogging medium that allows people to update/follow via SMS. In other words, if something cool is going on or if something bad is going on you can update your followers or learn about it by following others... almost in real time. If that's not your thing then don't worry about it. As an info junky, I think it's cool.
- SublimeRuin, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4Because Twitter has accessibility that Facebook does not. And Twitter does not require the same time commitment that things like MySpace and Facebook do.
- Chaotix, on 08/11/2008, -8/+12I honestly don't see the point of Twitter.
- Otto, on 08/11/2008, -1/+5Twitter has the ability to subscribe to other people's feeds and have them sent to your cell phone, if you happen to be so inclined. Also it's easier to text to, and easier to reply to other people. Status feeds in facebook serve a different purpose.
- bwishey, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4That's why you get the Twitter app and set it to automatically update your Facebook status...
- phrenzy, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4Here's the problem. I don't have friends.
- KaivenTor, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Twitter does have it's uses. Microblogging is probably just going to continue to be more and more popular, especially as the internet ADD really sets in.
Twitter is also a study in how an easy to use API can help determine how popular your service can be compared to someone else's. Sure Facebook status is built into the FB API, but it's easier to build an app around Twitter because you don't have to worry about all the extra crap that FaceBook makes you deal with. Throw in the mobile posting and it's pretty easy to see why Twitter has gotten more and more popular. - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2So what are Facebook's status updates then?
I repeat, all my friends use Facebook and their status updates, and I know maybe one or two people who use Twitter. - Klisk, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2I don't know anyone who uses Twitter OR Facebook. Seriously. No one in my real life uses these services, and I'm 24. Most people I know are generally uninterested in computers to begin with. They care more about watching adult swim and playing xbox, a computer is a waste of time. It's hard to even convince them to use google or email. It's all about text messaging directly on their phones.
I'm a twitter user, but all of my contacts are bloggers that never friend me back. So I update and talk every day on twitter... To myself. - FredFredrickson, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3How are people supposed to have a life and get out and do things that are meaningful if they are constantly worried about updating their Twitter status to tell people what they are doing?
It's like the dad who spends so much time behind the handheld video cam recording the progress of his child's life that he doesn't get any time to actually take part in the development of the child. - jbenson2, on 08/10/2008, -4/+6Outage du jour - perfect description of Twitter
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -2/+4Agreed.
All my friends use Facebook. Virtually no one uses Twitter. Why switch? - TreatsTheBear, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2You don't have to be friends with somebody to follow them, so it works better for blog type entries, even though most people still seem to use it for personal stuff that nobody really cares about.
- FredFredrickson, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2I completely agree!
- SublimeRuin, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2I agree
- SublimeRuin, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3Great quotes found on twitter - http://digg.com/comedy/Top_11_things_Overheard_on_ ...
- Whitey07, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2I quite like Twitter, I don't see the problem with "if you don't like it, don't use it". I can see the dislike for it.
- SublimeRuin, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2Twitterberry for blackberry, dashboard Mac Widgets, Windows Widgets, FF exts, a decent mobile site and SMS Text Messaging.
The biggest one there being the SMS feature. With Twitter there is nothing more to it than just your 140 character message, with Facebook there are A LOT more things to do, meaning that to keep up-to-date on Facebook you NEED to use some sort of Facebook app or visit the website. I know people who use twitter almost ENTIRELY via text messaging, almost never visiting the site. - Otto, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2Everybody I know uses Twitter or Facebook in some fashion. And most of them are not in front of a computer all day.
Twitter is very useful if you think of it as extended text messaging. Because you can say what's going on from your phone (text to 40404), and then anybody who's interested can subscribe to it or even get it texted to themselves automatically. Like a text-msg "shout".
Facebook is useful for keeping in contact and sharing simple things like photos and such easily. It's easy to use for the non-computer user, who would have trouble emailing photos and such. - thefinger, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Give them time. There'll be ads... somehow.
- thefinger, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1You know, it's the damdest, most unfair thing. I've just brought my FB account out of inactive and even spruced it up a bit. Now they're saying it's going down. :(
- thefinger, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1If that's true, then I digg you up for honesty.
- Terr01, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1Speaking as someone with coworkers working on building an app that interoperates with Twitter... no. I believe they described it as crap combined with punishingly bad performance.
- thefinger, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1and the faster they will tumble.
- CrushThemTorg, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1It's not a phenomenon, it's an isolated spike in populatiry among a certain niche market.
- thefinger, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1WHO CARES what you're doing?!! What matters is what I'M doing. For example, right now I'm banging a hot blonde Swedish woman. You can't top that!
Oh wait... I may have walked into a joke trap. - placidified, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Can i watch ?
- ThirdPrize, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Surely if Facebook implemented something Twitter like it would blow it away.
- TomPhoolery, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1Is there a way to synchronize Twitter with Facebook & MySpace? It'd be very useful if it could act as a "status gateway" to update the status' of all the other social networks out there...
- mjbyrne, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1twitter = lame for almost every single college student and younger. the only people who really use it are late 20's early 30's who really have nothing else better to do (facebook is lame for older people, and dont have enough energy to blog)
- krisrm, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1Interesting article, good points about Facebook News Feeds as well. If Facebook would change a few things around so it could be used in a similar way (as a blogging service), I think it would see more of the intelligent people that would make good use of such a thing. Twitter would be absolutely pointless for me: not only would it be another service, the concept of 'microblogging' doesn't appeal to me. I like writing more than "i just had lunch and it wuz awsome lol," and despite the popular stereotype of internet culture, I should hope that my friends are interested in reading more than a quick blurb about what I was doing at 3 in the morning.
- Wamzlee, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1The biggest problem is that most of the people I know use facebook, so if they prefer to follow me, they just check my status update. However, I do enjoy using Twitter. I actually send a text message to Twitter first and the Twitter facebook application updates my status message automatically.
- SublimeRuin, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1I agree....
http://digg.com/comedy/Top_11_things_Overheard_on_ ... - FriedTurkey, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1I guess people like having there day interrupted by useless information. I guess they can pretend like they are those important Blackberry people.
