Why OpenSocial Is Unlikely To Dethrone Facebook
techdirt.com — OpenSocial is missing probably the most important element of a social networking site: the networking. Most people don't join Facebook because they want to use the latest Facebook widget. They join because that's where their friends are, and because it offers basic functionality like messages and photos. Widgets are just icing on the cake.

I wouldn't underestimate Google. - BossX, on 11/03/2007, -1/+4This totally misses the point of OpenSocial.

- whatthefu, on 11/03/2007, -1/+1Something will dethrone Facebook, just like something dethroned MySpace and friends. It's just a matter of time before someone comes along with a better idea. Facebook had its perks, but they're eroding away with ads and useless ***** masquerading as "customization."
- str3ama, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1it sorta feels like Google is just being spiteful with OpenSocial. They don't really care about transparency, they just want to cut into Facebook's dominance especially since their two google owned social networks are on the demise (Orkut and Dodgeball)..Orkut has some standing in Brazil, but even that is declining because more and more are going over to Facebook.
