- gcnaddict, on 04/08/2009, -3/+301Simple answer which everyone somehow missed:
GMail for corporations only uses thoroughly tested and vetted features. GMail for the public is a beta program for testing features before they're rolled out for non-beta customers. Example: themes were only recently rolled out to corporate customers even though they've been available to the public for a while.
GMail itself left beta the second Google started charging corporations for it. They just happen to have a beta branch... just like many other applications and services. The only thing unusual about it is that the beta branch is mandatory unless you're a paying corporate customer. - wickensworth, on 04/08/2009, -8/+287Because it's Beta than all the other email services
- AbominableHoman, on 04/08/2009, -3/+214It's in Beta until it become self aware.
- Hydraulix, on 04/08/2009, -34/+231"Why Is Gmail Still in Beta?'
Because they don't feel like everything is 100% yet? - zosoIV, on 04/08/2009, -6/+166I don't really care. I've used it for years and I love it even if it's still "in beta".
- hoju7887, on 04/08/2009, -12/+155I love google and all, but maybe the reason is that they don't have to be held liable when say...my girlfriend's inbox was completely deleted without any reason or warning.
They fixed everything of course, but only after a very frustrating couple of days dealing with their customer service. - inactive, on 04/08/2009, -6/+135Because they are trying to beat Duke Nukem Forever for the "most consecutive years in beta" award.
At least we can use gmail though. - ChromaVita, on 04/08/2009, -0/+93Maybe the name of the email service is just "GMail Beta" and nobody really realized it.
- bluestatic, on 04/08/2009, -2/+86By that logic, most every piece of software should be in beta. The nature of software is to evolve and thus nothing is ever 100%.
- HomeSkillz, on 04/08/2009, -2/+80*groan*
- aspec, on 04/08/2009, -2/+73Even if it wasn't in beta, why would they be liable? You're not paying for the service. You could be using a client like Mail, Thunderbird, or Outlook with SMTP.
- failedpimp, on 04/08/2009, -11/+75Google = Skynet
think about it. - TheSkunkMonkey, on 04/08/2009, -6/+69I think you've hit the nail on the head here.
By claiming it's a beta product and putting disclaimers of responsibility in the TOU, they pretty much have created the perfect CYA scenario. Anything bad that happens to a user can be quickly brushed of with "It's beta and we made no promises of quality." - ksalminen, on 04/08/2009, -3/+65I kind of think the logo would be empty without the beta in the corner.
- ACalcutt, on 04/08/2009, -21/+78uh...who cares
- riskybeats, on 04/08/2009, -0/+48Sounds like witch talk!
BURN HIIIM! - ddhillon, on 04/08/2009, -9/+57Not sure why ppl are digging this up. Am I missing something?
- Rivetgeek, on 04/08/2009, -2/+46because @gmail.com looks retarded on a CEO's business card.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 04/08/2009, -1/+43Ok, I thought about it but I'm not seeing it...
- nimawin, on 04/08/2009, -3/+42...about.
- NathanielJ, on 04/08/2009, -3/+41kingfoot's comment should be placed on a grammar website somewhere, showing how the lack of proper spacing can completely reverse the intended meaning of the sentence.
- Jetplanefu, on 04/08/2009, -7/+43Remember this being on digg a while ago, seems kind of the same:
http://royal.pingdom.com/2008/09/24/why-is-almost- ... - anexanhume, on 04/08/2009, -1/+35It was an ATT commercial about texting. I wasn't sure either, but when I responded with a quote from the same commercials. I got buried. Go figure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySR3hpieiQc&fea ... - SkippyDoorknob, on 04/08/2009, -2/+36Yeah but that same sort of stuff can happen to non-beta webmail services too. And to be honest, I trust the reliability of Beta Gmail over non-beta Hotmail or others...
- MtheoryX, on 04/08/2009, -0/+33GET TO DA CHOPPA!!!
- kingfoot, on 04/08/2009, -3/+35thats cause youre already apart of it.
- NathanielJ, on 04/08/2009, -3/+34I'm confused about how beta fits into that at all. They put disclaimers in the TOU that absolves them of any responsibility. It's a free service that you use at your own risk. Beta has nothing to do with it. Having an extra four letters on their logo has no legal bearing whatsoever.
- bubbameister33, on 04/09/2009, -0/+31Wocka wocka wocka.
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -1/+28yu clothez. gib dem too me.
- RaidVan, on 04/08/2009, -1/+28I don't think you have a girlfriend. Enjoy your deleted porn e-mail subscriptions.
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -3/+26JUST TO SHOW OFF!!
That a beta product from Google is far superior than any other webmail service. - HonoredMule, on 04/08/2009, -1/+24It's not a legal difference, but PR management. The biggest problems come when consumers expect something they may likely not get.
With a "beta" label, all reliance on a service comes from learned behavior. Expectations start low and then scale up to what the service actually offers in practice...instead of having to drop from arbitrarily-defined preconceptions. No one expects Google services to satisfy them until they've actually tested them out, and then they don't expect reliability until that's exhibited over time as well. - jmo1687, on 04/09/2009, -0/+22CARLOOOOSSS
- amk29j, on 04/08/2009, -0/+22I'm digging you up because your comment up made me laugh not because I had to read it 4 times too.
- NodOfficer, on 04/08/2009, -2/+23Unless you work for Google.
- BlackJackJester, on 04/08/2009, -0/+18I have a friend who works at Google - it's still in beta because the infrastructure that supports it can't guarantee 99.999% uptime and complete redundant service. While they already have something like triple redundant servers, in order for them to consider it a release, they need to achieve 4 or 5 times redundancy (I forget the exact numbers, we had this conversation about a year ago).
This is the answer to the question. /thread. - corysfo, on 04/08/2009, -1/+18no it's not. seriously. who cares if they call it "beta" when it works better than yahoo and hotmail's 4.0 crap? waste your thinking power on how to attach lasers to stuff.
- lolque, on 04/08/2009, -0/+17Duke never even hit Beta. Perhaps Alpha at one point or another.
God I want that game so bad. Thanks for reminding me. Now I'm going to be in a perpetually bad mood for the rest of the day :(
DOUK. NOUKEM. *****. YEAR! - Mizzike, on 04/08/2009, -4/+19So wtf does "idk my bff jill" have to do with this story?
- roxgod666, on 04/08/2009, -1/+16I buried him because that comment made absolutely no sense.
- voteme4pope, on 04/08/2009, -3/+17Nothing to be proud of.

Q: Why is Gmail Still in Beta?
A: We don't know. But here are some other examples that actually make sense. - anexanhume, on 04/08/2009, -11/+25myob!
- ssavoy, on 04/09/2009, -0/+14http://instantrimshot.com/
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -1/+15I buried you, even though I agree. I hate seeing people ask for diggs.
- marm0lade, on 04/08/2009, -1/+14Obviously you have never used gmail.
- tehWhisp, on 04/09/2009, -0/+13=O
- designerutah, on 04/08/2009, -6/+19And you've hit the nail on the head. Maybe by retaining the Beta in the label, Google is simply indicating that it's ever evolving?
- orthodoxDrew, on 04/08/2009, -4/+16so people talk about it
