The official word from the corporate office to our sales staff was that the company wasn't making the most money from the big-ticket hardware (i.e., desktop computers, laptops and printers) - but the enormous markup on "accessories". The first of which was printer cables (parallel, USB), now it's fire-wire cables and such. The last company I worked for decided to "roll your own" cat5 patch cables and we saved a serious bundle. All it took was a mondo-sized roll of cable, a bag of RJ45 connectors and a special crimping tool. We figured even with the hourly salary of a desktop technician, we still saved a lot from the pre-made, packaged patch cables. Imagine that.

Unless I really need a wire or cable right away, I'll never buy one from a store. But that shouldn't be an issue for me with the stockpile of wires that I have now.
