- TheHolyGrenade, on 01/26/2009, -1/+23For a company like Google, who's goal is to control as big a part of the information available on the internet as possible, I can understand why Knol fits their vision. It's basic marketing though, that to copy an already existing product, it has to be a) cheaper, or b) better, thank the original. Both are free, and Knol at this point certainly isn't better. Google certainly has a job to do here.
On a sidenote, I find it amusing that if you Google knol, the two top spots is the actualy Knol pages, and the third is the Knol Wikipedia entry ;-D - JDoorjam, on 01/27/2009, -2/+20That would be more compelling if I hadn't heard that argument for years now, all while Wikipedia's article accuracy and volume continued to steadily improve. Wikipedia has always been home to a small group that took themselves a bit too seriously. It pisses off the users who get rubbed the wrong way in (mostly silly) disputes, but it hasn't seemed to hurt the content.
- EMFK, on 01/26/2009, -0/+15Google should re-package Knol as an online writing community specifically for people that want to write and get their 'information' to a larger audience. In other words, make it more like Helium. With so many people blogging and wanting to write material for the whole world to see, this might be a better path for them. Otherwise, I believe Knol will eventually fade. Getting people to shift gears from Wikipedia to something else is a monumental task in itself, but it might find a better web life as a site for up and coming writers.
- billricardi, on 01/27/2009, -1/+13Knol is a very cheaply-maintained project. Like everything else in business, it's about cost to potential upside. If it costs Google next to nothing to run and they think it could make them bread in the long run, they have no reason to take it down. Jaiku, Dodgeball, and Lively are all resource hogs. Knol mostly costs them storage, currently the cheapest resource in the IT world! Since it's mostly text, bandwidth is minimal. This is a no brainer.
As to function, Knol is a good place for writers to put things that their normal publishers won't touch with a 10 foot pole. I put a piece up explaining why 90 percent of people playing online poker would be lifetime losers. Do you think the poker and gaming sites that I write for want to publish that? Nope, not in a million years. - nikpappagiorgio, on 01/26/2009, -1/+12Even Bill is confused:

- lilamae, on 01/26/2009, -4/+11I dugg the story but I'm no fan of Google. They scare me. Too big, too pushy. It's like the Giant Octupus That Devoured the World.
- jasmeetsb, on 01/27/2009, -0/+7And what the hell happened to GrandCentral?? I have been using it for over an year now and I'm really concerned that Google might pull the plug on that one too.
There was a time when Google was synonymous with Innovation. NO MORE!!!
All it does nowadays is acquire a real good service and then let it Rot. - thelastcivilian, on 01/27/2009, -0/+7...and why won't Grand Central come out of beta?
- Swivelstick, on 01/27/2009, -0/+7Which is said about almost any interactive website including shock horror DIGG
- LiquidSpark, on 01/26/2009, -13/+19Can't blame them for trying. Wikipedia has been overrun by a faux-aristocracy and it now under their control. Wikipedia is becoming a disaster.
- SeoSmarty, on 01/26/2009, -5/+11Love this citation: "We're not sure what the thinking here is. We're still not even sure what Knol is for. For a how-to, like performing car maintenance, we'll go to a site that's run by car-fanatics. For general knowledge, Knol can't come close to touching Wikipedia. If anything, Knol seems to have a reputation for nothing so much as plagiarism, ignorance, and self-promotion.We're not sure what the thinking here is. We're still not even sure what Knol is for. - DigitAl56K, on 01/27/2009, -2/+8Google's mission statement:
"Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."
Knol is in near-perfect alignment with their mission statement, certainly more so than any of these other projects, thus it survives.
Good call IMO. - javiero, on 01/27/2009, -0/+5Im still waiting for GrandCentral :(
- Wizardo55, on 01/27/2009, -0/+4I'm so glad I grabbed an account on that one before it closed, hell before it was bought by Google. It's been a real nice thing to have.

- ahudson, on 01/27/2009, -1/+3Because it's Udi Manber's pet project: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udi_Manber
- Atomic1fire, on 01/27/2009, -0/+2except that jaiku was not killed off,
It was opensourced afaik , and moved to the appspot servers. - mynameistux, on 01/27/2009, -1/+2because you touch yourself at night
- CoD4, on 01/27/2009, -0/+1Don't worry, mad ***** will change when the octopus gets here
- trollick, on 01/27/2009, -1/+2They could have done something interesting/useful with Knol, like made it a semantic tool/platform. In it's present form it's just unnecessary.
- acteon29, on 01/27/2009, -3/+2It's curious to see what blogs discredit themselves with their attacks to Knol
- Nameloc, on 01/27/2009, -4/+3Did anyone else misread the title of this?
- cubicrystal, on 01/27/2009, -3/+1Did Google also buy Digg by any chance?
- lelebelle, on 01/27/2009, -7/+1Knol seems like it's going to suck. Dugg 'cause I love Google.

What is Digg?
