- pharekyz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The story is promoted to the front page after a certain number of diggs. That number depends upon the persons posting "karma" and a number of other factors.
Comments and length of time before it makes it to the front page are irrelevant. Thank you, drive thru. - NeonDemon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I ♥ Google
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The Economist just published a good analysis on why Google is NOT the new Microsoft. The article concedes that Google has become a force in the tech world, just like IBM and Microsoft were at one time. Yes, there are many similarities between the two, but it is the subtle differences between Microsoft and Google that matter.
If you have been using Windows forever, try giving it up for a day. You'll have to get a new OS and a bunch of new software. Now try not using Google for a day. Not a problem - there are plenty of alternative search engines, webmail, calendar, map sites, etc. on the net. While Microsoft relies on a proprietary OS and software, Google relies on the open standards of the internet. But those open standards can be used by other companies to create their own products to compete with Google. Google by no means has a lock on the market like Microsoft does. - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9In my opinion, nothing innovative was happening because there was no competition. Google came in and said "hey, we can do this 10 times better for everybody" and so they did it. Although people are freaking out about google obtaining so much information about them, they have shown in the past that they have no interest in giving it away freely, so I'm okay with it. Besides, I'm careful of what I give them.
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7you shouldn't spam in your comments, ben1000
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well let's see. Rather than having to put up with a bunch of typical ads and over-robust UIs, Google gives me an easy to use and navigate interface and text ads ala AdSense. Sure their services aren't the best when they come out, but Google keeps adding features to make them better as they go along. I use Gmail, I use Google Calendar, I've used Gtalk in Gmail, and nearly every other service that Google offers. I feel that Google gives me what I want without charging me or annoying me with overly complex UIs and/or annoying ads. It's not their fault that they seem to do what they do well, and can let me benefit from it for free.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Google makes everyone else nervous because they just.. give consumers what they want. They're an advertising company that makes unobtrusive ads. You'd think, billions of dollars or profit later, that everyone else would get it.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Google is the new Microsoft, give it another 3-5 years and the geeks will hate google just as much as Microsoft. I can already see the beginnings of it.
- nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Microsoft is already at the leading edge of being hated. No other company is able to be hated as much as Microsoft, and I don't see this trend dying in the near future. :~)
But seriously, Google is not the leader of search engines because of the advertising. Google is the leader because they have the best search engine. The advertising is just a necessity to keep Google profitable. Granted, sometimes I find myself clicking on the ads, but only because they are relevant and non-obtrusive. But for the other 97% of the time I'm using Google, I'm using it because it's a search engine, not an advertising company. - duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm trying to understand what is new here, that any of us are not already aware of?
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Google is super intelligent. People tend to hate the person on top (think NY Yankees and MS). What they have done is convinced the people that they are not "evil". There is really very little difference in what companies like Google, Microsoft or even Apple want. What matters is how they carry themselves. At this, Google has done an excellent job.
- czack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Also called an extreme bias.
- GrinningFool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Not a problem - there are plenty of alternative search engines, webmail, calendar, map sites, etc. on the net."
There are ... alternatives?
How remarkable. - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Another way to get Google to move to Google Everything! Just keep helping the big boy.

Nice use of adsense there. - norz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Google didn't go to China, they would have another search engine, equally censored.
If you want to boycott China, don't buy products that have been made in China. - Genma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3like oh noes, another "google isn't giving full disclosure and letting investors tell them what to do!" article, but it's a nice perspective. let's take a rehash of some common info that makes people smile:
``Google is causing disruption in a variety of areas," said Anthea Stratigos , co founder and chief executive of Outsell Inc., a Burlingame, Calif., research firm. ``It's pushing advertising revenue online. It's creating a model where software can be hosted by ad funding. Because of Google, things that have long been fee-based now have the potential to be free to consumers and supported by ads."
The effect can be seen in falling profits, staff cutbacks, and programming changes in the media industry, but the changes brought about by the Google model may be only beginning. ``As they go forward, you're going to see the corporate jets disappear for the executives of NBC and the Internet service providers," predicted John Katsaros , principal at the Internet Research Group in Los Altos, Calif. ``You're going to see slow, agonizing deaths or reevaluation of businesses."
wow google using their own tactics against them, while all the chicken littles run around protecting the cash. the control freaks fear change, and it's so great to watch them squirm. "aw crap we have to work for our money now." makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. - bloodbag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google and Microsoft support China's Government. They should both be boycotted until they admit to and repair the msg. that this sends to the people of the world. If this countrys' Corporations (USA) keep making deals with this Communist Government, it is only more proof how corrupt our Government actually is to allow this.
Remember Tiananmen Square!!!! - multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree.
- gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1do they feel the same way?
- moracity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I still can't figure out how google makes money. That's what makes me nervous. I think google's days are numbered. It's already falling out of public favor and the trend will continue. I will continue using google for now, but they'll never make any money off of me.
I must be a freak of nature because my mind blocks out all advertising. I watch a lot of TV and while I may see the same ad over and over again, I never remember it. I find myself constanttly saying "oh yeah, that's what that commercial is for!" every single time I see it.
On the internet, I have nearly all ads blocked. Even when I wasn't blocking ads, I blocked them out. I certainly would never, and have never, clicked on an internet ad in the last 10 years. I probably clicked on the "link exchange"-type ads back the web was mostly personal websites, but commercialism took over, that was it for me.
Are people really that susceptible to mass advertising? Surely there are thousands or millions of people like me. I guess the proof is in the pudding. If there weren't idiots responding to all the spam email, we wouldn't have a spam problem. The same goes for internet ads. It reminds me a bit like talking about drivers. You can have a group of 20 people complaining about how bad people drive, yet all of them are perfect drivers. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@moracity
You don't know it but you ARE clicking on Ads. If you use Google or most any other Search Site the sites at the top are paying for results. I'm not just talking about "Sponsor Sites" either. Companies and people alike pay Google to return their sites near the top. The higher up the more you pay. - peter303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Universal blackmail! Google knows everything bad about me
and everyone else, and makes it visible to everyone else.
"He's making a list. He's checking it twice. He is going to
find out whos naught or nice ...." - from a Christmas carol - norz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mousky: "Now try not using Google for a day. Not a problem - there are plenty of alternative search engines, webmail, calendar, map sites, etc. on the net"
Plus with webmail & calendar, google *doesn't lock* your data: you can have your emails automatically copied to another address, or get a local copy via pop. With calendar, you can subscribe to the feed to keep in synch (haven't tested this). - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3As a former employee of Microsoft, Google, and Apple I can tell you with ABSOLUTE conviction that Google is much like microsoft. They are turning into a huge company, huge wasteful meetings, wasted talent, and waaaay to many product managers to oversee the few employees who turn out real code.
Google drives employees like slaves, sucks code out of them, and takes all your time. I'd honestly rather work at microsoft than google, at least at the end of the day they didn't expect you to stay till 9pm every night. When working at google I worked 18 hour days, and was constantly hassled by some dumbass manager coming around to "see how everyone is doing", and "lets have a meeting to discuss where we are at". I've never had more wasted meetings. Google pays better than Microsoft, but not by much, and if you have family or any kinda life, you can kiss it goodbye, because at google you are property, your just a number, and a code machine, and they expect you to buy into eat, sleep, dream goooogle. That and every employee at google is only there waiting, and cashing in what stock they can so they can go start their own business. Everyone has there own business at google, or their own side project, and they cash out and leave.
My experience at Apple was the best of the 3. Better pay, totally different system, no dumbass meetings allowed (there was a sign that said "meetings are 90% a ***** waste") above the door, and we did everything in circle style development instead of handing ***** off from one department to the next. Apple is the only company that I've every seen actually innovate the way people work in teams. Everywhere else it's the same old *****, boring meetings, wasted resources, and too many project managers. Now I freelance.
In order of companies I enjoyed working for:
1. Apple
2. Microsoft (too many managers)
3. Google (too many managers) - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What should make investors nervous is their bloated stock price. When it comes crashiing down people will sell that stock so fast to try not to lose too much money.
- ozonew4m, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0you cannot deny that google is the best in the business at what it does
http://www.link-exchange-forum.com - Kupotek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That article isn't exactly accurate in that Google does care and will ban you for breaking the terms of service. Seems to me that columnist is blowing a lot of hot air.
- Muddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never bought a damned thing from a google ad or any other NET ad. I've been on the net over 12 years.
I spend exorbitant amounts of time ensuring I never see any ads here, because I can.
If I want something I'll research it, then search for the lowest price. My great grandfather, grandfather, father nor I give/gave a damn about prostrate shrinking pills that can cause anal bleeding. Don't want to serve up your crap opinions if I don't look at your goofy adverts, that's fine to. I'll go elsewhere. - norz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0*****
- felyduw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Actually I think Sony gives Microsoft a run for its money on the being hated department...
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Google doesn't make everyone nervous. It's a fair to mediocre search engine, now eclipsed by Yahoo and equalled by MS and will fade away as something else comes into 'fashion'. Don't get things out of proportion
- pozzoe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Also, google is not blatantly ripping someone else products.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3The sheep are nervous because the sheep have been trained to swallow only closed formats and programs at-cost. Giving them something good for free forces them to examine their misconceptions of the value of things which are free.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Google "sucks up" to China for one simple reason......1.5+ Billion potential customers (or should that be 1.5 billion reasons?).
- Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Google makes people nervous because they are using their overvalued stock to get into every market possible and undercut the existing players.
It's exactly what Microsoft does ... throwing around their big wallet and killing the existing competition in various markets. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What?
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0If Google will "never make any money off me", then why are you nervous? What do you care if Google succeeds or fails? You say that "google's days are numbered" but then go on to say "I will continue using google for now". Well, how can their days be numbered if you keep using it? Your logic is skewed.
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1But they still don't allow ?OUTPUT=RSS in the search results as they do news.google.com - why? I know - It's the money. They make money on google searches when people click on ads, but cannot with the news.google.com because lawsuits would fly. The only reason they allow OUTPUT=RSS on news is how they monetize news profits allowing others to use the STOLEN scraped news content. Checkout topix.net. It's a direct dup of google news, but with google ads. If google had any balls, they would stop this immediately because it's gonna hurt when they get bit.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Well Google has done for search what Microsoft did for operating systems.
It made the first one that EVERYONE could use.
Eventually Google will get so caught up in being a corporation that they'll just turn in to greedy bastards too.
But I'll love them until the day that happens...& probably after that too. - neoknight, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2google should be making itself nervous. At the rate they are growing, people will just love to hate them. And the more that happens, there is room for other startups to come up as long as they don't get bought out by google like that isreali programmer in australia.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Another way to get Google to move to Google Everything! Just keep helping the big boy.
http://www.oozm.com/List_of_Acquisitions_by_Google - phlydwg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"Google is the new Microsoft" So where does that put Microsoft? Everybody's favorite?
- multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1The reason Google makes me nervous is that they like China better then the country they run their business in. China wants peoples search habits sure they had it over, US wants it they fight it every step of the way, while they brown nose China so hard they pratical live in its colon.

- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Actually, I think comments are relevant, just not very.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Why www.*****.com makes Google nervous?
:-)
It's called truthiness. - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6It's not just about the number of diggs, twertyto.
This is a great story. They forgot to mention the stuff that makes advertisers and shareholders nervous though. Namely, stealing and lying. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1I truly wonder where the stock is going. Different people 'in the know' have predicted $500 and $100. It seems very speculative...

http://www.neo-fight.tv [The "Techno-Debate" Video Podcast] - twertyto, on 10/12/2007, -34/+9Roughly one digg per hour over a day and no comments and it gets front page. How does this system work again?
Lame story BTW.

What is Digg?
