- darkened, on 11/10/2009, -0/+30Q: "Why Google Is Buying AdMob?"
A: Because almost every single android application/game that is funded by advertisements uses AdMob. - fxu1989, on 11/10/2009, -0/+12Adblock for phones...
- joshuasortino, on 11/10/2009, -4/+11If Google aquires AdMob, they will make a significant profit off of the iPhone platform (considering so many applications embed AdMob into their phones.) I'm sure Apple isn't a big fan of the acquisition.
- chadell, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6free mobile phones for all
- sentry21, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6before we know it google will take over the world, if it means free wifi then i don't give a *****.
- IphtashuFitz, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5Why? Because they were unable to buy their way into mobile advertising through other means. They looked into buying another mobile advertising company called Third Screen Media a couple years ago, but AOL bought them up instead. You may think that AOL is just a dial-up provider has-been, but years ago they realized that advertising is a huge industry. They started buying a wide range of advertising companies that fit a number of vertical markets and spun them off as Advertising.com which is a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL that provides a wide range of advertising services. Since AOL snapped up Third Screen Media before Google could get their hands on it, Google had to settle for a different mobile advertising company if they wanted to compete effectively in the mobile advertising market. Since the mobile advertising market is already huge and has a number of entrenched companies like TSM/AOL, AdMob, and others it made sense for Google to buy one of them rather than try to muscle their way into mobile advertising on their own.
- neoq36, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3Probably to offer free mobile phone service, the phone and service is free because the background will probably be a hour to hour ad and you'll get spam with a bunch of ad text messages
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3Why? Because Google makes most of its money through ads. Why risk someone taking over the next big market before you do?
- proverbs17, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3They want to make more money by advertising on cell phones........
- DjBearPDX, on 11/10/2009, -1/+41. Assimilate all mankind via search engine and mobile devices
2. ????????
3. Profit! - darkened, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2Already exists for rooted phones, not as effective as AdBlock Plus in FF yet though.
- jwolcott, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2http://AdMob.mobi
- Jedakiah, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2While Google of course wants more people on the web more often, they would of course rather see those people using Androids and not iPhones.
So Google already wants the iPhone to flourish, in a way. And Apple wants the mobile advertising to succeed, but would likely prefer someone other than Google to get it there. Catch-22s on both sides. - Lucid00, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Well it's also that Google stated that younger companies perform better, so it's better to take advantage of that than instead of jump into the market as is.
- IphtashuFitz, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Actually, according to the Internet Archive, thirdscreenmedia.com first showed up in May 2004, but AdMob first showed up in Sept. 2004. Also, TSM got started by acquiring a complete ad delivery network called WindWire that was developed in 2000 and used by AT&T/Cingular and other carriers during that time. TSM bought WindWire (which was actually acquired by a company called Avesair in 2002 who eventually sold it to TSM) and used it as a template for the new advertising system that they eventually deployed. So they effectively were the earlier adopter of the technology.
- smoger, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1The thing that's odd to me is that google could easily change that on their own, except that the requirements to be accepted into the beta for their own Adsense mobile program are only accessible to a very small percentage of the most downloaded applications. IIRC the program requires 250,000 impressions per day minimum.
- Lucid00, on 11/10/2009, -1/+2I've no idea why you're being dugg down here.
- Lucid00, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2It could cause an issue in the future, Apples recently been investing in things that show they may want to remove a few Google based features from the iPhone in the future.
If Google begins to own their platform without literally owning it, Apple may loose control over what can and can't be done (and we know how Apple loves control). - amitait, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Why not?
- bigtime2, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Yes please!
- Dwarshak, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Wow huge acquisition, but this should have already happened. After all this is google, one of the global leaders of technological ingenuity.....not cavemen.
- roseap, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Why? Because, above all else, Google is a vehicle for delivering ads. It's their M.O. Their vehicles are very good, mind you, but that's what they do. Why does everyone sound surprised by this acquisition?
- erikarthur, on 11/10/2009, -0/+0good point, but Google didn't 'settle' with AdMob instead of TSM. AdMob is bigger than TSM, earlier adopter of the technology.
- Lucid00, on 11/10/2009, -1/+1It could even be backed up with data: http://androidandme.com/2009/11/news/admob-data-20 ...
- jdames1980, on 11/10/2009, -1/+1Why would Apple care? It puts Google in the position of wanting the iPhone to succeed and to support the platform.
- teamdigg, on 11/10/2009, -0/+0google are hungry to make money whatever came to his way.
- tarmon, on 11/10/2009, -1/+1Because Jesus loves us and Google wants to tell us that.
(At least that's what every AdMob ad I've ever seen tells me.) - flamesrule, on 11/10/2009, -1/+0Abortions for some, tiny American flags for others!
