- seltaeb4, on 11/20/2008, -4/+43I fear that Facebook has already become MySpace. Facebook was a great directory with useful features; more and more it seems to mutated into a junior-high yearbook.
All of these "applications" that were supposed to expand functionality are so much silly drivel designed to harvest personal info for commercial ends. They had a great thing going, but they've essentially destroyed it. They've gone for quick marketing bucks at the expense of their credibility.
They've killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. Facebook held the keys to the kingdom of social networking, and they've squandered that advantage. The race for a non-ridculous social networking site is on. - snookky, on 11/19/2008, -4/+38i just deleted my facebook, and the next site i go to is digg and this article comes up. ironic.
- sdellboy, on 11/20/2008, -8/+40Hi5 = possible gayest name ever?
- wheresmclean, on 11/20/2008, -8/+32I think I speak for all of us when I say "What the ***** is Hi5?"
- BeShirtHappy, on 11/19/2008, -3/+19I've just begun to utilize Facebook... and I think it can be a great tool for promotion. I agree they need to work diligently to NOT become a MySpace; I think Facebook will rise to the challenge.
- apostledeets, on 11/19/2008, -1/+16you mean you just deactivated your facebook? I deactivated mine on Sunday. It's a bitch they won't actually let you 'delete' it. They keep all your information on a server in case "you decide to come back." yeah... i feel secure of any personal or private information that may or may not have been on my account...
/s - wezults, on 11/20/2008, -1/+16Hi5 has a massive user-base. Just not so much in the U.S. And it might just be more profitable.
- Trekhawk, on 11/20/2008, -5/+20Too late. Once applications proliferated you cannot escape crap. It was better when it was exclusive to college students and free of Scrabble, flower gardens, vampire bites, etc.
- Tulle, on 11/20/2008, -0/+14I'm pretty sure facebook's new design was implemented to tackle this issue. It (for the most part) keeps annoying applications out of sight - a huge step in the right direction from the old design.
- peestandingup, on 11/20/2008, -3/+16I think some of you guys just like hating on things that are popular.
Facebook is MILES ahead of Myspace. Have you seen Myspace lately?? Yeah, its the same garbage it has been for years now. Its a damn chore just to interact with friends, read comments, etc. All the while Facebook continues to innovate, un-clutter things & give the user better tools to interact with people all the time.
Not licking their balls, but IMO Facebook is everything a social site should be. - t3hmyth, on 11/20/2008, -1/+12It's a shame most people don't know about that.
- igyigyigy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+11'Block All Invites From This Application'
After a few weeks of tedious clicking, the problem goes away
Then there's always some friend or other who goes and adds every conceivable app, so just 'block all invites from ' and that part of the problem will go away too.
At least facebook gives you the option... - sdellboy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+11And maybe you just need to learn how to block the zombie *****...my FB page is clean as...it's not complicated...
- shame126, on 11/20/2008, -1/+11Facebook as alot of pratical stuff like invitations stuff like that. incoporates some real life socializing.
Put personally I use it to keep myself updated with my friends who are overseas, which that itself is great for me! - Gizza, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8All depends on your friends. I barely ever got any app invites, and after a few blocks I can almost none at all now.
- Ricochetbiscuit, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9Tell you what, things have gotten a bit more spammy there for me, that's for sure! Dag-nab-it! :P
- Trekhawk, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9Now Facebook just needs a music section.
- Hazardc, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Apparently you haven't had many facebook stalkers....
.....which means you probably don't know many females. - munna80, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7Yeah, maybe you speak for "all of you" americans. Hi5 is far from "not surviving" as is uncorrectly written here, as it is the most used social site in many countries.
- eejbm, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6'ignore all'
'ignore all invites from this friend'
use them - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+71. Why should this bother you? If you only want to be friends with Students and 'Industry' folk then you do that
2. I would just get rid of ALL the *****. - iChopPryde, on 11/20/2008, -2/+7agree a lot of people were hating on the new facebook layout where I was loving it now I no longer see peoples stupid applications all I want to do is write on there dam wall or see videos/pictures all that gimmick crap keep on a separate tab.
- fquednau, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Remove the zombie app? Block it? Just a few clicks away. Personally I like the books and the movies apps, they can actually help finding a new book to read...although it really depends on your friends...if they don't read you're out of luck.
- stormofswords, on 11/20/2008, -3/+8I have to agree. I recently took a look at Myspace after a haitus of about a year and a half and it's worse than I remember it. It's like a ***** magnet that attracts the worst kinds of people from every corner of the internet. More flashy gifs and shirtless douches than I could count.
Facebook has gone downhill in recent years, but it's like the Garden of Eden compared to Myspace. - themutt22, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6I thought that you can delete your facebook here
http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form ...
says you can't retrieve your info - rdwinder, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6Because they are backed by the banking tycoon family de Rothschild.

Banks decide whats hot and whats not... - bromac, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Your assumption is that people are sensible when they socialize, on networking sites or not.
From real world experience, they are not. Outside of professional work, people can be pretty damn silly. - BossX, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4The main reason Facebook became popular is because it requires you to enter your real name, making it easy for people to find you. Every other social network lets you use an alias.
- mykotron, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4one word..... SPEED.
its the same reason Google eventually stole the search engine market from Yahoo. (remember google prided themselves on their search engine main page on being a very simplistic piece of code.) And just as Myspace originally took the social networking market from FRIENDSTER.
Speed of information retrieval is key. - Gizza, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3And with the apps etc being on separate tabs now it hardly clutters the interface at all. In fact, you don't even really notice them any more.
- addiktion, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3You need to take another look at Myspace then. It's like a damn whore house over there. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten a damn message to view someones web cam or hey I'm in town check me out and other gay *****. Facebook is godlike in code compared to Myspace.
- feliks2, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4Use some ***** punctuation please, I had to read that last part a few times.
- smmakira, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4I deleted Myspace a week ago. I decided to keep them both and whichever one I thought was more useful I would keep. Turns out Facebook won. The "People You May Know" tool is awesome for finding those people you lost touch with over the years.
- feliks2, on 11/20/2008, -2/+5I really don't understand what the problem with pictures is. As for all the zombie *****, maybe you just have ***** friends, or add random people you don't know.
- Cheezeburgar, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Less restrictions = more users = more hits = more money
A company that changed their guidelines to attract more users makes perfect sense. - richw, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3yeah I'm sick of all the messages I get telling me I've been poked or dumbasses I don't even know inviting me to a group like "Lost my cellie, need everyones number"
- basex, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Hi5 is one of the top ten sites in a dozen Central and South American countries and a year ago it was the #1 in Portugal.
- SoftStud, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Facebook is the leading community site yet, but...
This article is a garbage. My first though was it was written way back in the past... - FishThePirate, on 11/20/2008, -5/+7It's still a giant, Pokemon-esque quest to capture "ALL THE FRIENDS LOLO!!!1" so, it fails at being a serious medium. "Social Media" has been taken further than it really ever should have, it is not the future. Nobody cares about your crappy digital photography or what you're doing RIGHT NOW!!!
- eternalfuture, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Well, too bad that some nagging people who tried to act as if they're flirting you and then after a while, they're just some women from adult paid sites. They're still in small numbers, though. But FB better be doing some house cleaning soon. Also, what's annoying is the applications and groups. Sure perhaps a few applications would be nice. But then again, having being poked around, offered to join an application that enabling buying your friend, goodness gracious! That's absurd! At this moment, the applications at FB are like a big jungle. What's so cool to be able to throw a sheep at your friends? Throw a REAL sheep, darn it!
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3since when do other countries matter
- csarak, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Have you tried iLike? One of the few apps that I use. I enjoy it, and it did prevent me from missing a concert!
- sholter, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2The only messages I get are emails about people adding me, and messages from them. I don't allow facebook to email me about anything else. If you go into your privacy settings you can control that *****.
- ammar456, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Facebook has one feature you forgot to mention: It asks for your mobile number. This was it gets you past the whole captcha thing everytime you want to add or msg someone, which just makes it hell for spammers, while guaranteeing youre a real person. Done deal.
- dragonablaze, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2facebook has lost its appeal with these stupid apps ! No i do not want to knw if i am a zombie or a vampire !
- addiktion, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1The simple solution is to clear out most of your data or at least the data that you can before you decide to "deactivate" your account.
- srg13, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1"Facebook has gone downhill in recent years, but it's like the Garden of Eden compared to Myspace."
I think that sums it up quite nicely. Facebook is pretty nice to use, but when you go on Myspace you have to wade through all the garbage everyone puts on their badly designed, hard to read myspace profile.. And then there's the annoying music everyone puts on their profiles... - shadydentist, on 11/20/2008, -4/+5I used to love facebook because it had an incredibly clean and efficient user interface. These days, my inbox is crowded with messages telling me I'm now a zombie, my profile page is cluttered with useless gadgetry, and I generally just avoid it most of the time.
Facebook needs to get back to its roots as a useful and convenient way to keep track of friends and lose extra weight, or its going to get replaced by something better.
Facebook deciding that people would love to spend money to send pictures to each other was the beginning of its decline. - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2so change your name to Donald Duck, your age to 103, your city, everything. I highly doubt they are keeping your old saved personal data.
