- frant1c, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62Diggers hate SEO sites because they're so completely immersed in concepts like "traffic", "content" and "monetization" that they completely forget that web sites are actually written and read by real people.
And that's pretty much why everyone else hates them, too. - epilonious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51SEO = Search Engine Optimization. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization
Articles criticizing a topic should at least spend the keystrokes in the first instance of the acronym so naive people (like me) can figure out what is being talked about. It's bad enough to feel dumb for not knowing the concept and having to wiki it...
Otherwise, I suppose not knowing a lick about SEOs can keep me confident that I am not one and therefore not loathed. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50Dude his heavy breathing is freaking me out.
- roomforpanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39I wonder who he borrowed that suit from. Was he on roller skates or did he have to take a piss?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Was a video REALLY necessary? I mean, why not give a bullet-point list of the reasons.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Hahaa...such charisma...
I love the fact that they mispelled the url at the beginning and end of the video - it says "bluerpint" instead of "blueprint".
All that effort gone to waste :D - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Was that guy the best guy they could find to do the video?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Was anyone else not able to finish the video due to sleaziness that the thing oozed?
- tmattoneill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23He is creepy and awful. And what's up with his collar/lapel turned up. He seems totally nervous.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22how about why diggers hate articles about digg/ers
- JezusGhoti, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Biggest douche in the universe? I think the ***** facial hair sealed it.
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20No... a good "white-hat" SEO knows to keep visitors they need to have good content, and that they need to abide by the rules of the tools they are using (like Digg). A good SEO knows that if they post a spam link to Digg, it's not worth their time anyways. A good SEO knows that having multiple accounts is criminal.
This guy is not a good SEO. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I was concentrating on how poorly he wears a suit. His lapel is unfolded.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Dude, next time go to the bathroom before making a video of yourself.
Also...ENUNCIATE... don't mumble.
Then... Get a new line of work. This one isn't for you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20He's a "one of a kind, unique" spokesperson for a "one of a kind, unique" service.
And probably the only person who works at his poor excuse for a company. - Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20That was painful to watch.
- djsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19guy looks like a dirtball, used car salesman
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The reason i hate them is because i have a small site with a page rank of 2 and on my site i have a webforum with 149 Registered users. in the last month i have had 48 people register accounts with the sole purpose of A. posting a link to spam in forums or B. Having the link to spam in their profile to try to get higher page rank. it is pissing me off. that i have to delete all that crap. So yes there probably is good seo but the seo we have to deal with every day is nothing more then spam at best.
- drsnacks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14It's Saleem who's dumb, not you. Explaining an acronym first, especially in an article where it's used repeated, is SOP.
I mean standard operating procedure.
Anyway this is another example of techie illiteracy - these are the people who shunned English classes when they got to college because they thought the courses were below them and their CompSci majors. This is what we get from that. - databyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10and what's the problem with his eyebrows?
Those things were jumping every couple seconds like somebody had electrodes on his nipples or something. - Cynoclast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a euphemism for link spam in -all- cases.
Sites that truly deserve to be among the first results in a search will end up there without link spammers. Therefore, any site that needs these link spammers to get them there do not deserve to be. Therefore all search engine optimization is just link spam. - humanseemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wow, did anyone here even RTFA?
"I present to you one YouTube video that covers every reason why Digg and Digg-like hate SEOs and their blogs, and why they are justified in their hate."
... - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9For me, the lapel distracted me the most but that tie was awful. It looks like he put on a suit, got hit by a car, then recorded this video.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12it was harder on the ears. I thought 'camera buzz' was a thing of the 90s
- kuj007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10LOL I'm with you @gharding...
the lapel was killing me... so during editing his thought process must have been something like this:
Sees the lapel. "Dammit! I can't believe I didn't catch that..." Continues watching. "Heeeeyy... this
is pretty good" more video... "This is *damn* good! -- Well I'm never gonna be able to repeat a
performance like that again... it was pure gold! The lapel will have to stay... hopefully no one will
notice it... Move over Mark Cuban, there's a new Internet Billionaire in town. Giggity" - Yorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"I mean, why not give a bullet-point list of the reasons."
1) SEOs entire purpose is to increase traffic for their clients: "We promise a 100% increase in traffic within 6 months or your money back."
2) Clients are generally AdSense shills or sell services. Rarely do they sell a product and even rarer still is it a good one: "You sell watch advice? Yes, I hear that is a hot market right now considering that people should know what they are getting into before buying a watch. Google web searches for that topic have been going through the roof."
3) Digg has a lot of traffic.
4) SEOs aren't picky about their clients: "You sell pink flamingos? The web is an untapped resource for your industry. You could make a killing!"
5) Digg is easy to dupe, just use words like AWESOME, BREAKING, DEVELOPING, anything in CAPS and drive your blog traffic to go digg your story. Hell, some people are so shameless they put buttons on their 3-sentence blog articles: "I often ask myself, whatever happened to the garden decoration the Pink Flamingo? Well, that little bit of nostalgia is back with the original Pyrex Pink Flamingo available from Hi-Tech Online, a new startup. Re-live your childhood!"
6) Not all, but the VAST MAJORITY of SEOs are willing to essentially tell a lie or, at least, not-the-truth in order to drive traffic: "They even have plans to introduce a USB-powered Pink Flamingo in the coming weeks!"
7) SEOs don't think they are SEOs. This one is self-explanatory. About 60% of the stories on Digg are SEO if I had to guess. Think about how much of the news you read on Digg in a given day seems forced and how much of it seems like you're pulling and wanting to know more. - nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think it's the half-whisper, and the constant eyebrow raises that send up the red flag for me. "Gotta keep quiet filming my video in the basement, don't want to wake mom up!"
- elsupergringo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Gary Ruplinger was picked on in middle school for his heavy breathing, his mumbling, and his incredibly short stature. Jennifer Davis was the love of his life but she laughed at him. Now he's quietly working on his little empire of websites so that when he meets Jennifer again at the 15 year reunion he can do it in his collar popped and driving his shiny new red Mazda Miata.
- r_berrones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Hi my name is moron in a cheap suit. I'll show you how to get a one way ticket OFF any website you do this on."
- mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@gharding: thanks! I had not noticed that. I think he may have been doing that on purpose as an attempted fashion statement. Niiiice.
- blackpearl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7All right I'm not so smart.
What the heck is an "SEO"?
I'll figure out why I don't like them later. - anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+72. Get a suit that fits.
That suit fits his dad just fine! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is horse *****. 95% of dugg articles and pages were put there in the first place to get backlinks and as a result better search engine rankings. Even anything that you see by reputable big daddy blogs like Engadget or Gizmodo exists so that they may get better rankings on those specific topics.
But worst of all is that this very submission - certainly by one of the yuppie tool blogger assfaces whose pictures are proudly displayed under EVERY post - exists only to recieve SEO-worthy backlinks. - trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+71. Cinch up that tie please!
2. Get a suit that fits.
I know they are small things but I couldn't take my eyes off of that tie... - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I hate SEOs, and I'll tell you why. It's because SEOs are cheaters. Search engines like Google and site like Digg and del.icio.us have systems. SEOs, no matter what their specific methods are, are people who try to cheat those systems. They do things in order to benefit themselves at the determent of everyone else in the community. We all use and depend on these sites to help us access and find information we want quickly and efficiently. SEOs make that harder for us by artificially moving their content around in the system. Imagine how awesome Google would be if they didn't have to deal with people trying to artificially increase page rank? SEOs make search engines suck for the rest of us in order to benefit themselves. No matter how "ethical" their methods are, they are all bandits. End of story.
I hate SEOs. - unicornhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh my god. what a fruit. And what's so funny is that he's going to get slammed for this 'cause you know this is going to the home page ASAP!!
- btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Seriously Encephalitic Ocelot
- milkham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6thank you , jesus, i read half the page before someone mentioned what the hell SEO is
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ mhanley:
Oh god, if the "popped lapel" became the new style, I'd be too furious to even function at the office. - pgoetz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And most articles never make it onto anyone's radar, either -- that's the whole point of social networking -- to let statistics weed out the cruft. Get over THAT, you brain-dead *****.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Aside from SEO being crap, that was one of the most poorly produced videos I've ever seen. The guy needs to take a breath and project his voice. Not only that, but is it so hard to make sure you put your jacket on properly and tied your tie snug?! If this jackass came in to my office for a job interview I'd send him packing. Oh, and lets not forget about TURNING OFF THE MIC when you fade to a graphic! Presentation is 80% of the sale. You sir have failed, miserably.
- sporb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6when someone says 'i've developed a system...' you know their a scumbag
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Guy looks like an ***** with that tie, who the hell would hire him.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Jeez, they WANT you to digg this up and make'em show more ad. Bury this crap, show yourselves as intelligent persons.
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sure the ad will be seen by more people, but the URL is incorrect so it is worthless!
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+6True SEO is a marketing school of thought to create any marketing campaign with a procedure that will be OPTIMAL for the search engines, and better online traffic. Ethics is an entirely different story, depending on the terms and confines of ethical rules that the person holds themself to. Some SEO's hold their clients interests higher than those of other communities - which is a shame. There is a delicate balance between the two. I think there are a lot of parallels to the legal profession. Most everyone dislikes lawyers, but you can bet your sweet ass, you love the lawyer that got you out of your last speeding ticket, and helped you keep your leadfoot having license. I am concerned with the performance of my clients sites - but not at the expense of others. I try not to work with folks that have the total "killer instinct, slash and burn" attitude towards driving web traffic. Just with all things in life - it's a karma thing (if you're confused on this part - a few dozen episodes of "my name is earl" should clear everything up)
The trouble with a whole lot of traffic and exposure (as the gentleman in the video is probably realizing) - is that you come under a whole lot higher level of scrutiny for your actions at that point. If you're willing to do things for extra publicity and traffic, you have to be willing to defend your actions, and deal with the reprocussions, or not be taken seriously at a later time.
SEO and communities can coexist with mutual respect. SEO is not necessarily breaking the rules - it SHOULD be, playing within the confines of the ruleset, and using an understanding of the rules for OPTIMAL results. There are some great SEO communities with respectable folks, just like digg is a great community. It's only ignorance that keeps them mutually exclusive.
I think digg hates FACELESS SEO's - I'm an SEO, and I'm happy to be from this school of thought (understanding how search engines work for marketing purposes). It's an honest living where I choose interesting clients to work with and market (hopefully) good and fun ideas online. It's the anonymity - the seo's in the shadows that are only concerned with monetization, traffic, and more subversive motives that leaves the poor taste in peoples mouths.
A few tips to those who would like to be GOOD SEO's - or just good community members in general
A. Don't pimp garbage to naive folks who don't know better for a quick buck
B. Understand that you're putting your name on the line everytime you make a public post
C. Hold yourself accountable, and be accessible online to admit when you make mistakes - spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ban the blog sites, along with sites that have a history of paraphrase/click-through articles (e.g., techeblog, etc.). Problem solved (at least for now).
- MacGyver2210, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5*goes to write another article*
"Why Diggers hate articles that generalize Diggers" - pathetik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4FreaKy...this guy just can't stop moving
- maffematician, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Can't believe no one has dug (pun intended) this far yet...
The same youtube profile (MakeMoneyOnline) that posted that video also has a video of Kevin Rose from G4 Tech TV, wherein is explained Google Adsense:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8MaV76vR7s
And even juicier, for your bed-wetting pleasure, another youtube profile (gravtex) has the same SEO optimization video as well as many more by the same kid:
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=gravtex
I think it's his profile. You'll find such informative videos as "Common Snake Myths", "How To Care For a Sick Pet Snake", and "How To Make Green Lemonade". You'll also find a lot more online-marketing videos. Even a video called, "How To Record Your First Video - Basic Instructions". Meme-mongers, rejoice! Here's your new pet.
Interestingly, every one of these videos has a cheesy URL during the lead-in and fade-out. My bet is this kid probably has some cheap hosting for dozens of domain names, uploads some how-to videos on YouTube, then sits back hoping to rake in the cash on ads. The question is.... is he? -
