- ospannero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47My question is, if Johnny can't read, how is he using the internet to get to Google Local?
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10So following the logic of this post's subject line, Google wants Little Johnny to be illiterate, and they want your house to burn. THANKS GOOGLE.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Is the internet replacing the TV as the substitute parent?
- arpad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"The exclusion of *some* local libraries"?
What a crock of *****. The only way Google exludes *some* libraries is the same way Google excludes *some* businesses: they don't make the effort to let Google find them. Some fat, friggin' exclusion. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Google found my local library and the libraries of every town in my county when searching for "category: Libraries Public". Maybe the libraries in the cities the author chose don't have their ***** together.
- DJcrayon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I can't find fire departments either on Google Local or Google Maps
- CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6RTFA before spouting off like an idiot. It's not even close to being Google's fault.
- Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7A message to the submitter of this article......die
- lordmetroid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Noo... But it is becoming a more and more important tool for information and socialization. Replacing the Telephone, mail sending and news papers.
- Agent_M, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What an odd submission title.
- patience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. Blaming Google for illiteracy. I bet you Johnny can quickly find the Wrestling Website or the Dragon Ball Z site.
Teach your kids. No one else is going to do it for you. If you think local governments that fail to even fix potholes are going to do an A+ job teaching your kis, you are wrong.
Many schools are simply warehouses to keep the kids off the streets. - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5anyone remember that google wanted to scan books into its servers?
the book publishers stopped them, worried people might share information
kind of like the RIAA... there is a greater good than your short term profits!
Information wants to be FREE !!!
Imagine having the entire tome of human media accessible and available to all
this will truly be an information revolution. - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can't find fire departments on google local? So, if your house catches on fire you plan to get on your computer, fire up google local, find the phone number for your nearest fire station, just to find out they are in the unincorporated county and you need to call the city fire station. So, back to google local, find another nearby fire station that is in city limits, and call them, just to be told to call 911 where they are dispatched?
Wouldn't it be easier to call 911?
I know you were being sarcastic, I just had to run with it. - richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dave: No, it's *****.
- jodamiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Open up a phone book and look for "libraries".
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Eh, works for me. I just typed "Library (my city) (state)" And it found all the closest ones.
- andrewthrice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, I doubt Google is excluding local libraries purposefully. Most likely, it has to do with the quality of their business directory data (infoUsa I believe, which yields 896 for Ohio - not sure about Cincinnati from his example), or the quality of their search algorithm - probably both.
As the author mentions, libraries should add themselves through Google's Local Business Center - as well as the other directories, like Yelp, Yahoo Local, Judy's Book, Shoutback, etc. - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2maybe johnny has trouble with reading the addresses of libraries...
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@del4
I take it you are the Johnny meantioned in the title? - SetarconeX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Agreed. The problem here isn't remotely with Google, it's with libraries that aren't putting in a minimum of effort to let people know that they exist.
I'm not saying libraries need to start multi-million ad campaigns, though that might not be a bad idea. I'm just saying that many libraries, perhaps because they're run almost exclusively by 80 year old women, tend to not attract a lot of attention to themselves, especially on the internet where the 80 year old ladies wouldn't spend much time.
But is any of this Google's fault? Nah. - darkmist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait one second here. I think we are all missing the obvious; who needs a library when you have Google?
- jonny5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i can so read
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, the internet instead of TV would definitely be a step up. Still, I doubt Johnny wants to go to a library when he can download an eBook and read it right on his computer. I think it's time someone created an online library where each book is only allowed to be viewed by one user at a time [so as to avoid copyright issues]. I think a lot more reading would be done in this way. [Idea Patent Pending]
- fauxXenophanes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Johnny was taught to read by a teacher, he only goes to the library to download porn w/o a POS.
- drunkjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a loser, I am offended.
I get my ego boosting from being a dick on internet forums, not through blogging like a pretentious ass.
And if Johnny's on the internet he better ***** know how to read. He can't use Google if he can't.
And if Johnny can't read I'd like to say: Johnny, you're a ***** moron!
(He can't read, he won't be offended.) - PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@4NDr01D
While information wants to be free, the latest Shakira CD isn't information is it? ;) - bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Organic means natural, or non-sponsored search results.
- LiterateWolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I found the public libraries here in town. No probs. Blogs suck for their lack of evidence and ego-boosting qualities for losers.
- Wolfghost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does "organic" (article phrase: "organic Google results") have any more meaning than "Web 2.0"? Guess they both mean the author is full of fresh fertilizer.
- treyah, on 05/15/2009, -0/+0This was an attempt to sell SEO if you goto the site.
Poorly titled...if Johnny can't read...he would never know what to type in google!
<a href="http://www.regionalbusinesslink.com">RBL&l ... - TheGentleman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No dude, what's odd is the capitalization: the word "on" is written in lowercase, it should be "On"... duh!
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google wants to push their own library?
- ajame007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I have a friend who works for the Library the Congress...
He seems to have lots to do...
that and the fact i went to the public library last week...
Leads one to believe that they still exist...
BTW you really need to check your email chithon - PixieLittle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I fully intend to email the fire department à la Moss:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=D7BQnsF7Ccc (starts at 3min15sec) - chithon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There are still Libraries??
We are talking about the brick and morter jobs with all the paper books.... right?
I have not been in one of those sence.... well sence I got highspeed and a digital Ebook reader. - drgruney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yeah... if Johnny can't read then how is he using Google Local?
- del4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ur just bitter cuz ur google stock is about to plummet.
is anyone NOT looking for a better search engine, these days? - del4, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1google isn't doing a very good job of "being not evil" these days. nazis, censorship, clickfraud.. boo google.
