- grumpyrain, on 02/20/2008, -8/+126What are these banners of which you speak?
-ABP - inactive, on 02/20/2008, -2/+101Man, I made the mistake of enrolling in a HDTVPanel.com type of spam site.. and I paid big-time for it. I was pissed, I saw the advertisement on Yahoo and I thought it was legit. To a certain extent they are legitimate in that there IS a way for you to get the big prize, but you can't get there without spending a lot of your own money on their b.s. partners.
I went and enrolled in Netflix.. no big deal, bought some coffee, picked up a stupid website / auction account and ordered some book on buying government auctioned items. I thought I was clever, ready to cancel it all or just spend "a few bucks" to get something really cool to "test, fill out surveys, and then keep".. PFFT.
Next thing I know I'm at the "final round" and have to choose between products (a trip to somewhere cool) and something else that would cost me well over 1500 bucks. Long story short, it's all *****, you will pay someway some how. Don't fall for it AND if there's a scummy lawyer who wants to file a class action against those *****, I would 100% support the cause.
BTW, Yahoo should be ashamed of promoting that *****.. I've seen those scams prop up the most on Yahoo-based websites (fantasy sports, finance, etc) - kessel, on 02/20/2008, -2/+59YOU ARE THE 23423234234TH TO SEE THIS COMMENT!
CLICK HERE TO CLAIM DICK ALL - cellzone, on 02/20/2008, -0/+51I dunno, after a while you tend to just blank them out and it just becomes a blur! :P
- gbarberi, on 02/20/2008, -0/+45It's like the advertisers feel they're at war with us "consumers." First, the ads were just pics. Then they started getting brighter. Then, they started flashing. Next thing you know, they're singing at us. Now, they dance across our screens - sometimes right on the content we're trying to read. I'm afraid that the next thing they will do is to reach out and pull us into the monitor.
- kentifer, on 02/20/2008, -0/+34i don't know how to click text, and get somewhere. ):
how do i claim my dick all? - oboy, on 02/20/2008, -1/+35"Don't fall for it AND if there's a scummy lawyer who wants to file a class action against those *****, I would 100% support the cause."
I can picture someone torn by that one... "Hey, I'm a lawyer, and that really could be a good class action lawsuit, but if I say anything here, am I admitting that I'm scummy?" - TheAngryMob, on 02/20/2008, -0/+28Like a lawyer has any qualms about anything?
- YoHenYo, on 02/20/2008, -1/+26There is nothing more heart pounding when you are reading a website, and the volume of your computer is turned up, and the banner screams "Congratulations, you've been selected to receive a free Apple Ipod."
It is instances like the one described that made me download ABP.
Companies need to learn that people may be more likely to click on an add that applies to them, rather than one that obstructs the experience of using a website. - nyeus, on 02/20/2008, -9/+32I donno about you guys, but those banner ads are the most distract.....oooo Free IPhone
*click* - MutatedNantuko, on 02/20/2008, -2/+20Adblock, To the rescue!
- wiifm69, on 02/20/2008, -0/+18you mean you were not the 10,000th visitor to yahoo? how odd...

- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -1/+16Its a Trap!
- LongShlong, on 02/20/2008, -1/+14You clearly overlooked a couple of simple tenants of humanity: No one is going to give you something for cheap or God-forbid, free... and, don't trust a salesman you can't look in the eyes.
- EmitStop, on 02/20/2008, -4/+17Just get adblock
- iofthestorm, on 02/20/2008, -1/+13Tenets, not tenants. Tenants=people who live in a rented house or the like.
- DonJohnTom, on 02/20/2008, -0/+12you mean theres no free ipod nano?!
- bxblox, on 02/20/2008, -1/+13Whoever is clicking on those banners.... Keep doing it! You keep the sites I like free for me.
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -1/+11What i shouldnt give my credit card number to the talking moose? thats crazy talk!
- Wronghead, on 02/20/2008, -0/+10I keep forgetting that there are people out there that still use IE and don't have AdBlock+.
I have almost forgotten what banner advertisements look like. - Aorawn, on 02/20/2008, -0/+10Actually, it doesn't.
- McGrude, on 02/20/2008, -0/+8OMG! It's you!
- cl2yp71c, on 02/20/2008, -1/+9I admit, I've clicked them a few times.
My mouse slipped. - flipmoe, on 02/20/2008, -0/+7what about the zit cream one, that was a great banner add. I clicked it like, 17 times. Didn't help.
- Ch0chi, on 02/20/2008, -1/+8You have to understand. Facebook/Myspace are filled with little kids and ignoramuses.
- ispeakasian, on 02/20/2008, -0/+7Hmm i get the same effect when im really wasted. uncanny ...
- VeganG, on 02/20/2008, -0/+7Adblock is no longer supported. Adblock Plus is, and continues to get updates.
- SumguyTwentyOne, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6Wow, duggmirror actually caught something!
- luskin, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6But what about what they did to that woman's skin...?
- icksturminator, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6Sure, maybe the ads will go away... but then won't the sites go away? Way to take away the profit motive.
- TheLoneWolf071, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6I don't mind regular, legit ad's, but when reputable sites display rip-offs and border-line illegal offers, that's another thing
- AriaStar, on 02/20/2008, -1/+6Pick five offers are the silver level, pick four at the gold, and then two at the platinum. I once decided to see how far I could get for an article I was writing, and at that platinum level saw the three choices included a car loan that had to be approved and used, and a home re-finance. Didn't matter what the third was because I didn't want to go into debt for a car and have no home I own to re-fi. Buying the MacBook Pro would have cost less than the interest on that car loan for a car I didn't want to buy.
So, unless you're rich, you're better off buying the items straight out.
And I once did one of those offers where you get ten friends to sign up and take an offer each for a couple bucks, and you get something. Well, I got ten, and heard back that some of them couldn't be validated, so no iPod for me. I was pissed. But that was four years ago now. - diulei, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5I've always thought that sites that rely on revenue should hook up with deal sites / companies like Woot, etc. and take a small of the sales revenues. With all the people visiting Digg, I am sure a great deal at the top in a small text link, no matter the site, would generate a huge amount of sales.
- Barbosa, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5After using Adblock on FF for so long it's easy to take it for granted (since it's so unobtrusive it's easy to forget its even there), but this reminds me how important it is. Adblock works so well I almost feel bad for using it.
- sirbeta, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5I like how the story talks about getting a free Sony TV, but the end result was a Panasonic.
- ClunkClunk, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5PithHelmet is probably the premier adblocking software for Safari. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10752/pithhel ...
- bthug7, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5I love choosing which one is J-Lo, or spotting the duck. I guess I'm alone in my ways.
- troye, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5You made a negative comment about Firefox, and Diggers love their Firefox. You have a lesson learned.
- waltpsu, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5Actually, it does work, you just have to pay attention to the details. Here's a guy who wrote about how he got a 42" plasma by jumping through all of their hoops... http://zacjohnson.com/how-to-get-a-free-42-sony-pl ...
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -1/+6The FREE product thing isn't actually a scam - Rule of Thumb
It has to be supported by Gratis Networks. They actually keep it legit, but it's still a pain in the ass. - demizer, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5CONGRATULATIONS!
- Hayaemsay, on 02/20/2008, -2/+6http://www.cracked.com/article_15888_if-banner-ads ...
- elizabethb221, on 02/20/2008, -0/+4Sometimes it happens on accident.
Maybe millions of these tiny accidents have added up into one monstrosity of an advertising scheme. - Dmaulchris, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5Don't give them ideas..
- kruptd, on 02/20/2008, -0/+4pardon me my friend, I am Nigerian royalty and I need money to enlarge our penises
- satanikus, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3If you're a lawyer doing class-action lawsuits or mass torts, chances are you're pretty scummy.
- Icyfenix, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3Middle of the night...
CONGRATULATIONS. YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO ALERT EVERYONE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD THAT YOU ARE UP LATE SURFING THE INTERNET AND FORGOT TO TURN DOWN YOUR SPEAKERS. - Swarms, on 02/20/2008, -1/+4Have you ever played the game banners, like shooting the ducks, and then stop before you shoot the last one since you know it will open the page? No? Just me? You're all liars.
- cigawoot, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3Congratulations! You've won a free** iPod Nano!
**Just spend about 1000 bucks doing stupid ***** for our sponsors and its all yours! -
