- JesperL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This, I take it, is the reason the M4A1 underbarrel shotgun attachment exists?
Shooting the loop would cause the bullet to ricochet / disintigrate, and besides, the loop is the most dense part of the lock, as far as I know. - Flyinace2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Something tells me this method of lock picking would draw a lot of attention from the neighbors.....and the police
- igrp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, people usually don't pick padlocks since it's way easier to just use a shim. Not as much fun as shooting them though...
- chrishill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wouldnt it be easier if you shot the 'loop' bit at the top of the lock, rather than the body of the lock itself? guess you'd have to be a superb shot to hit it... meh! bring on the shotguns :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shotgun is king
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not just bump it? http://www.toool.nl
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SpecFor guys usually have a team member who carries a pistol grip short-barrel shotgun to "knock" on hardened doors. While your average steel security lock isn't quite as tough as a master lock, it'll still resist a few rounds of 9mm, .45 ACP, or 5.56mm. But one double ought buck loaded cartridge will pretty much take the lock, striker, and that entire part of the door out of the equation. The other option is a small shaped charge.

He says that in the comments at the bottom. He's just trying to show that most guns shot into the body (like frequently done in movies) won't break it. - RMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty sweet.
Gotta love the shotguns. - DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can say this from experience, the Brennke is the key to this equation. Try this at ten yards with buckshot and you'd be lucky to even hit the lock with any shot. The brennke is pure evil... I recommend a rifled slug gun, preferably the Remington 870... I can't tell you how much fun it is to explode 2 liter bottles of water at 100 yards with Brennke slugs in the 870...
- slogankid1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why not shoot the top part instead of the body???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah it's like if someone's entering your house do you go for the head or the torso?

robERR: "What other inaccuracies have I let slip by and into my enormous movie-TV based knowledge?"
Too many to count. A big one is that pistol silencers are never quite as light and compact as they look on TV, don't screw on to a pistol that easy and fast, and don't in fact completely silence the shot in the vast majority of useful cases (the exception being .22LR pistols, which can get very silent, but they're also very ineffective, underpowered weapons).
Most useful "silenced" rifles will still hurt your ears without hearing protection. They do reduce the heard muzzle blast from far away though, and tend to reduce the ability of a target to determine the location you're shooting from by sound (although they don't to anything about the sonic crack of a supersonic rifle round, and every rifle round is supersonic other than those that are purpose built for subsonic suppressed shooting, which on the whole tend to have subpar ballistics).
Still on the subject of noise - generally when a normal duty pistol is fired indoors (or even outdoors in a city), the noise level is sufficient to stun and bewilder everyone in the immediate vicinity, with a loud painful ringing in their ears and temporary deafness. You rarely see that affect actors in movies. I love it when two movie cops shoot 10+ rounds inside an small enclosed room and then nonchalantly turn to each other and engage in light comedic banter about the situation. - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Chances are that whatever the lock is attached to is weaker than the lock, so forget about shooting the 'U'. Just shoot whatever the 'U' loops through.
- jman420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. I would love to see some slow video of the impact. digg+++
- victmlesscrimz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yup! Gotta love them shotguns. Although a lockpick just might be somewhat more stealthy.:)
- don613, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very good test. It was well commented and informative.
- robERR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What!? Shooting a lock like people do in the movies or TV doesn't work?? What other inaccuracies have I let slip by and into my enormous movie-TV based knowledge?
In any case, great piece. Very thorough. Kinda like those myth-buster guys (on the Discovery channel here in Canada). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Next time I'm locked out of my shed, I know what I'm gonna reach for...
- skater2968, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God I love guns! Sites like that remind me why I was placed on this planet! TO BLOW ***** UP!
- sgtkillmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0guns.... mmmmm....
- heretik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Mythbusters should do this.
- ph713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
This guy is really cool - be sure to check out his other box-o-truth tests on the same site. They're very informative if you ever wanted to know how much overpenetration through walls your favorite choice of home defense gun/ammo combination has.
Go check out the various interesting subforums on www.ar15.com for more cool stuff along the lines of that site (it's where the site owner tends to hang out - the box of truth was originally just a recurring thread he posted there). Here's a famous thread in the handgun forums on long-term torture testing of a Glock pistol with pic/video evidence: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=4&t=13658&page=1 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Ain't retirement great!" Classic!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The silent but effectively deadly method 'pcgeek101'. I'd sooner take that aproach.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hear hear vix!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Hey vixx, wake mikey up, he's supposed to come over for turkey today. Maybe point the shotgun in his window and pull da freakin trigger!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I know a few people that're so butt-ugly they could just look at the lock and it'd pop open, lol. Seriously though, I'd prefer the lockpick method, but the shotgun would be SO much more exhilarating!
