- WillSpencer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I am certain that it was Al Gore.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's such an obvious phrase, and a lot of people were doing it before the phrase had become commonplace that I bet mulitple people came up with it independently of each other's influence at the same time.
- cumbrowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thanks... but its most of the time a joined effort. Jehochman did also play some part. The topic is still lagging content in Wikipedia. Unfortunately are most people limit their contributions to adding links to their sites and blogs. The Search Engine Optimization Article gets spammed every day at least once, not counting spam bots. :(
- cumbrowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...not counting spam bots" :)
- Almadiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone who has studied anything about formal problem solving, i.e. computer science, knows that producing document search results from natural language (or something approximating it) is inherently an optimization problem. Therefore the term is not only self inventing, but redundant. It is optimizing an optimization problem.
- cumbrowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The title was chosen because the forum thread in 2004 had the same (wrong) title.
I found the thread after I removed "coined" from my query :) - Lane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2coined the term, not invented. you cant invent words by just saying it has meaning contrary to young children everywhere!
- cumbrowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2please elaborate that.
I don't think this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimization_%28mathematics%29
has much to do with it nor this.

What am I missing here. Thanks. - steviedisco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ummm, I would have thought it kind of invented itself. I think the conversation would have gone like this.
'Hey, what are you doing?'
'I'm optimising my web site for the search engines. Search engine optimising, if you will'
Hint: Optimising/Optimisation is a word often used in software development.
Sheesh. - cumbrowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gesundheit :)
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Who invented the term "banal ***** that hits the front page for absolutely no reason whatsoever" ? It sure as ***** wasn't me.
- palmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No, it IS obvious. Asking who "invented" this term is stupid grandstanding.
Who invented the term "proper tire inflation"?
Dumb. - cumbrowski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3haha.. cool.. if you have a link to a respectable source that can attest to that, I will go and add it to his article at wikipedia ;)
- CristianMezei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Once ? I thought more like 10 times per day. It's the most wanted of the articles I think.
- cumbrowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1did you read the post? It states what they called it back then.
Also the SEW post that is referred to is interesting and provides even more insights. - CristianMezei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just don't want to raise your flag too much Carsten, but I think that wikipedia article you made is really GOOD. Thank for actually beeing amongst the few who actually cares for the quality there. :)
- jeffyjones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It was some hack "consultant" who wanted to scam people out of money.
- CristianMezei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not that obvious. It could've become "search engine marketing" , "web marketing", "site marketing" or anythign else. Instead all of the previous derived from SEO.
- jrstratford, on 07/19/2009, -0/+0I won't take credit, but it was the logical thing for optimizing the results in the serch engines in the early 90's. A friend and I even had a system for AOL and compuserve back then. :) But it wasn't me, it was two friends discussing what they were doing to systemize their results through optimization. :) As far as main stream it'd be the 1st techies that talked about it in a forum context. We used to talk about it in the secret warriors forum in the early to mid 1990's appx 1994. In fact if the archives weren't destroyed the material proof will be in there from Allan Says. Some food for thought! I wish I had kept some of the discussions as dart1@thespa.com.
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1so it wouldn't have come out as...
website optimization? but search engine...
what do you call when google optimized their search engine then?
this title is too lame to even click on the article. - bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wikiality :)
- ralanyo, on 05/27/2009, -0/+0Darn. And I thought I invented it. Ha Thanks for the history.

- Starble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't really see why it matters. Who invented sliced bread?
- briddell, on 03/01/2008, -0/+0A bit occult for all but the initiated in SEO. Thanks for the history lesson!
http://gatewayservices.net/SEO.html - rockerdoll, on 05/24/2009, -0/+0Take a look at this site:

The guy claims to have invented the term SEO. Another Jason Gambert? - flashpitt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Bill Slawsky? ...I believe it was Bill Brasky!
- CristianMezei, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I believe you believe wrong.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Christ, who cares?
