We're not all bad, mkay? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+75The president couldn't find enough seeds for his torrents
- info, on 10/12/2007, -10/+63Problem is the US gov't is allowing itself to be overthrown by big business...
This is from today's posting on Jim Hightower's blog...
"...There's another, very real, but very quiet, siege taking place on our people's government... from within. Far from being a movement of desperate poor people, this assault on democracy is being mounted by extremely wealthy and powerful guys in pinstripe suits..."
How apropos! Read the whole article here...

Hey sweden.. I'm sorry our president is a monkey. - moondog, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Not saying I am in favor of the white house decision...but the swedes should get some balls and not take orders from us! They need to serve the people that elected them to government...
One could argue that the American government was at least serving the interest of some small constituency (MPAA), probably not the majority. But the swedes were serving none of their constituency. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29I love how the US has its priorities in order. Gay marage and the pirate bay get the most attention? Thats so ***** up.
- critic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24The "American" White House? You mean the one where the president lives?
Come on! Bush probably has no idea WTF the "Pirate Bay" is.
Get Real! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22"Hey hey hey, don't lump me in with my govt. This is not the govt I voted for."
I'll agree, there. I *voted* for Bush and I'm not getting the kind of government I voted for...and there's a lot more pissed off voters like me out there. I have a feeling that the Republicans are going to get their asses handed to them in November. - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -34/+52They're not bullying anyone or trying to stop anyone from having free speech. They're trying to protect their economic interests by protecting American copyright holders. The Pirate Bay exists to infringe upon copyrights.
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20"One of the functions of the government is to protect its economy (within reason)."
You said it yourself...'WITHIN REASON".
It is NOT the governments job to pass legislation to keep broken business models alive. - labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23The united status government is a very good system in theory.
When this system is taken off the paper and turned into a governement process, it breaks down.
This breakdown occurs due to human greed.
Companies find it easier to bribe the congressmen than to comply to laws. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15It's easy to lose sight of the key difference between content and other propertizable things.
Content can be taken into the mind. Other propertizable things cannot.
One can sing a song from memory. One cannot synthesize a drug just because it's been administered to them - pfunked, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18*MPAA promises a campaign contribution*
Bush: "Oh, THAT Pirate's Bay!" - RexKwando, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26It's not like the white house has anything better to spend its time on... err.. wait... there is that whole war thing that they have going on?!
- eosp, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26i'd take a monkey over bush any day.
- nomad111, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Government and Big business are interchangeable words in America.
- Grig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Anyone even read the article? No real evidence for the claim is presented, and the only place the white house is mentioned is the headline.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17>URGH! Why are Americans such damn bullies?
we aren't all bullies. in fact, most... at least half of us feel bullied. i can tell you for sure that it feels criticizing bush by those that don't like what is going on-feels scary. like McCarthyism on steroids. i think that number is growing by the looks of most approval polls
. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@right75
Hell, man. I'm sick of the Republicans, too. If they get trashed in November, they deserve it because they've abandoned their core values. They've become nothing more than one side of a two-headed coin that we flip every time we vote.
That's why I've gone Libertarian. The only reason I voted for Bush in the last election was because I thought Kerry would have been a DISASTER for this country. If the Dems would have had some kind of moderate running on their side, I would have voted for Michael Badnarik.
More people need to start voting on the actual issues instead of party line. Partisanship will be the death knell of politics in this country. Also, people need to abandon the two major parties en masse and vote for 3rd party candidates. Maybe then the big boys up here in DC will get a clue. - maczealot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17*roll of the eyes* Ok, I love the Pirate Bay, I agree that copyright law and the like needs a major overhaul. However this article is looooooong on speculation and VERY short on facts. All it really says is what we could have guessed ourselves. The "communique" from the U.S. gov't to the Swedish gov't came *GASP* via the U.S. Embassy :P which, probably got its info from the State Dept., which of course is run by the Executive Branch... hence this link to the "White House"
The U.S. is NOT a bully, I am sick of that label personally because if we were a BULLY we'd not have used an Embassy or anything remotely approaching DIPLOMACY (i.e. our gov't suggested the financial benefits of shutting down the PirateBay for Sweden far outweighed the drawbacks). No, as a BULLY we'd have said "Shut them down or we'll just bomb their Network Ops Center."
I agree that this is VERY low on the list of things that I want my tax dollars (i.e. my elected representatives) doing BUT it is hardly the alllllllll invasive bullying tactic that it is being flamed into. Do not think for one second that other gov'ts don't say similar things to the U.S.
Welcome to International Trade boys and girls. - waykohler, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15"Oh well, if you really miss thepiratebay, I'd suggest mininova -- it's in no way equivilent, but does the job."
The pirate bay is still around. try http://www.piratebay.org/ - aroedl, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14He might not have an idea what PirateBay is, but somebody told him that it is part of the axis of evil.
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11forsitay,
Why on earth would a country be admitted into the WTO when they don't respect world trade? I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong here, but seriously this isn't just an American thing... England and many other European nations would have pulled the same strings if their corporation's works were being massively copied. America just happens to be the leading producer of entertainment. - Takayama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"The united status government is a very good system in theory."
Just so is communism :)
Postscriptum to the right-wing ***** who will comment about my political views based on the statement above: Go read about "sarcasm" on an wikipedia clone of your choice before typing. - DJMajickman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13@Geterix
OK sure we'll give you everything for free. Oh!!! But here's the catch. You're not allowed to be paid for the rest of your life for any work you do. After all you don't wanna pay the programmer for his work why should anyone pay you for your work. Sounds fair to me. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19"I'm so glad the U.S. did this. Ripping artists off by not paying them is sickeningly selfish."
well a) you can't 'rip somethign off' that wan't there to begin with and b) WTF do you think the RIAA does?
"I'm sure all the freeloaders will get bitter that the free ride is taken away, but we should always fight to protect the civil rights of artists."
If you want to protect the 'civil rights of artists' then DON'T support the **AA. - tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You got to be the biggest dumb ass to hit the interent in a few months.
- ozydingo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"URGH! Why are Americans such damn bullies? "
"Problem is the US gov't is allowing itself to be overthrown by big business..."
It's really appalling that our (US) government's actions (ya know, the gov't "by the people, for the people") are not at all representing the American people's interests. This huge powerful body, that should be deriving its power from the American people, has completely taken its power to use for its own end. I'm not a political activist, but I may soon become one. - Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I like how the article states that many of the files on TBP are copyrighted, I didn't know you could copyright a tracker.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8i remember bonchbonchbonch.. did the bonchbonch account get deleted, or did you close it? should we expect to have a user named 'bonchbonchbonchbonch' humor us with uninformed sarcasm in the near future?
i wonder if bonchbonch, bonchbonchbonch, and Geterix are all the same person...
all have no idea what they're talking about, and use poorly conceived satire to try to get their point across..
go ahead.. bring up something you claim Tool said. we're listening... wish you'd do some research, though.. - ratzfatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Seems to me that you honest US citizens are going to suffer from political forces we Germans have suffered some decades ago. I honestly stay with your open minded mentality and feel sorry for processes which went "out of control". I know you can turn the steering wheel well. It might take some time. But I'm sure it will. You'll vote somewhat different I guess? Sorry for my insufficient English. That's because I'm a German - trying to do my best to let you know that the power shall be YOU. Not the government.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@matt
So imposing sanctions is "within reason"? - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Then get the ***** out, right along with Geterix. You ***** pathetic idiots.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6what a stupid response. you are throwing around your blasphemous satire so blindly that you don't even see THE issue here. nobody is saying copyright infringement is right or just. you are a ***** retard (sorry for being blunt) for thinking that. the issue is that TPB is NOT infringing on copyrights. using the site, you can find people who have what you're looking for, and get it from them. if it is copyrighted, the peer you are downloading from is breaking the law for redistributing something without consent.
here's the issue: american corporation complained to american government. american government forced swedish government to shut it down. TPB is back up why? because it is NOT illegal and they had no right to take it down. plus, the order came from the top of the swedish government, which is illegal (they can change policy, but not issue direct orders to enforce said policies).
in summary, Geterix: grow up, wise up, and shut up - jm9206755, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The US Constitution only applies within United States territory. Unfortunately for your argument, TPB is in Sweden.
- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Right back at ya' you hippie. You really make yourself sound smart by flying off the cuff cursing like that. Sounds really mature and intelligent. Way to make your side of the argument sound logical.
- joelhardi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7OK, on the one hand it's the U.S. government's job to represent American trade interests abroad. When countries like China wink at piracy, it's our government's job to do something about it.
But in this case we have something that's almost a constitutional crisis for the people in Sweden. You have a bunch of police raids carried out against a bunch of people who weren't actually breaking any law (Pirate Bay just links to other people's torrents). AND the raids were instigated by the RIAA or other foreign corporate interests -- and possibly even (as this story says) a foreign government.
If that happened in the U.S., people would go nuts. For instance, If the FBI shut down the offices of Wine Spectator and seized all their assets -- even though they weren't doing anything wrong -- because the big French wine conglomerates and French government ordered it, people would be burning French flags and we'd all be eating freedom fries again. - Shish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7> You are stealing, pure and simple.
Sure I am. So when I'm the one committing a crime, why is the US government going after a perfectly legal organisation in Sweden? - epheterson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't understand why The Pirate Bay in particular is being attacked. There are many more torrent sites out there that are also very popular. If this is a fight against illegal torrents, you'd think they would attack at least the top three sites.
- Shish, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"Bullying" != "Use of physical force"
Dropping trade could do far more long term damage than a few bombing runs - D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Yarrr, scurvy!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11"Come on! Bush probably has no idea WTF the "Pirate Bay" is."
Yes he does, He right now torrenting some Johnny Cash Tunes. - BIGGY350z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Probably doing it just to start *****, so few points for creativity...mostly comes off as an idiot though.
- nuble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5as much as this disgusts me, i do agree that whatever crap the US government pulls off shouldn't be blamed on the people. not entirely, at least.
i am not american, nor am i familiar with your political system, but aren't there "congressmen" which represent states(or something) that are reachable by the masses? or at least when they try hard enough? not liking what the government is doing is one thing, but doing nothing about it is a whole different thing.
if your boos are muffled by cheers from (stupid, clueless)people 10 times your number, then DO scream 10 times louder. please. - GruntboyX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Dont put the Blame on the American Government. They are protecting their "interests" in the same way members of the pirate party are "protecting" theirs. The people at fault is the swedish government. They paniced and illegally shut down the site according to their own laws. They should have gone through the proper channels and changed the law and given TPB time to comply. In the same manner Russia is treating Allofmp3.com. Dont blame the white house here. The people that screwed the pooch is authorities in swedish government.
- PurpleMeteor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Actually, BitTorrent is PERFECT for Indie bands which don't have the money to pay for bandwidth. Indie fans can help with their own bandwidth. As for your BitTorrent problem, you have to open a few ports before to let other users connect to your computer, read some FAQ on the subject (I get 400kB/s most of the time)
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Hah! Look at the store link at the bottom of thepiratebay.org.

I have to admire you --- you must be the most insane person on digg. One question, how do you post so often? Do you work? Are you 15 and enjoying summer vacation?
Anyway, keep it up. Even though you get modded down I enjoy reading your freak comments. - TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Welcome to the United States of Oligarchy.
We aren't so much moving to facism as we are moving to the wealthy control, though I'm sure ar rights will continue to get vioalted we need to asses our threats. Which do we tackle first? Big brother, or big business? Though if we got the current people out of office and got people in there that listen to the people (the government is an extension of the people, not a seperate entity) I'm sure both problems would be gone.
