- FaceBookEconomy, on 10/16/2007, -1/+29or, in the case of digg, "I shout, you listen!"
- umbriago, on 10/16/2007, -0/+11When Does a Social Network Become a "Publicity Network"? When it launches.
- kamikaze87, on 10/16/2007, -1/+11I scream, you scream.
We all scream for ice cream. - theforrester, on 10/15/2007, -0/+7When its name is MySpace.
- ChrisF79, on 10/15/2007, -2/+8Great point. I have a facebook account and I only put my closest friends on there (the group I usually spend my weekends with, etc). Right now that's about 17 people. They post occassionally and it is really overwhelming sometimes. Just corresponding with those people about weekend events, dinners throughout the week, etc takes up at least 15 minutes per day. I don't want to add more facebook friends because I really don't have the time to deal with them. Now, if I were using it as a publicity tool, I too would add as many as possible but that's definitely not the intention of the Facebook site.

- kamikaze87, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3My mind just exploded with the amount of irony contained in your post. Thank you sir.
- yasmary, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3When everyone wants one. Seems its a 'get on the bandwagon' thing.
- spinchange, on 10/15/2007, -2/+4argh, *typically
- ahpro, on 10/15/2007, -1/+3Its a bit like the famous people on myspace like bands and stuff but i think its quite fun. Quite cool to see how celebs have other celebs on eachothers front pages aswell lol.
- mt066, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2I don't know what the point is here. So social networking sites might fit some businessman's definition of a "publicity network." What does that mean? You can use them to spam people with whatever you're selling? I think everyone knows that already. Besides, just like any other relationship, if you overstep the bounds and spam everyone all the time, you're just going to get ignored anyways. So it's nothing special.
- picsectionpleez, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1when bloggers take over by submitting their ***** blogs every five minutes
- geminitojanus, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1Or Digg, for that matter.
- themilk, on 10/15/2007, -1/+2the great thing about facebook, digg, twitter, pownce, myspace, jaiku and all the others is when you don't like someone spamming, you ask them to tone it down or you un-friend them and put them on ignore. this is a none issue.
- tekrat, on 10/16/2007, -1/+2I've been getting the same problem - http://digg.com/business_finance/General_Motors_Gr ...
- spinchange, on 10/15/2007, -2/+2By the money quote definition, Scoble's twitter account is not a publicity network. Anyone who follows him knows that the dialog is very much "two way" with him. Mashable and some of the other examples cited are clearly publicity networks.
Ironically, take a guy like Jason Calacanis who is typical thought of as the "Mr. PitchMan" of the internet. His twitter posts typical consist of things, like "watching football on tivo" "just got done working out" "at the airport"
-- No matter how much you like or admire him, it's not exactly press release material.
All that being said, If someone's "all shouts and no diggs" I think we know what we're dealing with. - CheeseburgerBro, on 10/15/2007, -1/+1Right about...NOW!
http://cheeseburgerbrown.com - jensgulich, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0It worked for "Robert" as "Publicity Network" or as self marketing tool, otherwise I wouldn't know about him know ...
- hiPpymIck, on 10/15/2007, -2/+1doesnt JCalacanis always seem to be trying to jump ahead and create a middle tier of the internets
