What happens when you reach the 2GB limit in Gmail
me.brajeshwar.com — A description of what exactly happens when you hit the 2GB limit in Gmail. Looks like Google lied when they said "No one will ever need to delete mails."
- 296 diggs
- digg it
- prototypeangel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20There are of course solutions to running out of space for email. Another thing this guy could've done is waited for a few minutes and gotten another mb. Then he can get another mail.
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23I think it takes more than a minute for an MB.
- zttrx, on 10/12/2007, -13/+55WWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA MY FREE EMAIL SERVICE ISNT GOOD ENOUGH@#$%@$%@#$%
Moron. - saudukargeneral, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23ungrateful bitch
- expiredmeatbag, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19now everybody on digg is gonna email him an internet, and since his tubes are filled he wont receive them for days!
- siodine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/7664/problemfu7.jpg
Well, THERE'S your problem. - pwill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22@siodine:
For people that can't read pixelated text, that says "Spam (5252)"
This moron has 5,000 spam messages, and he's complaining that he's running out of space. What an idiot. - ggoyal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Also, its unbelievable how one can get that much spam in 30 days!
- Barleyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Just switch to "google for your domain" like I did and get 15GB
http://blog.eberly.org/2006/12/09/how-to-convert-your-gmail-capacity-from-2-3gb-to-15gb/ - shokk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have an idea... delete the mail you don't need!
You can't possibly need all that mail readily at hand. Use the POP function and download it all and keep it on your hard drive. I will be just as searchable with Google Desktop.
Want to back it up? Then use a free service like Mozy or XDrive. Stop bitching about not getting a free ride for your ignorance. - returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"ungrateful bitch"
Right... Google gives us free mail out of the kindness of their own heart. - ElMoselYEE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1so if BMW gave you and millions of other people free cars (brand new, unused) in an attempt to make more money, you'd feel you have the right to complain that it gets bad gas mileage because you never bothered to get a tune-up?
- latova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+58Geez, how did you ever manage back when we had hotmail with 2mb? Start removing the crappy emails which you don't need, simple solution. I'm sure you'll somehow survive without them.
- Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Email is not meant to be used as storage space for all your crappy files. Stop your friends from sending you that "hilarious" mp3 or video file and just send a link to it in the message.
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52what the hell, is this guy whining that 2.79 GIGABYTES isn't enough?
how long ago was it when Hotmail was 25 MB?- burnt1ce85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2825mb? dont you mean 2mb?
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Believe it or not, but back in the day (I can't believe I'm saying this) freemail services like Yahoo and Hotmail didn't suck. If it weren't for Google coming out and scaring the competition *****, we'd probably be in the kilobyte inbox range right now.
Although, 2.75gb.... if you're using up that me space for email, you're either doing backups, unfiltering your spam, or something not considered 'sensible use'. - monkeychewtoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Back in MY day it was only ONE megabyte. Same with Yahoo! But oddly enough, before my day, Yahoo was 10 megabytes. 'Friend of mine had one of those early accounts, and this was well before Gmail ever existed, so we were always, "Ooh, ten times the space..."
Anyway, thank Google for Gmail, and if you really need three gigabytes when the average email's only 3k, then you're ***** out of luck, friend. - lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Talk about ungrateful. He gets a service that tells him up front that it has a 2 gig limit. He hits the limit, complains that they wont let him write more mail, and loudly begs for more space? Umm, yeah this is on the front page of digg why?
- zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26There are delete all trash and spam buttons ya know?
- acidhash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21If he needs to keep that much email, he should stop being such a cheapskate and host it himself.
- clackerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44wait a minute - you mean when your gmail quota fills up you can't send or receive emails? WHAT A ***** SHOCKER.
- nevenmrgan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22But... but... when he paid for his GMail service, it specifically said, "You will never need to delete any email."
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -26/+4I use Garfield Mail; the original Gmail.
http://www.e-garfield.com/email/scripts/loginuser.pl- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -18/+6Before being acquired by Google, the gmail.com domain name was used by the free e-mail service offered by Garfield.com
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3Garfield RULES, digg kiddies. Rules all your miserable asses. You wish you were half as content as that fat cat.
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3digg me down some more! You know it makes you feel in control of your lasagnaless lives!
DIGG ME DOWN! MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER! YOU CAN'T ESCAPE THE HORRIBLE TRUTH! - Bean945, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Calm down.
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1...
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14How much porn do you have to sign up for to get so many emails...geezz
- johnder, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7lame. doesn't really explain what happens, and not only that he is posting pictures of all his emails , spammers delight.
- rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5He could delete the emails out of his SENT folder.
What a whiner. It's free, buddy. You get what you pay for. In this case, you get more than you pay for.- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He could also delete some of the old mailing list emails. When will you *ever* read any of them (again)?
..or delete the 5000+ unread emails from the spam folder..
- Ben
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He could also delete some of the old mailing list emails. When will you *ever* read any of them (again)?
- pmace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Open another gmail account and forward all the old stuff to it.
- henryclay, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0The time where we can pay google for extra space can't be too far away...Basic services are free...super duper extra services cost money...
- richlizard24, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4This guy needs to get rid of the penis enlargement e-mails he has been holding on to.
- lothar250, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1"Google promised Gmail users that—No one will ever need to delete mails!. So, let me not delete my mails, Please give me more Space."
What an idiot! That's just because his friends send him porn and stuff by mail and he's got his 2.7gb used. - karn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3He was probably using his gmail account with one of those online harddrive plugins. Now he's shocked when he runs out of space?? Idiot
- bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I like the line…
"I would like to request Google to give me more Gmail Storage Space."
Google's Responce…
"You greedy bastard!" - deuceswilde, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Who dugg this? not only is it not interesting it's not useful because anyone could figure out solutions to this problem.
- acenasty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Seriously what do you expect, they should probably open up another 2gb for you since you are paying them such a premium for this service... They said you could keep your email not all your attachments give gmail a break it's a great service for FREE.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Dumb.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4All his e-mails are blocking up the tubes!
- silver31u, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Wow, I must have great friends that don't email me crap. Plus I do delete spam and stuff I know I'll never need. Been using Gmail since June 2004 and only using 17% of my limit.
- Nonoboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I'd like to pull off a lot of my old emails but want to keep them on my PC. Does anyone know of a good way to keep an email from gmail onto your PC? Other than forwarding the email to another account. Thanks for the help.
- joey7855, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Enable POP access in your gmail settings and use a program such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Outlook to download and archive them.
- Nonoboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1thanks! I'll try that.
- TheToecutter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Here's a tip dumbass...delete your e-mail or save your attachments. Gmail isn't a place to store your crap.
- tornsuits, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1this is just stupid.
- evensong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I have over two years of CNN, Slashdot, BBC, and NY Times DAILY subscriptions. I have yet to use over 200MB. To use 2GBs, you clearly must be using Gmail for storage space. While this is not illegal in Gmail's TOS, I think it would be funny if Google deleted his 2GB collection of porn and warez.
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I think he should ask for his money back on the service.
Oh, except that they delivered; all 2.79GB is in use.
And it's freeeee! - PantherX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Seriously... it's a BETA!
This means use at your own risk.
Secondly, you're an idiot for having 2GB of email. Delete some of it. - shibz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2why is everyone flaming this guy for filling up his mailbox and asking for more space? He was just reporting what happens when you do something that Google says should never happen...
- resplence, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Look at his labels. So much crap mail.
That's just like when I got my 120gb hdd. My first thought was 'Oh my god, it will never end!'. When you have that much space is amazing the load of crap you eventually think is worth keeping. - SCMacUser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I think we're all spoiled by GMail. Corporate and University mail services, you're lucky to have half a gig.
- DooDooFace, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What a loser.
- Kickboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I've been using GMail since about 1 month after it was first released in private beta. I am only using about 37MB.
Anyway, I don't see how you could expect your storage to magically increase to 3GB when you run out of storage. If your dumb enough to use all your GMail space, don't be bitching to Google about it. - Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3
Somebody Runs out of email space and that's a news story?
Am I the only one who doesn't digg this?- kcopp87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I buried it.
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well if he would stop getting PORN and illegal MP3's and movies in his e-mail then he would not have a problem!
- q3ctf4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not just the size that matters, it's how well you use it. Backup Backup Backup.
- kcopp87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am currently using 1 MB of my 2792 MB. :/
I could understand if he was doing this just for the sake of curiosity, but actually thinking that Google owes him storage space?
Idiot. - SimonDonkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also once reached 100% due to a bug in a popular email client that kept trying to send an email, gmail failed to send it but kept it in it's send folder. The email client then tried again as it's request failed over and over again.
The very short summary. You need space in order to send an email so it can be put in your send folder. You get an informative error explaining this if you try to send a message. People's email bounce back if you are out of space with a note about space shortage. That's all there's to it. Why is this on the front page again? - 4th3157, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is spooky.
I logged on to my Gmail account this afternoon and noticed that I'd used 10% of my total capacity. I immediately wondered what happens when the limit it reached.
The very next site I visited was Original Signal (digg section) and there, right at the top (well, on the left), the very first story was 'What happens when you reach the 2GB limit in Gmail'.
The Internet fairies are at it again. - tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So I was bored and decided to add up all the unread mail (the stuff that was in a folder that I could see, not counting spam). I counted 63,271 unread messages. Honestly, that would be about 173 email a day. I don't think he could possibly use this much, but I dunno. And seriously, why would you complain. There is a limit and he should know that, and there is no way that he needs all of those emails.
- F399SF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's no excuse to whine about not having space when you literally don't delete ANYTHING. Just because Gmail uses that tagline doesn't mean you shouldn't delete crap. There was some crappy little blog story on how to "recover space" in Gmail a few weeks back. This guy had a rule set up to ARCHIVE the stupid forwards he always gets from a coworker. His brilliant tip was to go ahead and delete all those.
