- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47more importantly, what is the chances of you still being sued even after the RIAA knows you are dead.
- nibble128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Has anyone been sued for torrenting?
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29I don't know, but I've heard that the chances of dying in a car accident on the way to buy a lottery ticket are higher than the chances of winning the lottery.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The bad things is most people get scared and just settle. Really if everyone demanded court, the riaa wouldhave time to get through its current suits.
- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14actually your chances for getting sued and dying are not that big on their own. but i can promise you, your odds of death is 100% but as anyone who has taken logic knows: sued (true/false) AND death (true) cannot be determined
sorry, i'm a math freak - paranoidfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11it's a civil suit.
- Refrozen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11(1/1755) * (1/1840) = chance of getting sued and dying (though, not necessarily in that order, unfortunately)
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Because this is Digg V3.
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Sir, Your comment is much like a comment I've seen before. I daresay you are a duplicate.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Well that's ok then. For the statisticians out there whats my chances of getting sued then dying?
/RTFA - quokkapox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is a drastic oversimplification.
What if you're using an updated peer guardian or other IP range blocker? What if you're only downloading and not sharing? Your odds of getting sued drop even more.
The more free wifi hotspots keep proliferating, the harder it will become for the MPAA/RIAA to get anyone except for the low-hanging fruits. - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have an easier question, and an even easier answer: "What are the odds that I will purchase anything produced by RIAA members?" Answer: "About 1 in 6.5 billion."
- Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The main part is being sued - they like to threaten but if you respond with any sort of competence and confidence they usually seem to back down.
- Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This was a very interesting article but it doesn't make me feel any safer from getting sued by those greedy AA's.
- towle_42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Amen to that. But what if you throw in the chances of getting sued for movie, TV or softwear piracy. You know i'm a fan of all 4
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In other news, the likelyhood of high school students illegally downloading music are about one in two.
Maybe higher. - diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What about if you wouldn't buy the music anyway? I stopped buying Cd's when it came out they ripping off consumers and fixing prices a few years ago. No monetary loss from me, I'd still be listening to the radio if P2P wasn't around.
- Dementual, on 01/27/2008, -0/+4This is the biggest load off my back, ever.
- Nick42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The odds are a lot lower if you use MUTE. - http://mute-net.sourceforge.net/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can tell you your odds practically octuple (couldn't think of higher ratio thing) if you go to college. When you're on the university network, you're in a "known IP range", the ones that their computers scan torrents for. I've been caught once at Georgia Tech...thankfully we have a 3-strikes policy.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Inaccurate. The RIAA dont only sue peple who pirate. They can sue anyone and everyone. So, take 6 billion instead of 12 million. That is the real odds
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3god i wish the guy who writes that "news" over at slyck.com would LEARN TO WRITE or hire an editor.
- zoxed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am not a mathematition but why divide the number of users in the *world* by the number of people sued by a *US* agency ?
(OK, maybe I am just a pedantic European :-) - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, considering that I'm Canadian, the chances are nill :D
- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg because it's a good read, but let's be honest: This is old news, and nowhere near obscure. I even remember reading the article when it was first published on Slyck.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Get your insurance quick!
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@nibble128
I was under the impression that the RIAA was unable to sue someone who downloaded/uploaded only a piece of music and not the whole file, if this is infact the case well, isn't it somewhat hard to prove someone "stole" an entire song if lets say they only downloaded/uploaded only a small piece that the RIAA was able to track? Just don't quote me on that, just heard it blowing in the wind... somewhere on the net. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@hodyoaten
Did you know Kevin left the band????!!?!?!?!?!??!?!
OH NOES! - hodyoaten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Your odds of being sued by the RIAA are gonna be a hell of a lot less if you secure your wireless access point. I can't think of anything lamer than to get sued, only to find out your neighbor is a Backstreet Boys fanboy.
- mattrmcg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wonder what the odds of the RIAA realizing that they are the steps back for the progression of mankind this year are
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can the RIAA still sue you if you disable file sharing with other users and simply freeload the crap out of the P2P system? I'm not sure, but I think they can only get you for uploading...i might be wrong. In any case, the safest bet is to just rip some streams from shoutcast in my opinion. I listen to lots of underground and most the stations are commercial free and pretty good quality for what I got, so no worries here.
But I'd like to see an expected monetary value for free music versus a possible lawsuit instead of a simple stat like this. What about the heavier users? Are their chances higher? - Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sort of Satan's Lottery
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha. further proof the riaa has sharing "contained". that's a better joke than "mission accomplished"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I once got a Cease and Desist order from my old IPS Charter but ever since I switched over to a new ISP "linksys" which seems to have access points everywhere I am and at no charge, I haven't gotten one yet.
I think my chances of getting sued with this new ISP are pretty slim. - lokean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FastTrack
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was a joke you *****. :-P
hehe, Oh well: at least 7 other people understood me. - DAC1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you think commenting on a story/article like this increased my chances of th RIAA tracking me down and suing me? We all know it's all random selection anyway (like the old lady without a computer, and the woman with a Mac).
- Randlemen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Should I be worried about file sharing or dying ?
- astroid0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ROFL
- LonesomePhreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it also has to do with the kinds of music you download. Your chances are far higher downloading 50 Cent than downloading VNV Nation...
- briang2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's FastTrack?
- krugerpr0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I love statistics like :)
- UserAgent, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Looks like I should start going through all the articles on digg and submitting all the links in them. They'll make it to the front page and anyone that points it out will get dug down!
silly diggers...
oh yea, noneloud, it wasnt "much like" another article. It was the exact same one. - spengy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Because it's interesting.
- Ikioi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@m00kie
Yeah, cause everyone knows that "Negro Lifers" scare geeks way more than "Cracka Lifers" who want to mouth rape them. (that was sarcasm) - abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8Why are all these OLD stories returning to digg?
This one is from May 2, 2005 - abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2And how does that justify news that is over a year old to be submitted?
- Celsius032, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4This was a link that was in a recent top story, good effort their buddy.
http://digg.com/tech_news/P2P_insurer_will_pay_your_fines_if_RIAA_sues_$19_year! - m00kie, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5I'm just not personally thrilled about get ass raped in some Federal prison with saliva from some bruthaz mouth just before he gives me his rendition of "Do you think I'm sexy?" for downloading digital media files illegally.
I mean that's what this is all going to come down to.
If the RIAA WERE SMART MARKETING TYPES ------- they'll have a commercial with some 325 pound Negro Lifer pointin' at his junk sayin' : Can't wait til you be suckin' on my iPod white boy"
Well, get back to downloading all that music, don't forget, you're entitled. - UserAgent, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3Interesting. This article was linked to in another article that was on digg today
http://digg.com/tech_news/P2P_insurer_will_pay_your_fines_if_RIAA_sues_$19_year!
so I guess it's a semi-dupe.
Edit: I was beaten to it
