What Do You Get When You Mix Kurt Cobain's Suicide Letter & Google Adsense?
beigerecords.com — Well if Google had been around when Kurt was contemplating suicide, he may still be here. Interesting experiment nevertheless....

- ReBeLaCe, on 10/12/2007, -29/+45Wow I have never read that. Kurt Cobain was a great musician and I can understand the not having fun anymore. But I dont think I could kill myself because of all the the things in that letter. R.I.P. Kurt.
- OAKsider, on 10/12/2007, -21/+15First time reading the entire 'suicide' note also, very revealing. Omitting the last four lines (questionably Kurt) wouldn't have me believe he wanted to end it all. Depressed, wanting to leave performing, sure but not suicidal.
Adsense would have only bought him a ticket home earlier, all I see are ads for SSRIs, lame quizzes and Oprah references. Great work, Google. - chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I always thought that everything before that last part of the letter was about him breaking up the band. Really, if you cut out the bottom part, it would make total sense.
Supposedly the original letter that last part was written in a different style handwriting compared to the rest of the letter. Some believe that it is proof he was murdered instead, with the killer adding that last part to trick everyone into thinking it was a suicide.
Of course it could be the lethal dose of heroin that caused him to write differently and then pull the trigger. I can't imagine he would have good enough control to write normally at that point. Who knows.
We will never know... - Four20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuva:Kurt_cobain%27s_death_letter.jpg
direct link to a scanned copy of the original letter - skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Lots of people don't think he did himself in but was actually murdered. Two books have been written on it and there are some sites with some really interesting information / police reports / audio recordings and whatnot. Probably wont ever know what really happened with the guy, but it makes for an interesting read if you're bored and like a good mystery / "whodunit".

http://www.cobaincase.com - jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -7/+75I have Greasemonkey installed with the block AdSense script so at first I had no idea what the ***** was going on.
- hammydude, on 10/12/2007, -28/+5Can somebody please explain what is going on...I am really tired and my mind is not working... is there supposed to be humerous adsense ads on that page? because I blocked adsense ads...
- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -16/+29don't dig cheney down. suicide is very selfish. you think your going to be floating over people as they go "oh poor ____, we never appreciated him while he was here." no, you're not floating over them, you're dead, and while you no longer exist, people who still cared for you are greatly saddened.
- j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -25/+10What a self- rightous cry baby......he is and always will be an idiot......srry fanboys but its true.....hes an ass ....leaving behind his family cause he cant take life.....GET OFF THE FN DRUGS THEN RETARD.....o well......better for all of us .....

Ha, I clicked your link then ran a search for Kurt Cobain. When I pulled up the article I thought it had been vandalised for a few seconds!
http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Cobain - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Try shooting smack for a decade.
Anyway, this crap doesn't work for me because I have adblock. All I see is the letter. - tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6One word: Open in IE Tab XD
- smedstadc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Don't defend CHENEY... sounds like a troll.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Anyone have a screenshot? Adblock is for the lose in this one case.
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@CHENEYTHEDICK, @kevinmotel: It's typical that people who commit suicide were previously suicidal (doh!). 90% of the time these people have suicidal impulses that are very clear and are subconsciously calling out for help to the people that are close to them; whether it be their wife, mom, dad, or friends. One could say that these people neglected these signs and dismissed it as something that may pass like the flu or a cold. One could say that all of the people in his life saw the signs but were just too selfish to do anything for him. They saw the signs, did nothing, now they're feeling the pain.
- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2http://www.cobaincase.com
he didnt commit suicide. read up. this site is by the detective who was originally assigned to the case.

http://www.justiceforkurt.com - bonk2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Its real easy for people to call people who kill themselves "pussies" and whatnot, but once you really understand depression, you'll understand that its not just "being sad all the time." Depression is a disease. A fatal one at that. When someone is depressed, there is no logic behind it. Its not easy to reason your way out of a depressing situation, because depresion is caused by chemical imbalance. Basically what this means is that when your brain is receiving information, if receptors in your brain that receive sadness are stronger, you will look at a situation with a rather pessimistic view. Thats what depression is. Its not a way to get people to notice you. Its not a way to escape from ***** people put up with everyday, because depression amplifies that *****.
This is coming from someone who has been struggling with depression for some time. My goal really is just to raise awareness that depression isnt just something made up by emo kids, but a full blown serious disease that distorts your thinking and causes you to do things that most people wouldnt even think about. So think next time you want to call someone who commits suicide a pussy.
- BobNobody, on 10/12/2007, -4/+55I wouldn't mind finding out later how much money this page makes.
- shoover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Yea, kudo's to the OP - he found a way to embed ads in an article and make us interested in viewing it. If it were just the letter, we would have dugg him to oblivion...
Genius! - origclubsoda, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2not much if it gets digged and nobody clicks the ads. Digging an adsense site is death.
- xymor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0I don't see ads for anti-depressive or guns.
I think google adsense isn't that sensitive, or they are just passing on great business oportunities letting stuff like the law and moral coming before their capitalist principles. Shame on you google!
- shoover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Yea, kudo's to the OP - he found a way to embed ads in an article and make us interested in viewing it. If it were just the letter, we would have dugg him to oblivion...
- aerofan897, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Also my fist time reading the letter, which seems more interesting than the adsense stuff...
Speaking of that, I had forgotton what ads looked like (thanks adblock + filterset.g!) - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48Lame, I see no ads, oh wait...
- bightchee, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5I had to use Safari on my girlfriend's G5 tower to see what the link was about.
- phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17this is the first time IE has made me smile.
- CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35Not if he uses Adblock.
- elShaggy, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7That page seeems kind of demeaning to Mr Cobain, sickening to know someone is blatantly trying to make money off of this. And that isn't the letter of someone sucidal, in my opinion, depressed yes. But not someone ready to end their life. I think he was killed. Probably by, or arranged by Courtney Love.
- Po0py, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9And your speaking, of course, from experience?
- 1longtime, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I agree, I can't believe someone is making money off of Cobain's suicide letter. I feel dirty for even clicking this link and boosting someone's AdSense income.
(Sidenote: I'm going to believe it was suicide until someone can prove otherwise. Lay off Courtney.) - mattA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You're missing the point of it. The point is to show how evolved ad-sense is. Each one of those ads is terribly appropriate given the contents of the letter.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3LMAO that page is worse than stumbling onto Rotten.com for the first time.
- markp93, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1priceless, esp. the "dog ***** girl"
http://www.rotten.com/library/culture/dog-*****/
- markp93, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1priceless, esp. the "dog ***** girl"
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Pfft. I see no ads. Between adblock and lmhosts, I'm pretty much surfing ad-free. Too bad, this is one time ads would have been interesting. Anybody want to take a screenshot of what they see?
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Conclusion: Adblock is a dangerous threat to society.
- WhyNotTheStars, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I agree with "elShaggy". There just is something really wrong with putting up ads on that page... Perhaps people have been making money off of other people's misery since recorded history and most likely even before that, however, you'd think that they would at least provide a context to that page. A context that would give a little respect for the only reason grunge was ever important and culturally interesting, which was and is Nirvana.
In the age of war profiteering, Haliburton et al, nothing surprises me. - WiskyDrinker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'm a huge fan, but ya.. this is stupid.. And I agree elShaggy .. demeaning.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2My only question is: wtf? How the hell would adsense come up with those results from this text?
shenanigans!- ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thats what adsense is all about...
- jefree, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I just automatically skipped the ads. I didn't even understand the topic combo thing until I examined the page to figure it out and then I was like oh. ads. Ignore the marketing idiots. It's really stupid. We've become a people of ignoring everything so that we can survive with some sort of individuality of mind. I can understand why Kurt would want to commit suicide based on the world we live in.
- nicroma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1No kidding, lol. Out of pure repetition, I started ad blocking the google iframes before I read the page. Then I realized what the page was comparing.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Funny idea, but none of the adwords actually turned out to be that interesting.
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No need to go see a specialist.. only write a letter on how you feel and your symptoms and Google links you to the right medication! wow!
- mpeg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4this is against the google adsense TOS
- 1807, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13Ya know, Kurt Cobain has been my idol since Jr.High and he still is. I know that it was probably just some joke to whomever wrote this but to me, it's kind of a sensitive subject. I really wish whomever posted this wouldn't have just left it alone. Ya know, everyone always asks me, "do you think he was murdered" and I really don't think he was. I think anyone who read his interviews or read his biography would realize the man was depressed a lot. He was brought up in Arberdeen washington by his father who left when he was young and his mother and other family memebers. I think the pressure of being a hug rock star got to him. He once said that he didn't want to be the lead singer. he always wanted to be the drummer, a guy who got to go up on stage but at the end of the day, could still walk the streets and not be hounded by the masses. Kurt killed himself because the pressure of being the "spokesmen for a generation" was to much for him as I am sure it would be fore a lot of us. Also, lest we forget, he was addicted to heroin. The man did heroin like a pro if there is such a thing. He did ammounts of Heroin that most of us would get killed by. There's way more to it than that but I just wanna say evertime I hear someone say "Kurt was murdered" it helps me to seporates the real fans who understood him from the idoiots who just listened to his music "he's the one who likes all our pretty songs and he like's to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun but he knows not what it means when I say..."-Kurt Cobain
- shoover, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11In response to your whole comment:
Huh?
In response to this little gem: "I really wish whomever posted this wouldn't have just left it alone."
Huh? - origclubsoda, on 10/12/2007, -25/+8Why on earth would KC be anybody's idol!? His music was a fad and only a loser offs themself. Pathetic.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2You should really work on your grammar, and spelling.
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1@ mywhitenoise I think your off topic, you get a -digg from me.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Well kurt wasn't that good of a musician. He had to kill himself to maintain popularity.
Like van gogh.

- DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27"Well if Google had been around when Kurt was contemplating suicide, he may still be here."
I suppose that is true, but only if Kurt created a website, wrote the letter, uploaded it to the website, signed up for a Google AdSense account, and viewed his final page first... - tylerdurdenclub, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6Courtney killed Kurt.
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Why don't you back that up smartass?
- xswag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That was cool enough to turn off Adblock for a few seconds. Nice experiment.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yea i had to turn it off as well. At 1st I didnt know what this had to do with google but then I remembered it was being blocked. This letter still makes me sad, even more so knowing now that his daughter is most definatly not better off because her Mother is a crack head.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I had to go to IE and open a new window because of that? How lame.
But, at least I know Adblock is working just fine - ujangdigg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5that's totaly mixed! every paragraph has adsense on it.
I believe Kurt Cobainsense who wrote it :P
*joking. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8kurt cobain. The originator of the emo "post".

- vibhash, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Well I don't knw how this post so many diggs???
Anyways i too love Kurt....but there is adsense all over tht letter :( - paragonmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13SMELLS LIKE TEEN ADSENSE
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4If Curt Saw his letter after posting it on the net and included Adsense, he might have been driven to save Canada's wilderness...thus finding a new purpose in life. " Save Canada's Wilderness Join the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. cpaws.org"
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3You can mod the comment down if you want, but that was one of the ads Adsense randomly added to this page. I found humor in that.
These ads are automatically generated based on the text it finds on the page. They are picked at random. That is what makes this 'experiment' interesting. - fufubag, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1example of why 'digg' should have the 'super-digg', so i could have modded your reply post down by 10.
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3You can mod the comment down if you want, but that was one of the ads Adsense randomly added to this page. I found humor in that.

- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6He's coming, so stick out your tongue
- chazzbro, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1"What Do You Get When You Mix Kurt Cobain's Suicide Letter & Google Adsense?"
Conclusion: You get a violation of the TOS of Adsense. But only because you were stupid enough to title the page that way. - GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5i hate it when people write random crap while theyre on heroine and people call them the best song writer ever
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I bet your one of those types of ignorant assholes who constantly disses drugs without even trying them. His music helps alot of people you know, for you saying that, I hope you goto hell. id agree that herione is horrible though, but your still an *****.
- GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dont tell me I dont try drugs... Id love me an 8th of some dank heady nug right now... but ***** heroin isn't respectable what-so-ever
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is what I don't get. Say he was murdered, and the last 4 lines were penciled in by someone else...why would Kurt write a letter about the break up, why not have someone else take care of it in the media?
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because for instance it's his band? And he's the leader? And people would want to hear it coming from him, not from some MT Editor.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3How can you honestly say some ads from google adsense could have prevented his death?
There is nothing funny about his death and trolling to find his suicide note just to get a digg is deplorable. Rip Jurt Cobain and let him rest in peace. - hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"For her life, which will be so much happier without me."
That's just sad.- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Charles R. Cross writes in Cobain's "Heavier Than Heaven" biography that there was another suicide letter:
""You know, I love you." he wrote in that letter. "I love you Frances, I'm so sorry. Please don't follow me, I'm sorry, sorry, sorry." He had repeatedly lettered "I'm sorry" filling an entire page with this plea. "I'll be there." he continued. "I'll protect you. I don't know where I'm going. I just can't be here anymore"."
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Charles R. Cross writes in Cobain's "Heavier Than Heaven" biography that there was another suicide letter:
- metasin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6do bush's state of the union next
- markp93, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1f-ck.
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3For those saying suicide is selfish, listen to this.
I wouldn't ever kill myself but I don't get mad at people who do it, life is sorta pointless.. its up to you what means something or not. When he pulled that trigger, he no longer existed, meaning his family and friends don't exist anymore(in his mind). So he did what he thought was best, unless that bitch Courtney really did kill him. She looks like the ***** up type who got sick of his crying. I get depressed and *****, and I know most people don't want to hear a constant fountain of pissing and moaning. I just keep it to myself. The only thing I think about when great people die young, is how unlucky I am that I couldn't hear more of their great music. It sucks worse that Layne Staley is dead (lead singer of Alice In Chains), at least we have Jerry Cantrell and the rest of the band left), but there wont be any other singers that sounded as unique as Layne, and that makes me angry. ***** Heroine/Cocaine! - urineboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3you have to admit, it's a very odd note. it doesn't really sound like a suicide note (except the part at the end, with the different handwriting), and it seems like the wrong forum for someone breaking up the band... it reads most like a diary entry-- except that half of it seems addressed to his fans and half of it seems addressed to his wife. Very strange.
- 13thfloor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Adblock and a HOSTS file. I didn't see any ads at all. Turned off adblock and still didn't see any. Oh well.
- oogee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Too many people here are passing harsh judgment on Kurt and folks who resort to suicide in general. The fact is you can't possibly understand the horrible depths of the kind of depression that leads to this end. When you can fully comprehend it, you'll be dead too.
He was sick (possibly exacerbated by the drugs), and victims of suicide are by definition mentally ill. Unfortunately, mental illness cant be "seen" and because of that it can seem partially unreal to those who are not suffering in this way. So calling Kurt Cobain selfish is as useful as telling a schizophrenic to stop hallucinating.
On a separate topic, for those of you who believe that the note was a forgery, it is possible. Most suicide notes are very brief, unlike what is portrayed in fiction. As an exercise in my undergrad studies we were asked to read notes written by cry-for-help suicides and the lethal suicides. Invariably the real, lethal ones were one or two sentences long and did not explain why.
e.g.
Bill, you can have my golf clubs. I'm sorry.
Jim
If this note is real, it is likely that the actual note is the part at the bottom which is alleged to have been written in a different hand. It may have been added on to the end of the letter after time passed and more drugs were consumed. Who really knows. - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I understand why he killed himself now. What an imbecile.
- Zetex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I bet the guy that hosts that just made hundreds (maybe even thousands) of dollars off adsense because of Digg.
- JackHallows, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Kurt Cobain was murdered
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nope,
But Kennedy was assassinated by the goverment.
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nope,
- Hamsterpotpies, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This wasn't funny to read. Kurt would have never like been poked at for peoples entertainment. This is only one more reason he did it.
I'm sorry about this Kurt - PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm jealous for the person with the ads on that page.
- jnbek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0such a shame :(
- powatom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I used to believe that suicide was a selfish thing to do, but I went through a pretty bad time a while back where I was just stressed out and unhappy all the time, and believe me, it really doesn't seem like such a bad idea. It's not like you sit there thinking 'oh god I want to die', it's more like you see a knife lying around and the first thing that pops into your head is just 'do it' or something like that. You don't feel worried or scared by the thought, it's just you see the oppurtunity to die, and your brain starts telling you to take it. It's pretty weird. I never used to tell people about it, and often I'd just be in a normal mood when I'd see a busy road and suddenly you just have this urge to walk out into the traffic. So, you shouldn't really beat up on people who kill themselves, it's not a logical thought (well, it wasn't for me anyway). I don't remember feeling so bad that I wanted to die, or crying or anything, I was just very, very tired of the ***** I was going through. I never planned to kill myself, so I wouldn't have had much to say, which I guess is why real suicide notes tend to be very very short.
On the other hand, this note, suicide note or not, is incredibly ***** whiney. 'I love people too much!'. The logical step to combat this guilt would be to donate a ***** of money to some charity or something, not to quit your source of income. I like Nirvana, and most of Cobain's lyrics, but some of their stuff was ***** stupid. - markyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've not read that before and all I see is the real sadness that seems to have enveloped him at that time. May he rest in peace...
- Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dying is easy- It's living thats hard.
~Soniti - bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What Do You Get When You Mix Kurt Cobain's Suicide Lette, Google Adsense and AdBlock?
