You can read about it at http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2008/06may_carr ... . It really did charge up the telegraph network, even to the point of shocking operators and setting things on fire. Another event like that today would be DISASTEROUS, and that's no crack-pot theory.

But that's more likely to happen at the peak of a solar cycle. We just recently hit the low point and sun spots have only recently started reappearing.
